You will get a warm and cozy feeling from the moment you walk in the door. I built the cabin for that reason. I did not want just another city house. The home is all warm wood. Not a stick of dry wall to be found. The house features two bedrooms both with king beds. There are two more queen beds if you're up to climbing a ladder to a loft over looking the living area. Older kids love this space. There is a fire place in the living area as well as one in the master bedroom. Two full baths. The kitchen is fully equipped with anything you may need. Dining room off the kitchen looks over the lake. The master bedroom and bath will knock your socks off. Large with walk out sliding doors leading to a deck and over looking the lake. A spiral staircase goes up to a office space also looking over the lake. Master bath features a large glass block shower, twin sinks, bidet, private toilet, and a jetted corner tub looking over the lake as well. This a very cozy home and perfect for one couple, two couples or a family with older kids. It has been used for two honeymoon couples and they loved it. Located in a quiet cove with an unspoiled view of the mountains and not a lot of other houses. At times I enjoy the winter most. Light both fire places and curl up to a good book. The house is easy to get to. Just four tenths mile from a US highway. Paved all the way to the door. If you enjoy fun times and crazy things you will enjoy the walls decorated with toboggans, sleds, ice skates, fun posters, old large hornets nest, fishing poles, etc. Enjoy the use of two kayaks on the lake. Now with wifi internet access if you must bring work to the lake. Please be aware this is a NO SMOKING home
I raised three boys at the lake and they grew to love going there. Many of their friends also visit often. During the years we met many nice folks close by. Wonderful place to grow up.
Jim Gardner purchased this cabin in 1967
From the very first time I saw Lake Burton I knew I had to have a piece of paradise. Best thing I ever did.
My favorite part of the cabin is the warmth and cozy feel.
We have not even stayed here, our reservation is for Sept. But Jim and his lovely wife were at the cabin this past weekend and graciously offered to to give us a tour. Within a couple of minutes they had us feeling like family. After we sat at the boathouse and chatted for an hour and half over a couple glasses of chardonnay. It's a perfect cabin on a beautiful spot on the lake. So looking forward to September.
This was our second visit to "High Romance" and it is by far our favorite spot on the lake! We have stayed in several other homes over the last 5 years, but this one feels like home. Mr Gardner is so so nice and easy to work with. He truly wants his guests to have a great time and does whatever he can to make that happen. the master bedroom is huge and has an amazing bathroom with a jacuzzi tub. The guest room is very nice as well and also has a king size bed. Both bedrooms have flat screen tv's with cable/satellite. The dock and boathouse are both great and plenty of room for guests to bring their boat. Great location on the lake for swimming as well because this part of the lake doesn't have as much boat traffic as some of the other parts. The location of the house is great because it is fairly close to town ( Clayton ) and only about a 15 minute drive. The house is always well stocked and turn key ready. We will be back again soon!!
Beautiful private spot on Lake Burton. Very peaceful and quiet. We loved the nostalgic décor and cabin feel of the house. Our sons (19 and 21) loved jumping off the high boat deck down into the cool, refreshing water and fishing from the dock. We enjoyed the kayaks and canoe as well. We rented a ski boat and tube for a day at the local marina and had a blast. The hammock on the porch was my favorite spot to relax. This house was perfect for our family getaway. We will definitely plan on returning one day. In addition, Clayton was an adorable small town. The BBQ at the Wicked Pig was delicious, and the Universal Joint had great food and outside atmosphere.
Can't wait to plan a vacation here again!
My family and another couple enjoyed a great week at Jim's lakehouse. Our favorite area was spending time on the great sprawling deck (the beer fridge on it was helpful). We had fun catching fish off the dock in the evening and the beautiful views. Jim was very easy to communicate with and we would definitely rent this home again. Lake Burton grocery was a short 2 miles away and our go to take out food when we got tired of cooking. My daughter loved the loft bedroom area where she could go and her little brother couldn't get to her. Lots of nooks and crannies for people to have their own space. The old signs on the walls were pretty funny and got some laughs! Thanks for being a great host Jim and we hope to return.
This home is truly beautiful and the owners go out of their way to make you feel welcome. The many docks are and magnificent views from any room in the house make this the perfect get away for for anyone. We are looking forward to going back soon!
There are a LOT of big, expensive, fancy modern houses on Lake Burton. This isn't one of them, and that is a GOOD thing! I doubt any other house on the lake can match this house in terms of the "heart & soul" that has been put into it.
The house is older and is not "huge", but is a classic lake house built and decorated by a wonderful owner who has obviously made the place a very personal retreat. The house makes excellent use of space, and you definitely feel as if it's larger than it really is.
The house has a really fun design inside. If you have kids, they will LOVE the bedroom loft over the living room. It is accessed by a cool ladder, and has a locking security gate at top to prevent groggy kids from falling down! The master bedroom has a private loft as well.
The kitchen had everything we needed; the dining table/room is eclectic and feels like you're in a fun southern restaurant or BBQ joint.
Beds were comfortable. Seating is ample and comfortable.
There are several little nuances or quirks about this older house, but they didn't bother us at all; it's all part of the charm of a well-loved lake house! All you need to do is enjoy the personal nature of a really clean house, step outside to the utter beauty of the lake & mountains, and enjoy your stay! If minor quirks of an older home bug you, maybe look for something newer to rent. Otherwise, this house is very enjoyable.
One thing I think worth mentioning -- the master bedroom has enormous beautiful windows looking out to the lake. That is a wonderful thing, until the sun rises in the morning. There are no shades on the upper windows and the early morning sun (at least in Spring time) will blind. If you plan to sleep in, be prepared. If you are an early-riser, you won't be bothered.
There is a dock, and a boat-house with a 2nd story deck on top. The views are beautiful. The owner provided kayaks with paddles and vests. The kids loved it.
The owner is wonderful to work with, and is a genuinely nice person. We got along great, and feel like we know him :).
The lake itself is one of the best around; clean water, well-maintained, etc.!
As guests, we enjoyed sharing the owner's little slice of heaven and all of his unique decor. The best thing I can say is that we will definitely be back, and we can't wait!!
This cabin is on the shore line of one of the most beautiful lakes in the country. The elevation of 1800 feet keeps it like spring in the summer. About an hour to the Smokey Mountain Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Wonderful roads to ride and explore. Motorcycle heaven. Delightful small towns to enjoy with great stores to shop. Fish in one of the many Trout Streams or drop a line in the lake. If you like to gamble there is a casino 50 minutes away just over the border in NC.
