The entrance opens into a well furnished living room which features original chestnut beams, one stone wall and a coffee table locally crafted from beams used in the Quinta. There is a sofa, 2 armchairs, TV with over 600 cable channels, including German satellite channels, broadband access and table lamps for reading. Beyond, the kitchen/diner has table/chairs for 4, an electric hob, oven, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, toaster, and kettle and plenty of serving/cooking equipment. The bedroom can be made up with 1 large double or 2 single beds & has mahogany chest of drawers with mirror above. These three charmingly restored gems sit within the 4-acre working estate of Quinta Vista Alegre where bananas and vines are grown and century-old tropical gardens are tended. Astonishingly, this oasis of tranquility is found in the main tourist zone of Funchal, near the sea and Belmond Reid's Palace Hotel.
Converted from the old Billiard House, Stables and Factor’s accommodation the cottage walls are of original stone and interiors are spacious, characterful and well designed with top quality furnishings and equipment.
A private, electric entrance gate leads to a shared car park and a short, cobbled driveway. Each cottage is self- contained with 1 bedroom/bathroom and an outlook of tropical fruit trees and plants. 2 have patios shaded by vines in warmer months and 2 are entirely ground-floor, ideal for those less mobile. The resident owners speak English and Portuguese. The properties are adult only and do not accept children. The swimming pool may be used between 09:00 and 17:00 and is shared with the owner and their family (for a few days of the year this may include children).’
WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE: Opposite the entrance to Quinta Vista Alegre (where the cottages are) is the entrance to Quinta Magnolia, previously an British Country Club which is now Government owned. Here you can enjoy beautiful gardens, a fitness circuit, and two tennis courts, all set in an area of about 40.000 square meters.
Just down the road you have the oldest and possibly most prestigious hotel on the island, Belmond Reid's Palace, where they serve the famous afternoon 'Tea at Reid's' on the terrace overlooking the gardens and ocean. (Pre-booking necessary.) Nearby are other excellent hotels and a good variety of restaurants, cafés, bars, shows and concerts.
You can enjoy sea swimming at the public Lido about 1 km by foot, or you may just want to walk along the coast in this area.
The nearest small supermarket is less than 5 minutes' walk.
Buses/taxis are close and frequent. A car is not essential but advisable to explore this beautiful island.
ABOUT QUINTA VISTA ALEGRE: The 4 acre estate of Quinta Vista Alegre has been in the Zino family for 70 years, the owners being the third generation. The main house was built around 1867. It is a working Quinta growing vines and bananas in the centre of Funchal. Much of the garden was laid out by an English family, the Stanfords, between 1902 and 1912 and Charles Thomas-Stanford wrote “Leaves from a Madeira Garden” about his garden and the island.
The “Vista cottages” are in the original stone, set among the bananas and vines, having been converted from the old Billiard House and Stables and Factors accommodation.
The holiday cottages have all the Lodging Alojamento Local licences nº151/2009
We were very pleased with the property and it exceeded our expectations.
We found the owners very friendly and helpful and the cottage itself very spacious and well equipped. We found we could walk down to the harbour in about 15 minutes and to the Lido in the other directionin about the same time. We also found we could walk to a number of restaurants in both directions in 5 minutes or so which made eating out easy. We found it very pleasant to sit around the pool which is very sheltered and on the patio surrounded by banana trees. We thoroughly resommend this property and would certainly return to it if we should visit Madeira in the future.

My husband and I recently spent a very relaxing week in Loja Da Lenha. The apartment has many positives – it’s spacious, clean, modern, tastefully decorated and well-equipped. The owners are also very nice and friendly.
The property's greatest strength has to be its location – the apartment is surrounded by a small banana plantation which contributes to the tropical feel of the place. We especially took delight in picking the ripe fruit for our breakfast each morning! There is a small table and chairs on the lawn outside the apartment which is perfect for enjoying the outdoor area (especially at meal times). The large and well maintained pool is also a great bonus.
Whilst the apartment sits in tranquil and in luscious surrounds, it is extremely well located – the centre of town and its restaurants are accessible by foot.
I would recommend this apartment to any couple who wishes to spend a relaxing week in Madeira somewhere comfortable, well located and with a bit of character.
We stayed for most of May at Loja da Lenha. . Until this year we have stayed at a good Hotel but decided to try somewhere else. It was brilliant. Well equipped, comfortable, spotless and with firm mattresses on the beds. Frank and Buffy are very welcoming. The location is ideal - one really can walk into Funchal and it is near the Ferry Terminal for Porto Santo Island ( a great place to visit), Reids Palace Hotel ( fantastic for afternoon tea) and a range of grocery/coffee shops. All the couples we met seemed like us to like peace and quiet. The pool is very good and I swam most days. If one wants to go to Church - Penha de Franca RC Church ( 20 minute walk) has a service every Sunday at 10.30 in English and its full. The priest is remarkable and welcomes all religions ( we are Methodists). We think it was a super experience and quite a 'find' - Surrey UK couple.
A little bit of old Funchal within easy reach of the town centre and close to restaurants and bars.
We loved Loja da Lenha and are recommending it to our friends. The accommodation is extremely well appointed, very comfortable, and it’s on a banana farm --- perfect.
We have just returned from a wonderful holiday on the lovely island of Madeira. Our accommodation at Loja Da Lenha more than met our expectations. It is of very high standard furnished very tastefully and well maintained, everything you would need. The setting is very tranquil surrounded by banana trees and vines, a lovely swimming pool and very friendly and helpful owners.
The properties are centrally situated in Funchal with shops and good restaurants within a short walk.
This is a fantastic place to stay, truly 5 star!
Buffy welcomed us for our one week stay with fresh fruit and Madeira wine and a quick tour of this beautiful apartment.
The apartment is spacious, very clean and well appointed the kitchen has all mod-cons with plenty of space to eat.
We were impressed with the peace and quiet, the secure parking and the super pool.
We will definitely visit again.
PS. be prepared for mosquitoes in the evening

This was the most beautiful apartment we have ever stayed in! The host was friendly, the cab driver was friendly. When you walk through the gate you find yourself surrounded by banana & grape plants. It's like walking into paradise! There was a nice pool where you can swim in. And then the apartment, nicely decorated. Everything is clean and proper. We had a really nice time in Madeira. Only thing less positive was the fact that you had to climb up an hill to get to the apartment. For us not a problem, but worth mentioning.
Highly recommended! Greetings the Dutch people.
Madeira’s charming capital town of Funchal, with its 140,000 inhabitants, sits in a large bowl that rises from a natural deep-water harbour on the south of this sub tropical island to an impressive backdrop of high mountains. It is the island’s centre of activity, with something for everyone such as: a theatre, chic shops, street stalls, open market, wine lodges, museums, city parks, bars, cafés and endless restaurants, multi-screen cinema, a 15th century Roman Catholic Cathedral and an Anglican Church built in 1822. This beautiful island is famous for its tropical gardens, two championship golf courses, truly wonderful mountain and coastal walking, ocean swimming, sailing, game fishing, etc. and, above all, its friendly Portuguese inhabitants. Verdant and with varied topography and stunning scenery, it is definitely worth exploring the island and the new network of roads. For local info, please see 'FURTHER DETAILS'.
Other Activities: Madeira is famous for its tropical gardens and its 'levada' walks which extend into the beautiful mountain areas with dramatic scenery.
