The Chalets of Raystown Home # 1. From the moment you arrive at The Chocolate Moose Chalet, you are surrounded by the natural mountainous beauty of the Raystown Lake area. The chalet sits on almost 6 wooded acres of private land and was built in late 2011. This wonderful HIGH END rustic getaway offers a perfect balance of peace and quiet with convenient modern amenities. The home includes custom Amish hickory cabinets, granite countertops, handmade hickory floors, as well as as knotty pine walls and ceilings throughout the entire home.
A large, inviting master suite with private bath highlights the main living area of the Chalet. A large dining area and expansive living room complete the open floor plan theme throughout the home. An upper level includes 2 full bedrooms, a full bathroom with tub/shower combo, and two additional sleeping lofts that can be converted from seating areas to 2 queen pull out sleeper sofas.
The finished lower level includes 1300 sq. ft. of finished space! Within the finished basement are 2 additional bedrooms (2 twin beds and 1 King bed), a full bathroom, and a 700 sq. ft. recreation room. The recreation room has an abundance of couches, a pull out sofa sleeper, a 55 inch flat panel TV, Blu Ray DVD player, and a card/puzzle/game table and chairs.
A relaxing covered porch overlooking the woods spans over half the home and is approximately 1200 sq. ft. Plus, the chalet now includes a wheelchair accessible ramp!
If you are looking for the perfect combination of rustic looks, sprawling size, backwoods privacy, modern amenities, and close proximity to Raystown Lake and 7 Points Marina (Beach, Aligrippis, Hiking Trails, Boating) , the Chocolate Moose Chalet is a great choice to “get back to nature in a modern way!”
My wife and I grew up in the North East part of Pennsylvania. After spending a few years in the Washington DC area during my wife's graduate schooling, we decided to relocate closer to where we grew up and chose Hershey, PA as our place to call home. We have 1 son and 1 daughter, both under age 4. We enjoy spending time at the chalet, boating, relaxing, and spending time with our children and family.
Michael & Karen Fedash purchased this chalet in 2011
The property was the perfect combination of size (6 acres), privacy, and location. Only 3 miles from Raystown Lake and 35 minutes from State College (as we are both Alumni of Penn State), along with it being only 100 miles from Hershey gave us the perfect excuse to have a second home that offered so much convenience for our activities outside of work.
The home boasts SPRAWLING size (3700 sq foot) privacy, a 1200 sq foot wrap around covered porch, along with a fire pit, and spaciousness everywhere you turn. As you sit on the porch in the evenings, with the lights turned down low on the porch, it doesnt get much better than seeing the lightning bugs flash in the woods while enjoying a glass of wine with good conversation between family and friends.
My family just spent a week in this awesome cabin. We LOVED it! It was immaculant inside and out. Having 4 bathrooms and a spacious kitchen area was a huge plus! The owner was very easy to deal with. We had four small children under 4 and they had the most fun on the porch and playing in the stone area. All of the adults also spent a lot of time relaxing on the porch as well. Raystown Lake was 7 minutes away and we enjoyed the beach area every day there. I can't recommend this place enough to everyone who is looking for a quiet, peaceful place to stay. You feel so far away from everything and yet anything you could need or want is only minutes away. We are looking forward to staying at the Chocolate Moose Chalet again.
We just spent 3 days at the Chalet celebrating my Aunt's 50th birthday. There was 13 of us, ranging in age from 70 to 15. There was plenty of room for everyone to go and do what we wanted or be altogether in same room. We loved spending time out on the deck that overlooked the woods. We got to go to 7 Points to see the lake, no swimming of course, but hopefully planning a return trip in summer so we can get to the lake and spend time on that. We had a little problem with getting access to the utility closet to turn on the water and then with the WI-FI, but Mike answered our calls right away and got everything straightened out. On the day we left, Mike even called me. Everyone had a great time, we just loved spending time together. We will be going back again.
