Amazing place and welcoming host

  • 5 of 5

The place delivers everything as promised. Stunning views, outstanding pool, cozy rooms.

We were 13 adults sleeping there comfortably, 3 married couples having their own rooms.

Definitely coming back again.

Amazing home- great for groups

  • 5 of 5

The views of this house just can't be beat. The rooms were spacious, the pool was warm and clean, along with the house being spotless.

Great host, very attentive to our needs. Would definitely come back and recommend!

Owner's Response: I am always happy that folks appreciate all my efforts. I have the pool water tested at least once a week to be absolutely certain the pool is clean with out being over "chemical-ed" I also double check the cleaning crews work and try hard to be available and responsive to guests needs and requests. I also appreciate it when folks are careful and respectful of this property so it is nice for the next guests.

Amazing view, secluded without being disconnected

  • 5 of 5

The home is as listed: 5 full bedrooms, one of which has three single beds (which can be easily moved together for a couple) and a rec room in the basement with other sleeping options. The pool is heated just enough to make it comfortable in late August when the temperature was around 62 at night but not feeling like bathwater during the day. The yard is well kept and the pool is clearly attended to regularly. The house was clean and charming. If you're looking for some sort of modern place with granite countertops and an all stainless steel kitchen then this isn't for you, but I don't know why you'd want to be in the charming area of Cornwall-on-Hudson if that's your idea of a getaway. I would have liked there to be a bit more room in the house: we slept 10, since there were five bedrooms, but aside from the bedrooms there is just the living room and the kitchen, neither of which are large. This wasn't an issue for us since the weather was fantastic, but I can imagine a party that size feeling a bit cramped if no one can go outside.

We had a one year old with us, and the house is more baby safe than most. Few sharp edges, and wires are mostly behind furniture.

I did notice that some reviews were critical of the way Susan runs her rental property. From my experience they were unfounded. She asks that recycling occurs and that reasonable measures are taken to reduce wasting energy. As far as unexpected visits from her, we had none. She had said when we booked that she would like to say hi and meet my baby boy, but she did not come over without calling both the house and my cell first to make sure it was a reasonable time to do so. That was the extent of our interaction in person for the entire four night stay.

She is right that her photos of the view do not do it justice. She should also do better to describe how easy it is to walk to the village! Many of our party did so on multiple occasions for coffee, pastries, shopping, or just to see what a slower life looks like (we all visited from NYC). One friend also came up early in the day before the 3:45 check-in and found lovely hiking trails about a 20 minute walk from the house. I couldn't be dragged from the pool myself.

Damage deposit was returned promptly and in full.

The price is high, but appropriate for the pool, the number of bedrooms, and the location: our drive back to north Brooklyn took one hour and 20 minutes! Believe me- I've checked all over homeaway and airbnb. This place is unique.

Return visit for Thanksgiving 2014

  • 5 of 5

We returned again this past Thanksgiving to stay at Susan's Hudson River Home with extended family. Severe weather made our arrival a bit challenging, but we were in touch with Susan and she helped us to make good decisions for travel. She had the house warm and inviting for our arrival. Some of the improvements from last year were the gas fireplaces in both dining area and living room and the fifth bedroom. Susan leaves notes and instructions in certain areas of the home (kitchen, entry foyer, TV) which are most helpful in guiding guests to get the maximum enjoyment during their stay. Our second annual Thanksgiving on the Hudson was even better than last year. House is very comfortable and well equipped to make the stay most enjoyable for varying ages in three generations of our family. Unfortunately, some members of our family caused some minor damage. We were most grateful that Susan handled this incident in a most reasonable manner. We highly recommend this large and comfortable home for groups or families. Location is perfect for us and we cannot say enough about the beauty of the river views, equally gorgeous day or night.

Nice House, issue with Homeowner

  • 1 of 5

Homeowner is very particular. Upon entering, there is a note to remove shoes. Then there were several notes in the kitchen about how not to break the glasses and to turn on the stove fan. In the cutlery drawer, there was a note for the count of each fork, knife and spoon.

There is a complicated process for recycling and all related to how it would cost the homeowner personally to sort. Got the impression homeowner is cost conscience, told me how much the monthly electric bill is and asked us to turn off unnecessary lights.

We had a disagreement over the damage deposit refund. I strongly recommend not sending in a full damage deposit until you arrive at the house. Insist on reviewing the house with homeowner upon arrival and departure to be sure there are no damages.

And there is a long freight train that runs along the riverfront, day and night.

There are only five bedrooms, not seven.

Owner's Response: I am happy to address the concerns expressed here and if you have any other questions please contact me. I have rented this home to different guests for 15 years and this is the first time any one has complained about the train. There is a commercial train, not passenger train, that runs thru this community. We are on a bluff overlooking the river. The train is 115 feet Below this property and a foot ball field away. One does hear the train for a short time once in a while ..less on weekends. The confusion in number of bed rooms is because I have not known how to count sleeping areas The recreation room is carpeted and sleeps three and can it be considered a bed room??. My response to inquires clearly states the sleeping arrangements. The four small signs in the home are to help folks know how the home works to help insure your damage deposit will be returned. For example, the sign about breaking glasses reads “ wine glasses break in dishwasher” . I thought this would be helpful to know. Of course, I am cost conscience. The less folks waste energy, by having the air conditioner on with doors and windows open and lights on when it is daylight , the more it cost me . As my cost rise so does the cost to you to rent this home. So I mention it to help all of us out. I am also very concerned about wasting our natural resources and protecting our environment. Thus I ask folks to be careful about recycling. To make it simple I have labeled the garbage pails in the garage as to how we do it in this community. This guest is complaining about the $150 I deducted from her deposit. This was necessary as there were things damaged beyond repair. I had wanted $300 but compromised to be extra fair. What I have learned from this experience is that I need to be more clear. If one rents this home for 8 to 10 people and precedes to bring in a large number of people who are staying other places in the area for a family reunion there will be an additional charge. My desire is for you to come and enjoy this wonderful home and location. All renters before this person have been very happy and many have returned .

Great location!

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful house and great pool overlooking the Hudson. Kitchen could be better stocked and a clear lease would be helpful. A one week rental was six nights.

Owner's Response: I am surprised by this review. The only items they asked for in the kitchen were many large salad bowls . I tried to satisfy them by bringing over from my home some other bowls. I have never before had guests request more kitchen items. If this person would let me know what else is needed I would be glad to buy the items. I want folks to have what they need. However I cannot have enough items when guests have lots of company that I do not expect or am not told are coming. Please see review ( below) by Lorraine Tanner who states the kitchen is well equipped for any kind of cooking.
