About Simona Tofani

I am a florentine in love with Florence! But I also love to travel and always look for places that can make me feel home away from home. So I prepared these properties asking myself what I, as a traveller, would have loved to find in a rental property and try to do my best to accomplish this goal. That's why you'll find tea and coffee available on your arrival or the home fragances to welcome you at the property.

Simona Tofani purchased this apartment in 2005

Why Simona Tofani chose Florence

From the very first moment we, my mom and me, visited the apartment (the actual Simona unit) we realized it was special.. Even if it had to be entirely restored (believe me, it was terrible!!) we felt it was very special..

The terrace and the view on these 800 years old stone walls of San Remigio chuch, the tower of Palazzao Vecchio so beautiful at any time of the day.. the calm and tranquility while just a stone away from everything, a few steps and you get to the crowded and lively Via de neri.. The apartment really needed to be updated but the display was gorgeous.. All moved, perfectly designed to have a sleeping area and a daily area, the ancient ceiling in the sitting room.. A house of carachter..We fell in love at a the very first sight!!!

The same happend when we were able to purchase the property beside (the actual Francesca unit) which has its own carachter too.. Again we entirely restored it but what a result!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Every thing was fine...a very hearty stay in Florence and so near to all the city sights. We can recomend. Carola & Eric

Great apartment in the Noe Valley part of SF

  • 5 of 5

This is a great apartment in Noe Valley (Castro and 24th Street)- beautifully furnished with great artwork. My wife and I and 2 kids spent 3 nights here because we thought (and were right) that it would be more relaxing than a hotel room. The small garden was the perfect place for sharing a bottle of wine.

The only small downside is that the front bedroom gets the noise of the street with some traffic from around 7am - however not a problem if you want to get up and enjoy SF. I always managed to park my car within 1 or 2 blocks. Buses and trams are available to take you into town about 2 blocks away. The agent whom I dealt with when arranging the lease was very co-operative and willing to be helpful.

Now for the best bit. This apartment is on 24th street near Castro and is in a really cool neighbourhood for bars, retaurants (American, Italian, Spanish, Asian, South-American and more - no fast food outlets in sight), boutique-type stores, coffee-shops (Starbucks and fantastic local ones), a wonderful cheese store, great wine stores. It feels like a proper neighbourhood, and is clean and friendly. We started and finished our days on 24th street with a trip into the heart of SF during the day.

As an Englishman living in Houston, it was great!

This property exceeded all expectations in every way! Perfect location, Gorgeous place

  • 5 of 5

We had read all the reviews of this property before we booked it - but both the property and Simona herself exceeded all expectations. It is in the very best location - short walks to the Duomo, Ufizzi, Santa Croce, Piazza Michelangelo, the Ponte Vecchio and about 15 minutes from the train station. The decorating is lovely with every possible amenity one could ask for in the kitchen (including a large bottle of home-made olive oil), coffee, and a welcome basket of fruit. We also loved the terrace and used it all the time as the weather was nice and it was covered so that we could use it even when it rained. Best of all Simona was AMAZING. Her "guidebook" helped us with directions for everything in the apartment, local restaurants, sightseeing, etc. She was always available by either e-mail or phone in case we had questions or needed help. Also, there was a lovely potted garden on the patio that included fresh spices - oregano, thyme, sage, rosemary - so that we could make fresh sauces. We were at the apartment for 23 days and loved every minute of our stay. I would definitely book this apartment again. One more note - WalkAbout tours is at the end of the block - we took two tours (Cooking Class, and Chianti Wine Tour) and both were fantastic. The guides spoke perfect English and we would highly recommend this tour company to everyone.

Perfection Location, Very Comfortable Apartment with Outstanding Terrace!

  • 5 of 5

I know Florence very well - worked in the Fashion Industry for 20 years and visited a few times a year on business. So, I knew the location that I wanted which was near the Piazza Della Signoria and Sante Croce. This beautiful apartment, meticulously maintained by the owner, was the perfect, most convenient location. Florence is a small walking city but I feel that this area of the city is my favorite. Except, of course, if you were on the Arno overlooking the Ponte Vecchio!

The apartment was spacious, and filled with light, and the doors open to a large terrace, and the terrace faces an old stone church on a small street, the Via Vinegia. The master bedroom and the kitchen and dining room face out, and get lots of light, and the smaller bedroom and living room face the courtyard. The photos of the apartment on the website look exactly like the apartment, which is clean and comfortably furnished. The large dining room table was great! The bathroom is very nice and brand new.

Beds were very comfortable, the WIFI worked very well, and we did not have any complaints. We did not cook in the kitchen as this was a girl's trip, not a family trip. However, I think this apartment would be perfect for my family of 4.

