Both Michael and I are native San Franciscans.
There were originally two houses built in the West Portal area in the early 1900s, ours still proudly stands, the other was destroyed. This house has survived numerous earthquakes.
We loved our stay on this cute street. The garden is absolutely amazing and we actually enjoyed the rain ! It never rains where we are at. Though our trip was cut short for work, we really enjoyed our time staying here. The location is very good within walking distance to transit, restaurants. We definitely will recommend your place to our family and friends and would stay here again. Thank you,
The house was in a very convenient location with good restaurants , drug store, public transportation close by within walking distance. It was nice not to get back in a car after doing touristy things all day in the city and dealing with San Francisco traffic. We were surprised to find a UPS store nearby as well, which we utilized to ship some things home. The suite was clean and comfortable. We were concerned about parking, but that worked out as well and we never parked more than a block away.
I'll start by saying that the rental was nice, clean and in a good location. The rental was further from the wharf than I thought but being close to Golden Gate Park and nice dinning options made up for it.
The rental is small and cozy but the lack of a fully appointed kitchen disappointed me. The only sink to use was the bathroom sink as there isn't a kitchen sink. Also of note is the lack of any sort of dinning table or somewhere to eat a meal if you'd like to get take-out and dine in.
As the title of this review states, it felt as if my wife and I moved back in with my parents. I have used VRBO to book many rentals and this is my first negative experience.
The owner states that they provide a "continental breakfast every morning" in the instruction binder. Since we did not see this perk in the initial description of the property, we were pleasantly surprised... Until we realized that the breakfast seemed like a veiled excuse to check in on property while the guests are away.
We were told that we must turn off all lights when we leave the rental. I'm all about conservation but when staying in an unfamiliar house, its nice to have a light on when you get back from a long day and be able to see where you are stepping. When we got back from a day of shopping, the one light I left on was turned off and ended up fumbling around trying to find a light switch. While leaving the lone pastry for my wife and I to satisfy the so-called breakfast, the owner turned off the light I intentionally left on.
That same night, the rental was warm so I looked through the binder to see if there were instructions for the thermostat. I didn't see any thermostat on the walls so went to open the only window in the rental but there was no screen. I emailed the owner to ask if there was air conditioning and was given a condenscending reply of "this SF, we have natural air conditioning, it's called fog." Nice. This was not my first time to SF and am very aware of the weather but the window had no screen and didn't want insects coming in.
Also, since the rental is ground floor, my wife didn't feel safe with an open window and no patio light being on, so we left the patio light on overnight. The next morning, we were greeted with an email stating that the light bothers the neighbors and not to leave it on.
As I mentioned before, I have rented many properties and this is the first time the owner has come in daily.
Would not recommend.
The owner of this property canceled our reservation less than a week before we were supposed to check in. Family crisis was what we were told. We truly hope that everything worked out okay for her, but this REALLY left us in the lurch! We ended up staying in an over-priced, flea-bag DIVE hotel in a VERY scary part of the Tenderloin. With less than a week before check-in, there weren't any reasonably priced VRBO properties available with such short notice, and for some reason, most of the mid-priced hotels were booked solid.
We made the best of it, and kept busy the whole time. It was just very scary getting to that hotel late at night.
To top this all off, VRBO kept their portion of the fee for this booking!
After I called VRBO, and explained this situation to them, apparently they WILL refund the fees that they had kept. I feel that if a reservation is not kept, and it is not the fault of the customer, these fees should be automatically reversed.
Located 10-15 minute by underground streetcar Muni ride to downtown and waterfront this charming abode was a haven of respite from the big city (And I live In Toronto:)The beautiful garden with patio furniture provided a layer of peaceful space ,fresh cool air and chirping birds while travelling with my adult daughter. The West Portal area itself was great for hill walking and home gazing , ethnic restaurants and a middle eastern marketeria and Safeway store 7 blocks away. The bedroom was cozy with very comfy bed, nice kitchenette and amazing large tiled bathroom with jacuzzi and shower. The hosts provided a wonderful looking entertainment centre (did not use) and many brochures, maps, menus, books of the West Portal area and San Fran.Continental breakfast and Keurig coffee maker/pods were provided daily as was washing up of dishes.Blinds and shutters provided ample light block and everything was aesthetically pleasing .There was no need for a/c as temps dipped to the 50's in the evening and the fog rolled in.Private entry with keypad and tall wooden gate provided security .I would definitely recommend this VRBO!
We loved the small apartment, West Portal Cozy Garden Suite. It is absolutely amazing that West Portal is only a short block away. Couldn't ask for better location. Good restaurants within walking distance, and the garden was quietly isolated and lovely for an evening glass of wine. You do need to remember, however, that the kitchen is tiny, with only a microwave and small refrigerator. Linda does provide a tasty light breakfast. Enjoyed our stay and loved San Francisco.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Clean, quiet, well appointed, attentive owner. GREAT LOCATION!! Would definitely stay again.
Our house is in the upscale residential neighborhood of West Portal nestled between two prominent areas of St. Francis Wood and Forest Hill. It has the highest rate of private cars and lowest rate of crime in S.F. The area has been recognized as one of the safest in San Francisco by the SFPD. The district is named for the western portal of the Twin Peaks Tunnel which opened for business 96 years ago.
