Awendaw Estate Rental Photos and Description

Why rent a house when you can rent an estate? Drive down the meandering oak lined driveway to your secluded waterfront home in a gated community in the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge overlooking Bulls Bay. Despite its proximity to historic Charleston, warm beaches, islands, and unlimited coastal & cultural activities, you will not be able to see another house from your 6 acre estate. Spend time relaxing and enjoying the views and abundant wild life near the amenities of Charleston!

This is an OWNER operated property. We do not rent to anyone we have not spoken with directly. So please call or email before online booking so we can answer your questions and to ensure that our home is a good fit for you.

The home includes 5 bedrooms, 3.5 baths and sleeps 12 adults and up to 3 more children (large window seat/bed that sleeps 2 small children and a crib). The large master bedroom has the feel of a tree house overlooking the water. Other amenities at the home: 50” HD plasma TV with DVD & VCR, DVD collection, hammock on screened porch, fully equipped kitchen, gas grill, large indoor and outdoor dining tables, garage, fireplace, enclosed out door shower, crab traps, extra freezer (for all the fish you catch). Nearby pier with deep water dock. Child swing hanging from an oak tree.

The home is named for the 22 foot diameter oak tree in the front yard. From every window you will enjoy a long range view over the water and/or beautiful oaks. There is a historic civil war canon embankment and other era relics on the property. There is a nearby public landing if you want to bring a boat (Boat & Jet ski rentals are also available on nearby Isle of Palms.) Equestrian neighborhood. Volleyball net and other outdoor games are available.

Boat rides are available to Bull Island (undeveloped barrier island in front of our home) so you can play on a private beach or see the sea turtles nesting (seasonal). Dolphins are plentiful in the waterway. National Bird of Prey center is nearby. Downtown Charleston approx 35min, Isle of Palms approx 22min, Mt Pleasant approx 18min. In order to meet the high standards of our guests, we do not allow smoking or pets. Sorry, we do not allow weddings or other parties on the estate.

Hurricane protection: Unlike most rentals, we put in our contract that we will refund all of your money if you have to cancel due to a hurricane.

Beautiful Property-Large wonderful Home-Happy renters from Ohio and Louisiana

  • 5 of 5

9 siblings and spouses spent 5 days at this large 2 story home in Awendaw on the water. Unfortunately, hurricane Mathew wiped out the dock where usually you could sit over the water and watch the wildlife, but this did not dampen our enjoyment. The ambiance of the property is lovely and the screened in deck makes coffee and conversation very enjoyable. While it is about 35-40 minutes from the Charleston visitor center where we parked everyday when we drove in to town to take in the sights, it was not really a problem and was a straight shot in and out.

A few things to note about the house and area: The kitchen is stocked with every pot, pan and things needed for big meal cooking, but be sure to bring your own paper products like paper towels, napkins, extra toilet paper, etc;

Yes, the water smells a bit like sulfur but tastes just fine --although we did buy gallon water jugs to use for our coffee at the owner's suggestion; we also bought bagged ice in case;

There are big grocery stores on the way in on Hwy 17 but probably 12 miles or 15 minutes away, but it's easy to get ice cream back to the house for a snack and get things forgotten.

It is DARK if you get there at night so be sure and bring a flashlight or have an app on your phone you can use.

Be sure and bring bug spray--being on the water means sand fleas ("no-see-ems") and mosquitoes when outside. But perhaps this is not a problem year round but due to post hurricane moisture.

Bring binoculars--we saw lots of birds, and even a fox or coyote--not sure which.

Internet and cable TV is included but the cell reception was pretty spotty right at the house--had to be on the front porch or in the back bedroom to get service. But there is a landline house phone.

The owner is very responsive to any question or need we had and contacted me right away after the hurricane went through to let me know everything was fine except the dock. He even offers a refund in case of a hurricane--Young friends of mine lost $2400 for a weekend home rental in Charleston due to the hurricane and mandatory evacuation--OUCH.

Highly enjoyable & serene stay at Awendaw estate

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect for my fishing crew of four gents ( could easily handle several more). It was clean, functional, and quiet with variety of activities to enjoy. Keeping my boat at the dock was a big plus and our guides were happy to pick us up at the house's dock each morning. We spent much of our free time hanging out on the dock as well. The screened in porch was a great communal space at night with a clean grill on the deck nearby. Wifi worked and even though we were in a relatively remote location, cell phone service worked in parts of the house, especially out on the dock. The kitchen was functional and bathrooms clean and plenty. Only a short ride to SeeWee Restuarant and the Outpost Store and Gas Station. Owner was responsive to a few minor issues. Driving into town or the barrier islands was easy. Later in the week, my wife and I kayaked around the creeks and ran the boat out to Bulls Bay to enjoy this unique location. My local relatives came out to visit often and they enjoyed the time at the house and on the dock. I hope to stay here again in the future and bring the grown kids to this peaceful and beautiful location.

Great stay for our family of 10

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful property with lots of space for our family of 10. Easy access to dock. Lots of parking space available. Great neighborhood for walks or golf cart rides (we brought our own). Secluded, yet close enough to Mt Pleasant to get anything you would need. Highly recommended home!

Perfect house for the family to gather and spend time together.

  • 5 of 5

The property owner was extremely helpful with all the information he provided about the area and how to get to things.

The house is rustic and charming. The screened in porch was a great touch. We used it a bunch. We had a 3 1/2 year old and a 1 1/2 year old with us. We never felt we had to hover over the children because of potential safety hazards in the home. Very kid friendly and comfortable. The restaurants in the area were great and everyone was so friendly everywhere. Market, stores etc. We did not make the Birds of Prey compound but it looked wonderful. The Aquarium in Charleston is worth the drive. We all loved it, Grandparents, kids and grand kids. Glad we did not stay in Charleston itself, too crowded with the tourist season in full swing. It was nice to retreat back to our quiet home away from home.

Nice, secluded home ready for a family get-together!

  • 4 of 5

We loved the house and really enjoyed our stay there. We had a few hiccups, but the owner did his best to try to rectify them even though he was on his OWN vacation at the time! Thank you!

Wonderful home for peaceful family retreat

  • 5 of 5

The listing description for this property was accurate and detailed, with everything clearly laid out in writing and in the online description. The property was very clean and well-maintained with a home-like welcoming feel that immediately put everyone at ease. The owner quickly responded to any concerns, and was very easy to work with. We loved the fact that everyone had both adequate family gathering space in the kitchen, den and screened in porch with private spaces to relax as needed. We enjoyed going out to the dock to view the dolphins, deer and other wildlife and do some fishing. We were only 20 minutes or so from Isle of Palms Beach, and 30 minutes or so from Downtown Charleston. Both were easily reached by Hwy 17 with many amenities and historic sites close by. There was a Dollar General and the SeeWee Outpost store close by if we needed any last minute supplies or gas, and the SeeWee Restaurant had delicious fresh local seafood. Our families would definitely stay here again in the future if the opportunity to visit Charleston arises.
