Santa Fe House Rental Photos and Description

1600 square foot Southwest Style Casa - 2 Bedrooms

Permit #: 16-00135770

Casa Viga Grande (The House-with-the-Massive-Beams) is tucked into a historically authentic and quiet neighborhood above Canyon Road --Santa Fe's prestigious art and gallery district. Winding, narrow streets are reminiscent of Old Europe.

This air-conditioned 1600 square foot Southwest Style Casa offers all the conveniences and charm of contemporary Santa Fe. The spaciousness of high, massive, viga-beam ceilings provide a counterpoint to the rich detail of decor. Everywhere, fine original art and thoughtfully placed artifacts meet the eye.

One uniquely appealing aspect of Viga Grande is the layout. Two completely separate and spacious bedroom suites each have their own private stone-tiled baths. As such, two couples find the equivalency between suites to be appealing. While one suite is more spacious internally; the other opens out onto its own private patio.

The well appointed kitchen features state-of-the-art appliances; double french doors unite the dining area with a second very private patio and gated garden.

The two bathrooms are beautiful and modern, with high-end tile and fixtures. The master bath has two sinks, a separate double-headed shower, and a large jacuzzi-style tub.

A museum-brick drive greets guests as they enter the property --which is virtually hidden behind a hand-forged iron gate. There is off-street parking for two-to-three vehicles.

Once in the famed Canyon Road gallery district of Santa Fe, the 3 minute drive (or 15 minute walk) to Viga Grande begins by following the historically soulful and nourishing Acequia Madre waterway (lovingly referred to by locals as 'The Mother Ditch') and then winding uphill through some of Santa Fe's most charming residential areas.

A free shuttle is also available on Canyon Road, making it easy to explore many other locations in Santa Fe -- including the Rail Yard District.

Our Santa Fe Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Everything at Casa Viga Grande is arranged to make one's stay comfortable and private. We enjoyed spending our vacation in a quiet, friendly neighborhood where at night we did some stargazing, and on occasion would hear coyotes in the distance. The kitchen which was well equipped, and we were thankful for the best nights' sleep on comfortable mattresses. There was plenty of bedding to keep us warm at night. We used the Acequia Madre road for access to town, which is lovely (takes about a 6 minutes' drive.) The local Kaune's grocery store is easy to find. We liked being close to Canyon Rd. also, where we had lunch at El Faro - excellent choice of tapas.

Casa Viga Grande I would highly recommend for anyone who wants Santa Fe ambience and easy access to downtown, the art galleries on Canyon Rd. and Museum Hill where there is a wonderful café.

Relaxing House - Great for Two Couples

  • 5 of 5

Case Viga Grande turned out to be an ideal house for us--two couples. The kitchen, living, and dining areas are large and inviting and very nicely decorated. I thought it looked even nicer than the pictures. With the kitchen, dining, and living areas open to each other, the house seems very spacious and light-filled.

The two bedrooms each have their pluses—the master bedroom is larger with a bathroom adjoining it but has a queen-sized bed. The second bedroom is smaller but has a king-sized bed. The bedrooms have a hallway between them, so you feel some privacy. You can close a door in the hallway so the second bathroom almost becomes an “adjoining” bathroom to the second bedroom. The second bathroom can also be accessed from the living room.

We were glad to have our GPS to help us find the house. I highly recommend having a car if you stay here—it’s down a long narrow dirt road, and it may be hard for cabs or Uber drivers to find it. From a map, I thought we could walk to Canyon Road (it looks close on the map), but I changed my mind when we got there. We did enjoy coming back to the house after a day of touring—it’s isolated and quiet since it’s at the end of a dead-end road. This house is in the back of another house—in fact, we knocked on the door of the house in front first. The house is close to Museum Hill—only about a 5-minute drive from the house. We did drive to the square several times for touring and for dinner and didn’t find it that hard to find a parking place, and we were there the five days before the Albuquerque Balloon Festival.

Two other couples came over for dinner one night—the dining table comfortably seats eight with two chairs brought in from the bedrooms. The kitchen was amply stocked with dishes and utensils, and even a few spices and olive oil. My husband used the gas grill and said it worked well. We shopped at Whole Foods and Kaune's Neighborhood Market to get breakfast supplies and makings for one dinner.

We enjoyed the Museum of International Folk Art--highly recommend timing your visit for a docent tour or you'll be overwhelmed. I also recommend having lunch at the restaurant on Museum Hill. Our favorite restaurant during our stay was Cafe Pasqual's, but do make a reservation in advance.

Great for Pair of Couples

  • 5 of 5

This place was clean, comfortable, attractive and almost totally quiet (when pulling into the driveway, the neighbor's dogs would declare their presence). The house was situated on a lovely, traditional, dead end Santa Fe dirt street with lots of privacy and a pleasant, shaded patio with a dining area and a fire pit. It seemed recently built and freshly furnished. The gated driveway fit two cars, so meeting another couple here worked out perfectly.

One warning: look out for the end of the driveway gate latch because it is at head height and, though the tip is wrapped in red tape, it is surprisingly easy to miss as it swings into your face!

Owner's Response: Hi Daniel, Thanks so much for a wonderful review and I am certain it will assist future guests in their decision regarding Casa Viga Grande. One note, I had a welder come by the home yesterday and move that gate latch down to a safe level. Thank you for pointing it out to us. All the best, Richard

Very nice house

  • 5 of 5

Our family of two adults, two kids stayed 3 nights in this house in August. It was one of the nicest properties we've ever rented and would happily rent it again. The location is a little obscure in a older neighborhood of Adobe houses. The streets are narrow, windy and a little rocky. The house itself is beautiful inside with a gorgeous kitchen that is fully stocked with nice dishes, cooking tools and cookware. The furniture was high quality and in new condition. The bathrooms were superb. There is a large driveway to park in. There is a gas fire pit outside that we, unfortunately, didn't have time to use. Overall, a great experience.

Comfortable, beautiful, clean, quiet - a lovely place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We prefer a property that is a bit out of the way of the normal hustle and bustle of tourists. This property is a 10 min walk (up and down a steep hill) to canyon road - and then another 30 min walk to the main square - but we enjoyed the walk each and every time...but you need to be fit to stay here if walking.

The kitchen is big, well stocked with dishes, pots and pans - all other parts of the house are lovely. The main bedroom and bathroom are beautiful and comfortable. We have rented this house on two separate occasions, once in winter and once in summer and have thoroughly enjoyed both stays.
