Casa do Feitor (Factor's House) has comfortable 1st floor accommodation with a large balcony, suitable for 2 guests. Accessed by an old stone staircase, the front door opens into a living room with sofa, 2 armchairs, a coffee table locally crafted from chestnut beams used in the Quinta, a desk, side tables, a TV with over 300 channels, including German satellite channels , broadband access and table lamps. Beyond, the kitchen/diner has table/seating for 4, an electric hob, oven, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, toaster and kettle and plenty of crockery/serving/cooking/storage equipment. Sliding glass doors lead to the deck-floored balcony with wicker table & 2 chairs. The double bedroom has a mahogany chest of drawers with mirror above and a full length mirror. The bathroom has bath with shower, basin, bidet, loo, heated towel rail and a fitted double hanging cupboard (with small safe). Linen, bath towels and weekly cleaning are provided. The family pool is available 9-5 daily.
These three charmingly restored gems sit within the 4-acre working estate of Quinta Vista Alegre where bananas and vines are grown and century-old tropical gardens are tended. Astonishingly, this oasis of tranquility is found in the main tourist zone of Funchal, near the sea and Belmond Reid's Palace Hotel.
Converted from the old Billiard House, Stables and Factor’s accommodation the cottage walls are of original stone and interiors are spacious, characterful and well designed with top quality furnishings and equipment.
A private, electric entrance gate leads to a shared car park and a short, cobbled driveway. Each cottage is self- contained with 1 bedroom/bathroom and an outlook of tropical fruit trees and plants. 2 have patios shaded by vines in warmer months and 2 are entirely ground-floor, ideal for those less mobile. The resident owners speak English and Portuguese. The properties are adult only and do not accept children. The swimming pool may be used between 09:00 and 17:00 and is shared with the owner and their family (for a few days of the year this may include children).’
WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE: Opposite the entrance to Quinta Vista Alegre (where the cottages are) is the entrance to Quinta Magnolia, previously an British Country Club which is now Government owned. Here you can enjoy beautiful gardens, a fitness circuit, and two tennis courts, all set in an area of about 40.000 square meters.
Just down the road you have the oldest and possibly most prestigious hotel on the island, Belmond Reid's Palace, where they serve the famous afternoon 'Tea at Reid's' on the terrace overlooking the gardens and ocean. (Pre-booking necessary.) Nearby are other excellent hotels and a good variety of restaurants, cafés, bars, shows and concerts.
You can enjoy sea swimming at the public Lido about 1 km by foot, or you may just want to walk along the coast in this area.
The nearest small supermarket is less than 5 minutes' walk.
Buses/taxis are close and frequent. A car is not essential but advisable to explore this beautiful island.
ABOUT QUINTA VISTA ALEGRE: The 4 acre estate of Quinta Vista Alegre has been in the Zino family for 70 years, the owners being the third generation. The main house was built around 1867. It is a working Quinta growing vines and bananas in the centre of Funchal. Much of the garden was laid out by an English family, the Stanfords, between 1902 and 1912 and Charles Thomas-Stanford wrote “Leaves from a Madeira Garden” about his garden and the island.
The “Vista cottages” are in the original stone, set among the bananas and vines, having been converted from the old Billiard House and Stables and Factors accommodation.
The holiday cottages have all the Lodging Alojamento Local licences nº151/2009
We had a great holiday. Sadly the weather was not it’s usual sunny self so we did not take advantage of the pool. The property is central and ideal for either walking into town or catching the bus before making onward connections for independent walking. We enjoyed walking the Levadas using the Underwoods, Walking and Eating Maderia, although we did enjoy good basic food from the tourist menu at Café Espero on the top road.
The apartment was large, spacious and spotlessly clean. The kitchen was well equipped. The windows were all well netted. The only tiny down side was the noise of the Lorries going up the hill when we needed the windows open one humid night. I noticed that there were fans but no air conditioning. This might be a problem during the summer. We ended up shutting the window and soon dropped off to sleep in the King size bed….bliss.
In the mornings I loved opening the bedroom shutters trying to see the cruise ships in the dock, you could just see the funnels. You knew to look as some of them tooted as they came into the harbor in the evening.
The fresh fruit, (oranges, pears and bananas,) from the garden, along with the bottle of Madeira wine was very generous and a welcome touch.
Despite the weather it was a great holiday and your efficient booking arrangements, combined with the general organisation of Madeira, meant that we did have the easy and relaxing break that we were after

Spacious and well thought out accomodation in a beautifully finished refurbished building. The standard of furnishing, including appliances, was very high and was everything that we had been led to expect and more. The swimming pool was clean and welcoming. Each of the three apartments is designed so that it is private from the other two. The complex is conveniently situated close to all amenities and only a 15 minute walk into the centre of Funchal albeit uphill coming back. It is close to the city so there was a certain amount of traffic noise which did not cause us a problem. The transfer from the airport was seamless and the owners and staff always helpful and obliging. All in all we had a splendid holiday and we would thoroughly recommend it.
We're almost reluctant to review this property but that would be selfish of us. Having found it, we don't want to share it.
We can honestly say that we have never stayed anywhere like it. It's like a different world - peace and quiet reign. The cottage was beautifully furnished and had everything you could need - a fully fitted kitchen, balcony, TV , dvd player, books, Wi-Fi. There is even a washing machine and a tumble dryer available. Every home comfort is provided.
Outside is spectacular with vines and banana trees. The large pool is beautiful with loungers and umbrellas. We spent every morning at the pool and sometimes returned for a swim later in the day.
Buffy and Frank made us very welcome, as did the dogs who came to see us most days.
The property is well within walking distance of the centre of Funchal and all amenities including supermarkets and restaurants.
We've fallen in love with Casa do Feitor and hope to have many more holidays there.
We really can't praise this beautiful property highly enough.
This was our first visit to Madeira and we found Casa Do Feitor perfect in every way. We felt really at home and instantly relaxed. Some days we were reluctant to open the gates and venture into the outside world.
The owners, Buffy and Frank, are very special people

Our stay here was part of our 50th Wedding Anniversary celebrations. The accommodation here did not let us down. The comfortable apartment is fully equipped for self catering although there are many places to eat out close by. We had a car and although the entrance is a bit tight after a while presents no problem. Owners Frank and Buffy made us most welcome. We would definitely recommend this property.
Apart from a couple of niggles, which could have been avoided had the owners, who were on holiday, left someone on site to ensure that guests were OK, this is a def recommend from us.
Do not, like us, make the mistake in hiring a car, unless you are a professional driver, or a masochist, or own an Insurance Company. The only access to the cottages is so difficult that we elected to largely stay on site, as the thought of having to return through the entrance spoiled any excursions.
Madeira’s charming capital town of Funchal, with its 140,000 inhabitants, sits in a large bowl that rises from a natural deep-water harbour on the south of this sub tropical island to an impressive backdrop of high mountains. It is the island’s centre of activity, with something for everyone such as: a theatre, chic shops, street stalls, open market, wine lodges, museums, city parks, bars, cafés and endless restaurants, multi-screen cinema, a 15th century Roman Catholic Cathedral and an Anglican Church built in 1822. This beautiful island is famous for its tropical gardens, two championship golf courses, truly wonderful mountain and coastal walking, ocean swimming, sailing, game fishing, etc. and, above all, its friendly Portuguese inhabitants. Verdant and with varied topography and stunning scenery, it is definitely worth exploring the island and the new network of roads. For local info, please see 'FURTHER DETAILS'.
Other Activities: Madeira is famous for its tropical gardens and its 'levada' walks which extend into the beautiful mountain areas with dramatic scenery.
