Why rent a house when you can rent an estate? Drive down the meandering oak lined driveway to your secluded waterfront home in a gated community in the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge overlooking Bulls Bay with a private dock. Despite its proximity to historic Charleston, warm beaches, islands, and unlimited coastal & cultural activities, you will have complete privacy on your 6 acre estate. Spend time relaxing and enjoying the views and abundant wild life near the amenities of Charleston! This is an OWNER operated property.
The home includes 5 bedrooms, 3.5 baths and sleeps 12 adults and up to 3 more children (large window seat/bed that sleeps 2 small children and a crib). The large master bedroom has the feel of a tree house overlooking the water. Other amenities at the home: DSL WiFi, 50” HD plasma TV with DVD & VCR, DVD collection, hammock on screened porch, fully equipped kitchen, gas grill, large indoor and outdoor dining tables, garage, fireplace, enclosed out door shower, extra freezer (for all the fish you catch). The home is named for the 22 foot diameter oak tree in the front yard. From every window you will enjoy a long range view over the water and/or beautiful oaks. Private dock has a swing, rod holders, and a floating dock. There is a historic civil war canon embankment and other era relics on the property. There is a nearby public landing if you want to bring a boat (Boat & Jet ski rentals are also available on nearby Isle of Palms.) Equestrian neighborhood. Volleyball net and other outdoor games are available.
Boat rides are available to Bull Island (undeveloped barrier island in front of our home) so you can play on a private beach or see the sea turtles nesting (seasonal). Was exactly what we were looking for. Went for fishing and relaxation and perfect place for both!
The home was absolutely wonderful. We will definitely book this one again.
Akin to staying in a beautiful Southern mansion
The first view of this house from the moment you turn into the drive way is breathtaking. The inside of the house is just as stunning - from the flooring to the ceiling fans, front porch to the back decks. There was so much character to this place. The dishes and furniture all maintained the quaint Southern/historic aspect of the accommodations. Every time we left on a day trip and returned to the house it was again like taking a step back in time. A relaxing and exciting step. Of course air conditioning, bathrooms, kitchen appliances and laundry facilities were all in keeping with modern amenities. I would recommend bringing drinking water as there is an odor from the tap water. We did use tap water to make coffee and tea and it did not have an affect on either.
We traveled for the eclipse of 2017. Even though the dock had been damaged in a hurricane and had not been replaced yet, we still had a beautiful clearing in which to watch the eclipse. We had a group of 7 women friends and found the house more than adequate for all of us to be together or slip away and find a quiet spot to read a book or just enjoy the scenery. The hammock got a lot of use. Of note, we never ran out of hot water, even with 7 women showering and a load or more of laundry per day. Cell service was a little sketchy (as can be expected) but the WiFi was more than adequate for all of us and our devices. There is also a landline phone. Lots of games for kids to play.
We all agreed we would rather stay here than a brand new condo on the beach. Even though it was a remote location, It was close enough to anything you wanted to do or needed. There is an outpost that had everything you would possibly need, and an excellent restaurant across the street from that. Those were only 5 minutes away. About a 10 minute drive was any number of shops, bars, restaurants, attractions you could hope for. A beautiful beach area was 15 minutes away at Isle of Palms - again full of shops, restaurants, etc.
Despite the remote location, we felt completely safe here. There is a coded gate, and a security system for the house. We felt safe enough that we didn't even lock the doors unless the entire group was gone from the house.
In closing I would like to say that if we ever visit this area again, you will be our first choice. The price to stay, in comparison to what you receive makes that an easy one to make.
This is a home in a wildlife area and not just a rental in a tourist location. This is a beautiful home in a beautiful location, very secluded but close to everything you need. Mount Pleasant is only 15 minutes away and Charleston is an easy 25-30 minute drive. I stayed with a group of 11 friends and the home was clean, spacious and comfortable. Two bedrooms downstairs with 1 and 1/2 bathrooms and three bedrooms upstairs with 2 bathrooms. The appliances were all in working order and the kitchen had everything we needed to cook meals. The owner's description of what to expect was accurate, and he called to make sure we did not have any questions or concerns. This home is a wonderful place to stay when visiting the Charleston area.
