The views of this house just can't be beat. The rooms were spacious, the pool was warm and clean, along with the house being spotless.
Great host, very attentive to our needs. Would definitely come back and recommend!
The home is as listed: 5 full bedrooms, one of which has three single beds (which can be easily moved together for a couple) and a rec room in the basement with other sleeping options. The pool is heated just enough to make it comfortable in late August when the temperature was around 62 at night but not feeling like bathwater during the day. The yard is well kept and the pool is clearly attended to regularly. The house was clean and charming. If you're looking for some sort of modern place with granite countertops and an all stainless steel kitchen then this isn't for you, but I don't know why you'd want to be in the charming area of Cornwall-on-Hudson if that's your idea of a getaway. I would have liked there to be a bit more room in the house: we slept 10, since there were five bedrooms, but aside from the bedrooms there is just the living room and the kitchen, neither of which are large. This wasn't an issue for us since the weather was fantastic, but I can imagine a party that size feeling a bit cramped if no one can go outside.
We had a one year old with us, and the house is more baby safe than most. Few sharp edges, and wires are mostly behind furniture.
I did notice that some reviews were critical of the way Susan runs her rental property. From my experience they were unfounded. She asks that recycling occurs and that reasonable measures are taken to reduce wasting energy. As far as unexpected visits from her, we had none. She had said when we booked that she would like to say hi and meet my baby boy, but she did not come over without calling both the house and my cell first to make sure it was a reasonable time to do so. That was the extent of our interaction in person for the entire four night stay.
She is right that her photos of the view do not do it justice. She should also do better to describe how easy it is to walk to the village! Many of our party did so on multiple occasions for coffee, pastries, shopping, or just to see what a slower life looks like (we all visited from NYC). One friend also came up early in the day before the 3:45 check-in and found lovely hiking trails about a 20 minute walk from the house. I couldn't be dragged from the pool myself.
Damage deposit was returned promptly and in full.
The price is high, but appropriate for the pool, the number of bedrooms, and the location: our drive back to north Brooklyn took one hour and 20 minutes! Believe me- I've checked all over homeaway and airbnb. This place is unique.
We returned again this past Thanksgiving to stay at Susan's Hudson River Home with extended family. Severe weather made our arrival a bit challenging, but we were in touch with Susan and she helped us to make good decisions for travel. She had the house warm and inviting for our arrival. Some of the improvements from last year were the gas fireplaces in both dining area and living room and the fifth bedroom. Susan leaves notes and instructions in certain areas of the home (kitchen, entry foyer, TV) which are most helpful in guiding guests to get the maximum enjoyment during their stay. Our second annual Thanksgiving on the Hudson was even better than last year. House is very comfortable and well equipped to make the stay most enjoyable for varying ages in three generations of our family. Unfortunately, some members of our family caused some minor damage. We were most grateful that Susan handled this incident in a most reasonable manner. We highly recommend this large and comfortable home for groups or families. Location is perfect for us and we cannot say enough about the beauty of the river views, equally gorgeous day or night.
Homeowner is very particular. Upon entering, there is a note to remove shoes. Then there were several notes in the kitchen about how not to break the glasses and to turn on the stove fan. In the cutlery drawer, there was a note for the count of each fork, knife and spoon.
There is a complicated process for recycling and all related to how it would cost the homeowner personally to sort. Got the impression homeowner is cost conscience, told me how much the monthly electric bill is and asked us to turn off unnecessary lights.
We had a disagreement over the damage deposit refund. I strongly recommend not sending in a full damage deposit until you arrive at the house. Insist on reviewing the house with homeowner upon arrival and departure to be sure there are no damages.
And there is a long freight train that runs along the riverfront, day and night.
There are only five bedrooms, not seven.
Beautiful house and great pool overlooking the Hudson. Kitchen could be better stocked and a clear lease would be helpful. A one week rental was six nights.
The house has a beautiful view of the Hudson and is near a lot of charming areas. The owner was helpful and unobtrusive. Easy to stay entertained both at the house and in the area.
We are in a very historic area..lots of museums to see from George Washington Headquarters to the new Purple Heart museum
very near a huge out let shopping center called Woodbury common.
