Evia, Greece's second largest island after Crete, is an island of outstanding natural beauty that is worth experiencing. Undiscovered south Evia is characterized by the diversity of scenery and landscape: unspoilt countryside with majestic mountains and gorges that run through green valleys and meet remote beaches creating a coastline of cliffs, bays and coves, scattered with time-forgotten villages and several archaeological sites.
Evia island is easily accessible all year round via road bridge (Chalkida) or ferry crossings. The most popular and convenient route from Athens airport to Porto Buffalo (South Evia) is as follows:
Athens Airport - Agia Marina ferry-port: 35km (approx.1 hr. drive)
Ferry-crossing (Agia Marina - Nea Styra) : 45 mins
Nea Styra - Porto Buffalo: 28km (approx. 20 mins drive)
Total travel time: approx. 2hrs 15mins. Car hire essential.

Wonderful spot for a relaxing holiday!
Old Olives is the perfect for a holiday for so many reasons! We spent just under 2 weeks there with our 2 children (who loved it!)
The location is lovely, you are right next to the sea and you can see the fish swimming around from your deckchair!
The flat is comfortable, has everything that you need and more! The beds are comfortable and kitchen is well equipped. The garden is wonderful and the table outside is perfect for eating and generally relaxing. Having kayaks to use is amzing and definitely worth trying!!
Iris and Photis are amazing hosts and make you feel very welcome. We arrived late and were provided with food (and cold beer or wine!) to tide us over. Throughout the stay they were there to answer any queries we had and just to have a good chat. They definitely made the holiday that extra bit special!
Porto Buffalo is a lovely quiet little port with a couple of tavernas, the people are very friendly and food lovely.
Evia island is a gem with so many gorgeous beaches and places to explore. If you like walking there is lots on offer. We did the Dimitrios gorge which was fairly easy (but wear trousers!!).
It is a nature lovers dream - particularly at the time of year we were there - flowers everywhere, buzzing with life, swallows and fly catchers in the garden, not to mention the odd golden eagle circling overhead!
Perfect garden apartment with beautiful views
If you want to get away, really away and have no problems with a 15 min drive to the local store, this is an excellent location and you have to look no further.
Owner Iris makes sure all your wishes are taken care of: cleaning, fixing things and extensive welcome package, it is all there. The description is all true but when you are really there sitting in the garden and viewing another beautiful sunset, it’s even better than you imagined. We loved the barbecue place and if we ever come back, we will make sure that we know how to use the Greek style baking oven!
As mentioned in another review, the kitchen has everything you need, bedrooms and bathrooms are fine and outside there are plenty of extra’s available to enjoy your time; the hammocks, canoes, bikes etc.
The Tavern in Porto Boufalo is nearby (just a 5 minutes stroll down) and serves excellent fish dishes. Fish caught with the boats you’re looking at in the lovely outdoor sitting area with atmospheric lighting. Service is good and you feel welcome.
When you are exploring the countryside, you’re certainly not disappointed. There are several secluded beaches (at 30 mins drive) with the most lovely Taverns Greece has to offer. This is where you find the hospitality which is long gone in the popular tourist areas. Food is simple but tasteful and prices are low. We rented a Suzuki jeep and explored the Dimosaris gorge. A one hour drive through authentic rural Greek countryside ending in a beautiful little enclosed gorge. No signs, no shops, no tourists, just us having a good time.
So, yes, in any aspect this well hidden gem just 2 hours outside Athens is worth all it five stars!
In short, we absolutely loved everything about Old Olives. Iris was super friendly and efficient in all her dealings with us over the booking, and her family all sure we were well looked after during our stay. We were delighted to find, on arrival, that they had gone to the trouble of supplying us with fruit, vegetables, and olive oil - a very welcoming start. The apartment itself is cosy, well equipped and, importantly, has two full bathrooms. The kitchen has more utensils than we have at home, so cooking is easy. There is not a huge amount of space - perfectly adequate for four - but the outside area is so attractive that we only spent time inside for sleeping and cooking.
The outside dining area is excellent (bring mozzie spray for evenings) and the seating area overlooking the bay is superb. We sat there every day playing guitar, drinking wine or doing nothing but staring at the view…. It was great to have the canoes, too, and yes, the sea really is just twenty steps from the garden gate.
