About Neil Van Hoogen

We came to the Highlands area in 1996 from Palm Beach County Florida after retiring (Show & Sell publications). We fell in love with the area and became 'accidental hands on developers' of Falling Waters a fifty two acre community....long story. We attend Community Bible Church, (one of the highlights of the area), where Paula sings in the choir. We keep busy taking care of the development...mowing, blowing leaves, weed whacking, planting flowers etc. We like to take short trips in our 5th wheel when we can.

Neil Van Hoogen purchased this apartment in 1998

Why Neil Van Hoogen chose Highlands

Great location, Just 2.4 miles from downtown Highlands, gated gentle land good for walking, building..waterfalls and creeks.

Lot Prices range from $129,000 to $379,000 --waterfall view. We have a cottage section visit highlandscottages.com for those looking to downsize.

What makes this apartment unique

Privacy, Peace & Quiet

  • 5 of 5

Tree top views are a hallmark of this woodland cabin. Clean cabin with AMAZING owners! They graciously provided many creature comforts that were above and beyond what you normally would experience in other rentals. Very convenient to town, yet so very lovely and private. What are you waiting for? Don't hesitate... Book this place already!

A wonderful experience!

  • 5 of 5

The owner's thought of everything when they built the Nest for Two. It has everything that you need, even if you forgot to bring shampoo! The Nest for Two is exceptionally clean and cozy. It is convenient to town, but well off the beaten path. It is very tranquil and beautiful. The Nest for Two is our new favorite spot.

Nest Near Best

  • 4 of 5

Great location (10 minutes from Highlands). The place is just as described. Apartment over garage -- private balcony overlooking the woods. Hosts were fantastically prepared -- instructions for appliances, light switches labeled, helpful tips, clean, clean, clean. This is a popular spot and with good reason. Tips -- don't rely on your GPS to get there. The neighborhood is isolated -- just what you want in mountains. Only one downside -- the floors squeak, which is only a problem if you're a light sleeper and you're sharing the bed.

All the restaurants were good. Walk the shops on Main Street. Look inside the churches if they're open. Go in the summer to escape the heat and the fall for the colors.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the compliments here. It's kind of the nature of rustic pine flooring to expand, contract & squeak. But we will look for the culprit and nail him down!!!

Perfect get-away!

  • 5 of 5

This little nest in the trees is perfect for a couple who want "us" time! Relax, refresh and enjoy the quiet and the mountain beauty! When entering this hide away, you are surprised at the attention to comfort and visual appeal of this carriage house! I could have stayed much longer but sorry to say, someone was coming in on our departure day! I did tell Paula I might become a "squatter" there ! It is just a short drive into the village of Highlands where shopping is wonderful and the food superb! We played golf at Sky Valley and that is a lovely little course a short drive away. There is nothing I can say that is a negative to this rental except..... that we had to leave! Loved it!

Tasteful retreat

  • 5 of 5

It is somewhat misleading to regard this as a garage apartment. Think more a one bedroom residence over a two-car garage. It is in an upscale neighborhood just 5 minutes or so from Main Street in Highlands. It is removed from the bustle of this beautiful town, but neighbors prevent any feeling of isolation. The accommodation is very well-planned, tastefully decorated and could not be better maintained. Sitting on the terrace, you do not overlook any other property in Falling Waters. High marks for location, value and facilities. We would definitely return.

Owner's Response: Thank you for upgrading our description here! It is true--some have said they could live here! So much for the tiny house movement! We enjoy it ourselves between guests--it does feel as though you are in the trees in a cozy retreat. We love to make you feel comfortable!
