Orne House Rental Photos and Description

7 Bedrooms (6 En-suite Bathrooms + 2 additional) Normandy Self Catering Rental

L'Orangerie was built in 1703, originally part of the local historically important chateau and 8th Century Priory. It is a stunning base from which to experience the best that Normandy and the Suisse Normande has to offer.

The house is over 350sq metres of living space. The huge 80sq metre+ sitting room, and separate sitting room make it possible for everyone to sit together, or apart and have personal space. The dining room has ample space for everyone to eat together in the same room. The 7 large bedrooms and 7 bathrooms (6 en-suite) give you the privacy of a hotel room, with the advantage of your own house and gardens.

The formal garden is always colourful, with a large adjacent garden for ball games.

Visit William The Conquerer's birthplace and the Bayeux Tapestry; Operation Overlord and the D-Day Normandy Landing Beaches & museums. Take one of the many local walks, or relax and make the most of the extremely well equipped house, its gardens and enjoy a leisurely evening meal at L'Orangerie or a local restaurant

ACCOMMODATION - You have exclusive use of our impressive (historically important) large, quality furnished, house and gardens. Downstairs the ceiling height is 5 metres, and upstairs, the spacious bedrooms and corridor have been designed to show the original beams, dating back to 1703. Six of the seven bedrooms have been equpped with en-suite facilities : 5 upstairs and 2 ground floor bedrooms. The seventh bedroom (with 3 single beds) has its own dedicated separate bathroom.

We have tried to provide everything you could possibly need during your stay. There is ample crockery, cutlery and glassware, plus plenty of big cooking pans, and serving dishes - we understand what is needed for a large group. We have two large fridge/freezers - so plenty of room for all your food and drinks.

MEALS - We can organise extremely reasonably priced fully catered (and cleared) 4 course evening meals - all with a local flavour, You can sit back, relax, and enjoy the evening with friends and family.

Why choose us and L'Orangerie for your holiday? We go out of our way to make your holiday memorable for all the right reasons. We have many guests who have made repeat bookings, and recommended us to friends and family. Our very positive feedback is highly gratifying, and guests always tell us that the pictures do not fully convey the size and the impressiveness of the house and location (I keep trying).

We have a background of working at senior levels in large multi-national organisations, including working in France, Belgium and The Netherlands. We are widely travelled, and we understand the importance of delivering a top quality product and service, for a good value price. We always seek to exceed your expectations in all we do, because we want you to leave happy that you chose us and L'Orangerie for your holiday (we know it is a big decision).

We are in our early 50s, and we live in an adjacent 3 bedroom cottage - if you need anything we are available at any time, but we also understand you will want privacy to enjoy the property and its pretty gardens.

LOCAL ATTRACTIONS : Of major significance to this area are the close ties with William the Conquerer, plus the D-Day Normandy Landings during WW2.

There are a number of tourist routes to follow - the DD Landings routes; the cheese routes; the cidre routes; the granite routes. All of these pick up themes pertinent to the history and traditions in this area. Visit important Chateaux, Cathedrals and Historic Ports.

Closeby is the Roches d'Oetre - a geological site that has been developed to include a tourist centre and starting point for many fabulous walking and cycling routes (we are close to the GR 36); mountain biking; horse riding, fishing and kayaking. The region was declared a 'site-naturel' by the French Government in 2011. This exclusive status recognises that the surrounding countryside contains an important and rare mix of wildlife and plantlife, which is now protected by law from any development that may threaten its character.

We have a mixture of great local restaurants and bistros. Local markets are definitely worth a visit. After more than 25 years in the area, we still find something new to do and explore all the time. The house has a wealth of tourist information and brochures about the various activities available in the region, and we are always happy to work with you before or during your stay, to help you maximise your time in Normandy.

Further afield is Paris and Disneyland, Honfleur, Versailles, Monet's Gardens at Giverney, the Mont St. Michel and the Loire Valley.

About Jeanette & Andrew Heydn

Andrew and I are in our mid 50s. We both had hectic and successful City careers, working in an international business environment, but decided that after 30 years we would abandon all the commuting and meetings, to develop our property in the Suisse Normande, and do something completely different. Many of our guest comment that we really are living the dream.

We have a passion for doing things very well, and truly are happy to read the wonderful guest feedback, telling us that we are getting it right. We strive to continue to improve what we do, always seeking and listening to guest feedback. Our biggest gratification is when guests return themselves, and when they recommend us to family and friends.