We did day trips to Venice and Cinque Terre while we were there enjoying 7 days of perfect sunshine and blue skies and 70 degree weather in April 2016.

I would gladly stay there again, and my friend and I both loved the apartment, and the nice way we treated by the owner, Simona. She is there to help and was kind and gracious.

Fantastic Apartment. Beautifully decorated and a great location.

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was well decorated, had modern appliances, was clean and spacious. Simona and family could not have been more helpful with our late hour arrival, showing us how all the appliances and TV worked, and helping us with a restaurant reservation that first night. The beds were very comfortable and the rooms spacious. The outdoor patio was especially nice with lovely plants and a view of the church and street. We spent 8 nights at this apartment, which is within walking distance of just about any site you want to visit. Numerous restaurants and gelato stores were only steps away, and it was only a short walk to a very nice grocery store. Our departure at 4 in the morning via taxi was of some concern, but Simona assisted by arranging for the early morning taxi which was exactly on time. I would highly recommend this apartment for its location and for exceptional customer service. Our stay could not have been more enjoyable!

Good and Bad

  • 4 of 5

I know there is review after review about the cleanliness of the property. Yes, that is true.

I want anyone reading this to know about what isn't said previously.

Points to note are:

1. If you are there over a Friday and Saturday night, the noise below the master bedroom window is way beyond typical city noise. Seems this is a popular alley for the young drunks to gather from bars and who yell and scream at each other until 4:30 am. If you are 25 years old then you won't care, but if you are 55 or older it's awful. On other nights of the week the noise starts at 4 am with loud talking below who are heading to work I suspect. The window is only approx. 14 feet above the street.

2. The owner tracks electrical usage. No other VBRO has done this. By making customers paranoid about running up a bill (similiar to our cell phone data plans) on their vacations, I feel is poor property management. Stop showing us how to track the electric meter. We paid a lot for our stay and they nickeled us for the small electric bill. Geez. Hidden variable fee. How do you ever turn on the AC in the summer?

3. Don't forget to request extra towels. There is no dryer so your damp towel day after day gets gross and she does leave any spares.

4. The step down from the bedrooms is deadly in the dark. Bring a flashlight.

We were on our honeymoon and I did not enjoy sleeping with my BOSE headphones on to get some rest. The B&B above your room also brings noise as well. We will look for a higher floor property with an elevator/lift and no electric bill next time.

Owner's Response: Dear Vanessa First of all let me thank you for rating the property with 4 stars anyway despite all the problems it seems you had during your staying. I am really sorry you did not enjoy your staying and sorry about the fact you did not get in touch with me. I could have helped to solve some problems (like the courtesy light for the step which is available at the apartment Electricity: yes, we do charge electricity. It's written everywhere, on our account, on the rental agreement that guests are required to revised before proceeding with the reservation, on our reply to each enquiry, yours too. It' s clearly stated everywhere. Nothing is hidden at all.Why we do that? Because we are not an hotel, we don't have the electrical system that turns all the electricity off once you go out from your room. After years of energy abuses and non respectful we have decided to "force" our guests to behave attentively. We clearly explain that this means basically to turn off the lights when not home and to have a proper use of the A/C. The electricity is checked on the official energy company digital counter together with guests that are then free to check it during their staying, right to avoid hidden fees. None of our previous guests have complained about this issue, actually most of them have clearly understood our point. This is not a way to make extra money, most of the time we don't even collect the sum due. Your consumption have been around 5 euro so I presume you are complaining about the policy not about the expense. 8 years of rentals, never had complaints about money issues and plan not to have in the future. We are not that kind of owners that try to squeeze money as much as possible. Sorry, I am very sensitive to this point. I can accept any bad review about whatever issue but not money. And my name is Simona, I am the owner with my sister Francesca and we don't appreciate to be called "poor management owners". It seems previous guests highly appreciated our efforts and availability for them. Towels: we provide a set of 4 towels each guest for the first week staying as all the other properties do.There is a cloth rack and a terrace where you can place towels to dry. Noises: we have been reported from times to times that street noises come through despite the soundproof window. We have found out that that window is not the top of the soundproof quality so a brand new one top of the top is ready to substitute it in mid June. We think this issue will be over

The property is located in a quiet small road, Via Vinegia 2, between Piazza della Signoria and Piazza Santa Croce, in front of the medieval walls of St. Remigio church. We are in a pedestrian area in the very heart of the historical center of Florence. Every famous artistic site can be reached in a few minutes: piazza Duomo, the Uffizi Gallery, Pontevecchio, Palazzo Pitti. The area around the property is full of shops, restaurants, pubs, bars, internet point and wireless cafè and any services needed (supermarket, laundry, pharmacy etc..) This area is known as ZTL (limited traffic area) and from June 2013 it will be pedestrian.
