Spacious,, Clean, and Well Located

  • 4 of 5

The benefits of this sprawling apartment in a quiet neighborhood within walking distance to the train station far outweigh its demerits. We never met the owners of the apartment, which bills itself as a B & B on the door, but they had arranged for a driver to pick us up at the Airport, and we didn't feel at all rebuffed by their absence. We were greeted by the housekeeper Rosaria, who was effusively hospitable, opinionated, and forthcoming with superlatives. She doesn't speak any English, which added to her charm. (My husband speaks Italian and I have a few words and phrases left from a summer in Florence 45 years ago). The 4 bedroom, 4 bath apartment is minimally furnished, and happily free of tschockes and tacky icons of the Eternal City, though maps and guidebooks were left at our disposal. We had rented the apartment for a reunion of family and friends, several of whom failed to make it, so we did not make full use of the ample space. Now here are the demerits: the kitchen was woefully under-equipped for a place that is clearly meant to accommodate large groups. There was no oven (except for the microwave, which was useful), no dishwasher and no coffee maker. The last was especially problematic, since two tiny espresso makers (the pre-digital, stove- top models) didn't cut it for our modest party of four. There was also no washing machine, though Rosaria did point me to the Italian equivalent of Woolite and a cache of clothes-pins. The balcony, which overlooks the grounds of the British Embassy, is decorative rather than serviceable, and we were disappointed not to be able to sit on it for our morning thimbleful of espresso. The apartment is also heavily draped and shaded, but given the oppressive heat of Rome even in mid-October, indoor darkness was more an asset than a liability. So, all-in-all Medici House, with a few modest additions, is an ideal no-frills meet-up site for famiies or friends who plan to take in the city and dine out. The restaurants around are fabulous and plentiful.

Damp, dated and uncomfortable stay

  • 1 of 5

We were 10 people staying here. The good points are its location, so close to everything. Bad points. Very dated apartment, dirty walls, mouldy bathrooms, old bedding. Not enough towels for 10 people. Not hot water in three of the showers. Two showers flooded the bathrooms each time they were used. Towel rail didn't work so the towels we did have stayed damp each day. No spare bed sheets even though there were four toddlers in the party. Two of the three door keys didn't work, and one broke off in the door. Ensuite bathroom was damp and had huge insects called silver fish all over the floor at night, was very disturbing. Iron was locked away so had to get hold of owner and request the housekeeper come and unlock it. 10 coat hangers for 10 people, and no wardrobe space as each wardrobe was packed with pillows, curtains and duvets. One bathroom the lights went out on the second day and never came back on, so parents had to have their cold showers in the dark. Most bedrooms had only one bulb in the light fitting, so rooms were very dark. One tiny, old sofa in the lounge. No useful utensils in the kitchen, no grill or toaster. On day of check out, housekeeper showed up and hour and half early, let herself in and started tidying up around us. She removed all the towels, and some people hadn't used the bathroom yet. Went through our food in the kitchen, moved our suitcases out into the hall and kept tutting and saying stuff to herself in Italian. It was a horrible end to our holiday. I would not recommend anyone to this apartment unless you only need a bed, no shower, light or comfort. It's a shame as it was our first family holiday and a family wedding in Rome, and it was all marred by this apartment. At least there was nothing the kids could do to the apartment to make it worse. I did contact the owner to try and resolve the issues, but got no response.

Quick visit to Rome

  • 3 of 5

We booked this apartment for two nights mainly because it had enough beds and bathrooms to make it comfortable for eight adults. Apartment was nice enough to get us by for two nights. Only complaints were air conditioning would not turn on in one of the bedrooms and couldn't be serviced due to me notifying owner late Saturday evening and technician not being available on Sunday and bed was not very comfortable. Sofa would be nice in living room but we survived with out it. Newer furnishings would make the apartment more desirable, but like I stated it was ok for two nights. And owner was very good at returning communications. Close to restaurants and a grocery store and bars. Caterina was kind enough to allow us to drop our bags off early when we arrive in Rome so we could continue on with our tour guide, which we greatly appreciated!

Perfect for our family of 10

  • 5 of 5

Location was excellent and a 5 minute taxi ride or 15 minute walk from termini station. My nephew was injured before our trip and had to be in a wheelchair/ use crutches so the small elevator was very helpful. Highly recommend for big groups.

Overall a nice stay

  • 4 of 5

We were 6 adults and 6 kids stayed in the apartment for 4 nights. We all had a nice stay except for few issues.

On the good side - it is very close to the city centre, plenty of local restaurants and shops to explore. Walkable distance to the Roma Termini, so had easy access to our hop on hop off and local travel.

The rooms were clean.

It had a well equipped kitchen, nice spacious bed rooms. 4 bathrooms made easy to start our trip with out any delays.

Very friendly owner who helped to arrange the airport pick and drop. Always responded in time for pre and post booking queries via email.

On the negative side - the runner carpet in the hall was sticky - it is in a desperate need of a clean / change over.

The locks in the bathrooms are a bit dodgy, it had to be locked with a key. My poor wife got locked in the bathroom for about 30 mins on our first day. Luckily she managed to get out after a bit of struggle just before we started looking for help. One of my mates struggled for about 5 mins to open the bathroom door on our last day!!

The lighter kept for gas hob was basically a cigarette lighter, found a bit difficult to use it as nearly burnt the fingers couple of times. It could be easily sorted!

We were very reluctant to use the kettle in the kitchen as it is full of limescale.

We were received by the house keeper who cannot speak english, so could not get enough information about the apartment and locality which we were expecting to get. However we were informed by the owner about this previously that she will be out of town. Though the owner was on the other end of the phone whenever we needed!!
