Perfect for a romantic get away...

Secluded but not remote, just 2.6 miles from Main St. Highlands.EXTRA NICE & CLEAN, very private upstairs Coach House apartment. Like new, built in 2008 . Full kitchen including dish washer, new king size bed 2016.. Spacious ,light and airy with windows on 4 sides. Located in beautiful and well groomed Falling Waters community. Nice walking neighborhood, very little traffic, mostly easy terrain..go up to Hide Away Hill if you like more challenge or walk down to the bottom of the falls if you want burning buns. Stop at the little creek-side park and and watch the brook go by. There are lots of birds, wild flowers and little critters around.

About Neil Van Hoogen

We came to the Highlands area in 1996 from Palm Beach County Florida after retiring (Show & Sell publications). We fell in love with the area and became 'accidental hands on developers' of Falling Waters a fifty two acre community....long story. We attend Community Bible Church, (one of the highlights of the area), where Paula sings in the choir. We keep busy taking care of the development...mowing, blowing leaves, weed whacking, planting flowers etc. We like to take short trips in our 5th wheel when we can.

Mountain Perfection

My college age daughter and I spent Thanksgiving in this wonderful mountain retreat. The design and décor of this unit are charming and everything was spotless. Neil and Paula even helped out with loaning us a baking pan for our hens! The home is located a couple of miles from a town full of shops and restaurants, but you get the total mountain experience staying in this "treehouse." We hope to return!

Awesome place to spend a fall getaway

If you're looking for an outstanding private location to spend some time in the mountains this is it. We went in peak fall foliage season but it would be great any time of year. Weather you're looking for an elegant secluded home base or a place to cook an intimate dinner, this is it. Paula and Neil made us feel like house guests. We will return.

Quiet and relaxing getaway in wonderful location

Lovely and quiet location with beautiful views from upper level deck without having to look at any other house -- only woods. Just the right amount of cozy space for two people with every amenity you can imagine. Great location close to downtown Highlands but also easy to immediately get out of town to explore winding roads and hiking trails. Owner and host Neil was incredibly helpful when we got lost and had trouble with motorcycle making the steep grade (just took some practice). Will definitely consider coming back again.

The perfect place to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary

Neil and Paula's 'Nest' was the perfect accommodation for our two-night escape to Highlands to celebrate our wedding anniversary (and not just because they left us a bottle of champagne in the fridge - thank you!!). It is extremely comfortable and so thoughtfully furnished, with attention clearly paid to every detail. Sun streams in through the windows, and the balcony is the perfect spot to sit with your book in the afternoon or a cocktail in the evening, look out into the woods and truly relax. Great bed, great shower, everything you need to cook for yourselves. Less than 10 minutes' drive into Highlands, where there's ample parking close to the shops and restaurants. The Mountain Grocery was great for take-home meals, and the easy hike to Sunset Rock from the Nature Center is well worth it for the spectacular view. We had a wonderful time in Highlands, and would thoroughly recommend Neil and Paula's Nest for Two.

Beautiful setting and absolutely wonderful accommodations. Comfort and luxury combined !

The Nest for Two was fantastic! The design and attention to detail was amazing. Beautiful , comfortable, and cozy inside and out ! The accommodations were a wonderful use of space, with awesome windows and lighting that brought the outside in-- the wonderful deck area was like being up in a giant treehouse where we started and ended each day in this unique mountain retreat.The furnishings were tasteful , bed was amazingly comfortable ( awesome linens and pillows) , and kitchen area had everything you could possibly need. Top of the line appliances and plenty of kitchen necessities ( china, glassware, and even a full supply of K cups , teas, cream and sugar/ sugar substitutes).Amazing attention to detail ! Everything you could possibly think of or need , had already been addressed.The Nest was immaculate and looked brand new !

The hosts, Neil and Paula, are wonderful people, very gracious and attentive without being intruding. We were given our space , but knew that we could call on them at anytime for any thing ! They are friendly and and warm and made us feel "at home" immediately.

The Nest is wonderfully convenient to downtown- easy drive to Main Street in less than 10 minutes. It is very centrally located to surrounding areas , local points of interest, making it a good jumping off place to explore the Highlands/Cashiers area.

We had a wonderful stay and could not have asked for more! It met all our needs and exceeded our expectations ;)

Perfect Stay

What a great getaway! We love visiting Highlands, and Neil and Paula's "Nest for Two" was perfect for us. Though quiet and secluded, it is close to town. Driving up to the property, we immediately felt relaxed as we drove down the winding road to the home. As we opened the door to the carriage house, we loved it right away. It is not only immaculate, but it just felt like everything was so carefully chosen for guests. The pictures don't do it justice; it was even nicer than it looks online. Looking around, Paula has thought of everything. It is obvious she takes great pride in making the unit so comfy and welcoming. She also makes sure she gives you directions for anything you might need.

A few of our favorite things included: the awesome reading chairs inside, soft, luxurious sheets, the beautifully decorated bed, the bathroom skylight, the cozy kitchen, and the wonderful light from all the windows on all four sides. However, our very favorite aspect of the apartment was the deck and very comfortable deck chairs and ottomans. We loved sitting outside, and we ended up cancelling some of our plans to just sit and talk, read, and enjoy the beautiful view. We visit a lot of properties as we travel, and one of our pet peeves is when property owners leave the cushions for outside furniture outside all the time. While this might LOOK good, it often results in visitors not being able to enjoy them. I loved that they placed them inside, and we were careful to always bring them in when we left the property....Highlands is known for pop-up showers. If you enjoy nature, there is nothing better than sitting outside watching the hummingbirds and enjoying the flowers.

If you are thinking about visiting this beautiful town, this is a perfect place to stay. We briefly chatted with Neil and Paula, and they were very gracious. Thank you for sharing your home with us!

Abundant restaurant guides, hiking guides, golf & river rafting info, historical books about Highlands, even suggestions for things to do on a rainy day!---all available in the apartment. Check out our favorite singer, Cy Timmons in The Hummingbird Lounge, at The Old Edwards Inn on Friday and Saturday eves at 8pm. Highlands Playhouse and PAC theater plays are 1st rate! Be sure and meet all the wonderful people at Bear Mountain Outfitters, @ 302 Main St., corner of 3rd and Main. The Highlands Nature Center has a beautiful walking areas. Dry Sink---for cooks & greeting card & gift aficionados. For take out and/or casual eat-in try Highlands Smokehouse and Mt. Fresh Grocery Store. Finally, walk UNDER 'Dry Falls' and visit Sunset Rock and watch the sunset over the top of our town! Priceless.