Care hire is vital for shopping and reaching sandy beaches. We would recommend bringing jellies or reef shoes as some of the waters around Evia have spiny urchins. But but do not let this put you off as the sea is crystal clear and beautiful for swimming and snorkelling – we just wore our reef shoes when appropriate.
Porto Buffalo is quiet. One taverna is open regularly, another one occasionally. We got into a routine of having lunch out each day at restaurants on the various beaches and eating in most evenings. Old Olives is a lovely spot for a relaxed evening meal and we could drink without worrying about driving home. There is also a restaurant with fab home cooking directly opposite the bakery in the village on the hill (Zarakes). The owners there, as well as the people in the bakery (yummy baklava) were exceptionally friendly, just like everybody else we met on Evia.
It is not an island with a thriving tourist industry, so you are made to feel very special when you visit there. We stayed a month and only heard English spoken once – apart from when people made the effort to communicate with us. A smattering of Greek – at least an understanding of menus – is useful, and every time we made an effort to communicate in Greek it seemed to go down well – and we usually got what we thought we had ordered! Finally, Evia is very affordable if you are on a budget. Best restaurant prices we have found anywhere in Greece.
A definite five stars. Thanks Iris!
A beautiful apartment in a lovely setting
This apartment is an absolute gem. Inside it is attractive, comfortable and exceptionally well equipped, but it's the outside space that is such a great delight. Beyond the covered terrace is the most lovely garden with a number of different sitting places in the shade or sun. My favourite place was overlooking the gorgeous bay with its little island; at sunset the view was spectacular especially when lights started to come on across on the mainland. With easy access to the crystal clear water right at the end of the garden, with sun beds and a sunshade for relaxing and two canoes for fun, it was very hard to tear ourselves away. We explored several of the local beaches but felt that for swimming and relaxing, it was hard to beat Old Olives!
If you want to cook, the kitchen has everything you could possibly need. For eating out there are 3 tavernas a few minutes away. One, attached to some apartments on the other side of the bay, seemed a bit lacking in atmosphere; the second was tiny and unmarked so you could easily miss it, and when we tried to eat there they had run out of everything except kalamari! So we only ate at Akrogiali, where Stella was very welcoming and the food was good. However choice was limited, as you would expect from such a small place. Although there is no shop, the baker and the fruit and veg seller come round in their vans every day, and the shop 10 minutes away in Zarakes has most things you might need.
This property has been a family's summer home for many years and this is evident in the love and care with which it has been furnished and equipped. We met both Iris and parents, Jill and Yiorgo, who could not have been more friendly and helpful.
We would highly recommend this beautiful place to anyone who is looking for 'the real Greece' far away from organised tourism.
Perfect location for a relaxing holiday
Old Olives is the perfect property for a very quiet, relaxing holiday in a part of real Greece. The owners provided everything to make our holiday so comfortable. We were warmly welcomed and made to feel at home. There were three seating areas to choose from outside, all with fantastic views and the canoes were great fun. Inside the house was perfect- all necessary equipment in the kichen- more than we've ever seen before in Greek accommodation.
The location was stunning, simply the best on this side of the island and to have direct access to the water was fabulous.
I'd recommend this to anyone who really wanted to get away from it all and be relaxed straight away. Enjoy the warm evenings in the comfortable chairs under the wonderful old olives!
Old Olives villa is located in Porto Buffalo, a peaceful picturesque fishing village that remains refreshingly untouched despite its proximity to Athens. It is an ideal ‘get away’ place and yet a convenient base for easy day trips to explore south Evia's natural, cultural and historical diversity and experience authentic Greece. Walk down the old cobble-stoned garden path and the sea is at your feet. You're just ten steps away (literally) from a rejuvenating quick dip anytime of the day or night and 2 minutes stroll down to the picturesque harbour with 3 tavernas. Nearest amenities by car: Zarakes village (5mins): mini-market, pharmacy, bakery, grocery, butchery, pizzeria, souvlaki shop, cafe. Nea Styra (20 mins): petrol station, cash points, pharmacy, mini-markets, shops, cafes and tavernas. Aliveri (20 mins): a bustling market town with all amenities - banks, supermarkets, post-office, medical centre, internet cafe, and international news-stand.