It sounds like a cliché, but a large group in 2012, celebrating a 50th birthday with friends here, said that they were surprised and relieved that we delivered on all the things we said we would prior to their arrival. It seemed obvious to us, but apparently for some, it has not always been their experience. We believe that guests put a lot of trust in us delivering on all the things we promise, and we really do strive to do everything we say, and more wherever possible. Providing the background for a special family celebration, or a large group holiday is a big responsibility, which we fully recognise.

Jeanette & Andrew Heydn purchased this house in 2004

Why Jeanette & Andrew Heydn chose Orne

We chose La Forêt Auvray as we know the region and what it has to offer very well. We have had another house locally - just 5 kilometres away for more than 20 years. When we decided to purchase something larger, we looked all over France, but came back to the Suisse Normande.

We know there is plenty to do - something for everyone, of all ages and tastes. We ourselves still discover new things all the time. Normandy is a truly diverse region.

Some visitors say it is like stepping back in time - there is a more relaxed pace of life for sure, and the completely unspoilt surroundings allow wildlife to flourish. In 2010 this region (The Suisse Normande) was declared to be a 'Site Naturel' by the French Government - effectively recognising and preserving its character, wildlife and wonderful hedgerows, rolling fields and forests.

Closeby, we have a wealth of pretty small villages to visit - sitting by the river Orne at Pont d'Ouilly on a Sunday afternoon in the summer, listening to the music from the local 'Tea-Dance' known as a Guingette, is a simple but delightful pleasure.

Slightly further away (about 14 kilometres) is the lovely town of Falaise - birthplace of William The Conquerer. The chateau has been fully restored, and is a greatly impressive historic visit.

All around you will see monuments to those who lost their lives in WW2, particularly during the D-Day Landings. All nationalities are remembered with great respect.

What makes this house unique

The Orangerie firstly appealed to us firstly because it is situated in a fabulous position, with truly magnificent views. Sometimes we almost have to pinch ourselves to realise that we really do wake up here of a morning. It is such a pleasure for us.

Secondly it is a building that is hugely spacious and private. We looked at many large letting complexes, but this was the only one we saw that was big enough to have a large group all sit together INSIDE for meals and evening chats. This is not usually the case for smaller groups of properties. Even the best of friends and family may become tense if squashed together for long enough, so our large bedrooms, private bathrooms, and a total of 100sq metres of lounge area are really different from other properties.

Atmosphere is also important. As we spent time in the property, we quickly understood that it has a really good, welcoming feel about the building - I call it 'happy bricks' but Andrew says that I am a bit whacky like that.

Owning an historic property is a responsibility and a great joy. Planning permission from the Historic Monuments Board to undertake the conversion work was a challenge, but well worth it. Upstairs in the West bedroom, you can see gothic carvings in the window sills - from where they built the property using bits of the old 8th century priory next door. The exposed roof beams tell the story of the building's new roof design, added over 150 years ago when the house was a Nunnery.

What we love the most is the wildlife - watching the birds in the garden is fantastic - at ground level there are the blue tits, yellow tits, great tits, nuthatches, woodpeckers etc. Look up in the sky and you will always see a kestrel, red kite, or buzzard making the most of the thermals from the hillside. The red squirrels and pine martens have quickly discovered the peanut supply, and the night chorus from the owls is what I miss the most when we are elsewhere.

L'Orangerie did not disappoint us in any way at all!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I, together with our friends (three other couples), spent a great week at l'Orangerie in June 2016. We have been making a similar trip to Normandy for several of the past 10 years, staying in hotels or most recently hiring a large house and catering for ourselves. We all agreed that i'Orangerie was the best house we had ever rented, not just because it was the biggest ( although having a choice of en-suite bedrooms was a bonus), but we found that everything promised in the property description was there. Plus some unexpected little extras which made us feel very welcome.

All the rooms in the house are very spacious, especially the huge lounge with a wood burning stove, which we made good use of on the couple of wet days that we had. The owners, Andrew and Jeanette, are very welcoming and took care to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. It happened to be my 70th birthday while we were there and the owners arranged and served an excellent celebratory dinner for us which definitely made my birthday one to remember!