We have just returned home from the Chocolate Moose Chalet. My siblings and our father(87years) met here for a 3 night siblings weekend (9adults). The home is beautifully maintained, with everything you need. We had brought a few of our own pots etc, just in case, but found we packed them right back into our bags. The porch is the best part of the home, you feel as if you are in the trees and we spent most of our time there. Unfortunately it was a very rainy weekend so did not get to explore the area much beyond a quick trip to the beach area on the lake. We did manage to have a fire in the fire pit every night between rain storms, there was even fire wood ready for our use! But we enjoyed ourselves just being together in this wonderful home. We all agree that this may be a repeat vacation for us in the future.
This chalet is spacious, gorgeous, spotless, comfortable, surrounded with wonderful woods. Highest recommendation. Chocolate Moose is set in a valley so there is no view other than the surrounding hills, lovely woods and a small gurgling stream. There are no other buildings nearby. Very private. We had a family reunion with 7 adults, 3 toddlers, and one baby. We enjoyed our stay there very much and may well come back next year. When we arrived the wifi internet was not working but the owner spent ample time on the phone helping to solve the problem, and after that it worked very well (I even streamed a movie). Everything is clearly labeled and explained and there are many small details that show loving care. The main room includes the large and well equipped kitchen (plenty of new cookware and appliances, not the old beaten up pans you find in some rental kitchens), dining area with large table, chairs, benches, and a living area with 5 recliners, TV, play area (children's table and chairs, toybox with lots of toys for toddlers), high cathedral ceiling, large windows looking into the forest. Lots of natural light. Downstairs is another ample livingroom with TV, couches, tables, many windows. Washer and dryer. Dish, dishwasher and laundry detergent were provided. Upstairs is a medium-sized balcony sitting area with two couches. The strong gates on the stairways were appreciated since we had toddlers. Several of our days there were rainy but the enormous wrap-around deck and ramp and large indoor spaces provided ample run-around area for our three 3-year olds. The entire building is finished (walls, ceilings) with knotty pine. The four bathroom floors are tiled. The building appeared to be new. Heating was excellent (we did not need A/C) with thermostats on each floor. We went on a tour of caves one day, and on a hike in a nearby park on another day. For people in wheelchairs, the driveway is gravel and would be difficult. We did not have access to the garage (did not need it) but wheelchair access would be much easier from within the garage. An outdoor ramp provides access to the main floor (kitchen, dining area, master bedroom, washer dryer, 2 bathrooms). By going outdoors and down the ramp you could access the downstairs area (2 bedrooms, bathroom, large living room, TV). The bathroom in the master bedroom has a wide doorway, but no handrails whatsoever and access to the toilet would be tight. Shower has wide doors and a built-in seat.
We rented the chalet for a 60th birthday celebration bringing together ages 6 months to 91 years. This place was perfect for our family! Owner was extremely helpful and informative, chalet was laid out wonderfully for the age of the people, wheel chair ramp assisted with elderly (and fun for the kids), everything you needed for a great weekend in the outdoors! The stair cases had locking safety gates which was truly a plus and the chalet was well equipped with the essentials for a fantastic weekend. Really felt like we were at home. Next time we will make it a longer stay! Hated to leave!
We really enjoyed our stay at the Chalet. It is extremely well appointed and you feel like you are staying at a good friends home. Lots of room for a large group, we had 11adults for this visit, and the recently installed wheelchair ramp was most appreciated. This is a secluded spot with a great wrap around porch and yet is close to the lake, great hiking trails as well as the stores for groceries, etc Mike the owner was very attentive and checked in with us to be sure all was well. The Chalet is beautifully built and decorated and we can`t say enough about how well thought out the design and layout are. We will be back as soon as we can to The Moose!!
The Raystown Lake region of Huntingdon County has many things to do, including State College/Penn State University, the Lake (Raystown, a 29 mile long man made lake, the largest is Pennsylvania), Altoona, and the Aligrippis Bike Trail System (now ranked #4 in the nation for mountain biking and hiking). It is 10 minutes from golf courses, 10 minutes from downtown Huntingdon for shopping, groceries, restaurants, etc., 1 hour from Blue Knob Ski Resort, and 1 hour from Beaver Stadium. 7 Points Marina at Raystown Lake is only 5 minutes from the home. It was recently voted the best marina in the United States.