Peaceful Family Getaway
We had 8 grandchildren, 4 parents and 2 grandparents and there was room for everyone (it helped when we told the girls that the window bed was the 'Princess Bed'). We fixed most of our meals there, ranging from 'Low Country Boil' to 'Chicken Teriyaki', and the kitchen was quite adequate for our needs. The kids loved to play freeze tag in the huge front yard and ride the tire swing (they named him 'Frisky'). It was hot and muggy outside in the afternoons but the AC kept the house comfortable. We went to Ft. Moultrie, Ft. Sumter, the Yorktown, and the SC Aquarium and they were all less than a half hour drive from the place (the Battery took a little longer). We went to the beach at Isle of Palms County Park: they charged to park, but it was worth it to have access to rest rooms and showers. Walmart and Publix are conveniently located on the way to the house, but we recommend the Boone Hall Farm Store (also right off HWY 17) for fresh shrimp and ice cream cones. The only noise we heard from neighbors was fireworks (on the 4th of July). The location has a good balance of being remote enough to allow for quality time together as a family without being so far out that you would feel isolated or unsafe. I would recommend this rental for anyone looking for a quiet retreat that is still close enough to beaches and 'touristy stuff' to keep everyone busy for at least a week. I would also recommend that you check out the nearby Sewee Restaurant; it looks like an old gas station (which it was) but they serve some of the best fresh seafood in the county.
good experience overall
Our family rented this home for a week (2 kids & 6 adults). It can accommodate 3 kids & 4 couples with plenty of bathrooms. The house is very spacious!
Location-wise take into account what activities you want to enjoy during your stay. It’s located in the backcountry on a wonderful riverfront & surrounded by peace & tranquility. If exploring Charleston is your main focus be aware you may spend a total of 2 hours a day on the road. It’s a fun way to see the various locals, but if that’s not your style then we recommended you stay closer to the city proper.
The house generally was clean although we did have to clean the front door & entryway of spider webs.
Family room, dining room, & kitchen are very open with large windows looking out on beautiful scenery. The furniture was in fairly good shape. Plenty of dishes & silverware for group meals. The pantry had a lot of open items in it possibly from previous renters. Cleaners should remove anything opened. Especially when there is a limit to how many garbage bags are permitted without penalty.
The beds were clean but old & made for a lot of restless sleep for almost everyone. The downstairs ones were so squeaky that any movement on it would wake up your partner. We had a bug issue inside, called for the exterminator & they came 5 days later when we were leaving. We tried to keep our luggage closed but still managed to bring home some critters.
Fairly clean. All the toilets are low in depth - keep in mind if you have hip issues. The shower in one bathroom had a pipe sticking out of the wall, no real showerhead, but when you turn on the water it exploded into a mist that went everywhere.
The picnic table needs maintenance & we were concerned for splinters so we didn’t use it. Deck outside the screened in portion is also rough & splintery. We used the patio table in the screened-in portion & apart from some touchup needed was fine, the chairs solid, & the deck was smooth. The hammock is worse for the wear & needs new netting.
Fixtures are a bit rusted & needs maintenance. Water seems to be a problem for Charleston in general. Make sure you bring plenty of bottled water as you will use it for drinking, ice, & making coffee/tea. Your shower soap will help with the smell when taking a shower. Just be prepared & you will be fine.
I hope this review is helpful. It can be a great experience provided you prepare accordingly & understand the location.
I usually don't respond to reviews, but this one had so many inaccuracies, I felt the need to correct them.
Location: Charleston is a large area and does have traffic. Our estate is located on the side of Charleston where I think most would agree has the most amenities, activities, entertainment and least crime. When people request a quote, I also send them an attachment which list many of the activities in the area. If you happen to have most of your activities planned west of the Ashley, I encourage you to stay somewhere closer to that area. To spend "2 hours a day" on the road means you did no planning.
"Limit to garbage bags": We have weekly trash pickup and five 32 gallon outdoor trash cans. This should hold a minimum of 15 kitchen trash bags. I have never noticed a renter filling all of them up in a week.
Beds: Our home has many antiques, including some of the beds. I donate old mattresses when I notice any problems with them. Some of our mattresses are soft, some firm, and some plush. It's impossible to please everyone.
Shower with "no real showerhead": Completely untrue. The showerheads are small high-flow showerheads which most people prefer over the newer regulated low-flow showerheads.
Hammock: replacing soon
Water: We are on a well and have a whole house water filtration system which I have serviced whenever I notice or someone reports a problem with the taste.
Bugs: I called to check on the renters a few days after they arrived. The gentleman that answered said they had seen ‘5 bugs’ and it was ‘not a problem’ and declined when I offered to have the exterminator come. The exterminator came a few days later for the regular quarterly service. This is a waterfront home in a hot humid southern climate surrounded by oak trees. Bugs do occasionally get inside, but I usually find them dead from the extermination treatments. I don't try to kill the outdoor bugs because it would be futile, bad for the food chain, and the volume of chemicals required would be bad for the environment. At our home we have seen foxes, deer, turkeys, owls, eagles, raccoons, squirrels, and on one occasion, a cougar. Not to mention the dolphins, crabs, and everything else the water brings. You can actually see fiddler crabs climbing the trees. Most of our renters stay there to be near the beauty and space of the outdoors while being close to the benefits of the city. If you don't appreciate living in a wildlife refuge, you will be happier in a hotel in the city.
We all had beautiful stay! Lots of room in Waterfront
Estate! Love Charleston and we will back to visit in the future ,