Owner's Response: We cannot say how pleased we are with this review. These lovely guests had the wettest week in June in our memory of 25 years in Normandy (it was the same in England) and we are so happy that the house, gardens, and our birthday meal made their holiday a thoroughly enjoyable one. One of the ladies commented to us that it was the first time that the property had lived up to the pictures and the description, and it is reassuring for us and our guests to read this. Again, one of the advantages of L'Orangerie is the internal space for everyone to be together, and I recall a few bbqs under cover in the gardens. After 10 years of letting, we strive hard and invest each year to maintain our high standards of proving excellent facilities and a high standard of cleanliness - it is gratifying to have it reflected in this and our other reviews. We are really do appreciate the time these kind guests have spent to write this glowing review, and we very much hope we will be on their short-list for future celebration holidays together. Best wishes and many thanks from Jeanette & Andrew. X

Fantastic holiday!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I (a group of nine adults, three children and a toddler) have just returned from a really super holiday in L'Orangerie. Andrew and Jeanette could not have been more welcoming, and the house and gardens are superb. The meal Jeanette cooked was delicious and a wonderful way to start the holiday and Andrew put on a treasure hunt around the garden for the children, who absolutely loved it! The house was very comfortable, clean and spacious, and the kitchen was incredibly well equipped (it really had EVERYTHING), and very child-friendly (two cots and stair gates!). The garden had plenty of bikes for everyone, as well as games and toys, and a playroom for the children! The area was beautiful with plenty to do (although you could easily entertain yourselves in the house and gardens), and there is a large supermarket a short drive away. We had a fantastic lunch in a nearby restaurant, L'Auberge Auvraysienne (it was so good we wished we'd gone more!) In conclusion, the house and the hosts were faultless and we are already planning a return trip next year!

Owner's Response: It is so gratifying to receive such a glowing review from our first guests of 2016. We loved meeting them all, and are so very pleased they had a fantastic holiday. We work hard to maintain our high standards and it is so good to read that it has been appreciated and that our guests find all they need in the house and gardens. We very much look forward to welcoming this lovely family back to l'Orangerie in 2017. We would like to thank them for taking the time to write this review - we are really very grateful, and we count ourselves lucky that we have such great guests staying at L'Orangerie.

Superb secluded large property

  • 5 of 5

Very spacious and well equipped property with lovely garden and good facilities. Ideal for our group of 12 60+ adults. Remote and very quiet. Friendly welcome from owners who were very helpful. Lovely area with lots to do if countryside/nature are your thing. Excellent weather helped!

Owner's Response: We are so pleased to read that this group of guests had such a good time at L'Orangerie, and we thank them for taking the time to share their experience of the house and the Suisse Normande. We are indeed very lucky to be in such a stunning location (particularly now as the autumnal colours arrive), and these guests certainly were extremely lucky with the weather - often good in early Autumn, it was positively sunny and warm - even late into the evenings, so they really could enjoy full days and nights. Many thanks again - we were very happy you chose L'Orangerie.

Perfect stay for a large family group

  • 5 of 5

Our large family group (including 9 children) had a really great stay at l'Orangerie. The house was ideal for us with lots of space and masses of beds and bedrooms allowing all the kids to sleep in their preferred groups.

The garden is very pretty but also large and enclosed making it super for toddlers, and the football pitch was much used by the bigger kids.

There is lots to do locally and we'd especially recommend the Go Ape style parcourt site just five minutes up the road and also a cafe and boating on the river at Clecy. There's also a really good market at Pierre sur Dives.

Finally the kids loved the brilliant treasure hunt laid on by Andrew and Jeanette, the owners.

lovely, lovely!

  • 5 of 5

What a special place! We were 14 people, including seven kids ages 8-16. The house was spacious and comfortable, with plenty of room for both privacy and communal activities. The dining and kitchen areas were large enough to seat us all, though we ended up eating most meals in the garden. The house is in a very lovely and tranquil location at the end of a small valley. There are many activities available within a 30 minute drive, and the Normandy beaches are only ~1 hour by car. Our kids especially enjoyed a nearby tree ropes course and kayaking down the Orne River. The house is also well stocked with videos, books and board games. Owners Andrew and Jeanette were extremely friendly and helpful, with tips about where to eat, hike, get the best croissants, etc. Honestly, the only negative was that the week went by too fast. We'd love to return again.

Owner's Response: How gratfiying it is to read this review. It truly was a delight to meet this family, who were coming together from the USA and Ireland for a family holiday and reunion. The seven children were lovely and really interested in the history of the house and the chateau next door - they could not believe the exterior walls of the old priory were more than 1300 years old! We were very pleased when they told us that the high point of their holidays was the complimentary treasure hunt Andrew had organised for them - although I suspect the surprise visit to Disneyland Paris en-route home proved to be even more popular. We would love to welcome them back, and we know they will still find plenty of new things to do. We thank them for this great review and for being such great guests.

beautiful well equipped house for a family stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here as a large family group of 10 in May 2015. The house has a huge living room with a large open fire as the centre piece. We were all able to sit down comfortably together in the lounge and spread around when we wanted more space. Similarly the kitchen, breakfast area and dining room could accommodate us all together which is essential for a large group.

Andrew and Jeanette were perfect hosts and provided a fantastic BBQ on one evening - the garden is beautiful with views across to the Chateau and surrounding countryside. As keen walkers we were delighted to be provided with maps and information to take with us on our walks.

There is a great restaurant nearby and numerous activities - Andrew patiently tried to teach us Archery and took us kayaking.

The house was clean comfortable and I would thoroughly recommend it particularly to a large group that needs space to be both together and apart.

Owner's Response: How gratifying it is to read another great review. It was a delight for us to join this wonderful family for a little archery, and Andrew has long since been saying he really must try the kayaking on the Orne, as so many of our previous guests have given us such glowing reports. We were so pleased to be able to share some of our local knowledge with this group - we even managed to provide a very acceptable vegan bbq dish for the non-animal product eating member fo the group (I learnt a lot about additives). We are hopeful that we will be able to welcome this family again to L'Orangerie, and maybe next time, the members who did not join them in 2015, will be able to come too. We thank Pip for taking the time to write this kind review.

Car: necessary

We are in the SUISSE NORMANDE - famous for its pretty woods, rolling verdant landscapes, mature trees and varied abundant wildlife. Badgers; red-kites; kestrels; buzzards; pine martens; red squirrels; owls all visit our gardens.

Many pretty walks are possible from our property - if you don't want to see a car for hours, we can point you in the right direction, behind the chateau along the riverside, and then wind your way gently up the forest behind us, coming back via another pretty forest path. As an alternative, you could go up to La Foret Auvray, via 'Spooky Alley' - a tree lined old road, that is not only open to vehicles in one direction (there is now a new road that meanders up to the village).

For spectacular views, an informative visitor centre, more stunning walking routes, and also a 'Go Ape' high wire activity centre in the pine trees, the Roches d'Oetre is less than 2 kilometres away (go by complimentary bike from L'Orangerie).

Visit nearby Falaise Castle, birthplace of William The Conquerer; Bayeux and the tapestry and all the World War 2 D-Day Normandy Landing Beaches and museums. Stroll along Gold, Omaha, Sword, Juno and Utah beaches, Point du Hoc, Sainte-Mere-Eglise, Pegasus Bridge, Monet's Gardens, Le Mont St. Michel. There are so many visitor destinations and historic trails to follow all around this area. Paris is easily accessible for the day - even Disneyland.

Alternatively we intersect the Grand Randonnee GR 36 famous rambers footpath. Follow our detailed walking maps - have a guided walk with Andrew - take out one of our many bikes.

Other Activities: Canoeing; Velo-Rail; rock-climbing; Spa treatments

Golf: There are a number of Golf courses in the region. In particular, our guests like to play at the course at Clecy, which is about 15 kilometres away from L'Orangerie, but is hilly. Bagnoles de l'Orne and Flers are also reasonably local. Caen Sequeville is 30 kilometres (but a fast direct route, so accessible in 30 minutes).

The thing our guests comment is that they really value the privacy of having so many en-suite facilities - giving them the feel of having a private hotel room, in a gite, which is not easy to find. There is a potty and a plastic baby bath available in the children's bathroom. Shower and hand towels are included in the price.

Spacious en-suites, except for the triple single bedroom, which is set up targeting younger children, although they are a standard adult sized single bed - this room has a large separate dedicated bathroom (we were told children and water alone at night sometimes is not wise). Each room has a radiator - either electric or oil, depending on upstairs or downstairs. All bedding is immaculate, mattresses and pillows are protected. We supply all the top quality Dorma linen for the beds. Each of the very large rooms has bedside cabinets and reading lights, wardrobes, chest of drawers and a mirror. Some have ottomans. We have a double sofa bed in the main sitting room downstairs. The cot is upstairs on the landing and is easily located to any room (they are all plenty big enough to take a cot - or indeed several if you bring travel cots with you as a large group with several babies)

Notes:
Large groups need a lot of space. All rooms at L'Orangery are big and airy, with comfortable seating for all. The kitchen has everything you need for a large group - big pots and pans, plenty of cooking space, with two large fridge/freezers. We have 2 high chairs, plates and cups for very young children, and for all, a good selection of games and toys for indoors and out. Our guests' children love to play on the complimentary bikes, or in the CLUBHOUSE - a small building at the end of the garden, parents know their children are safe in the enclosed garden - their own special place. Our adjacent field is perfect for ball games. We have 2 large BBQs and ample garden seating. We have a large library of books and some DVDs for all ages. Electric; water; gas;towels and wood for the log burner are included in the price - no nasty additional bill shocks at the end of your stay. The oil heating is run as necessary between October and April (£25 per day charge outside this period).
