About the property

Mountain bikers, hikers, outdoor lovers, this is the house for you!

Situated on 1.3 acres of land on top of a mesa in Apple Valley, Utah (4400 feet above sea level), the Gooseberry Mesa lodge is a private, comfortable and relaxing getaway with a view that will keep you coming back. The main house has 3 bedrooms and sleeps 6 comfortably, while the detached studio apartment above the garage has a king size bed to accommodate 2 more.

The main house includes a kitchen with stainless steel appliances including refrigerator, electric stove and oven, dishwasher, microwave oven, coffee maker, toaster, a complete set of pots and pans and dishes. There is a counter, bar with stools so your guests may watch you cook while they sit and chat and a large dinner table that sits 6-8. Eat dinner with family and friends while enjoying the view of the mountains. After dinner sit in the living area while watching television, or unwind in front of the fireplace during a cold winter night, or get together with your family and friends for a board game night. Or if you prefer to barbeque outdoors on the porch and later gather around a 'campfire' for some story telling and toast marshmallows instead.

The laundry closet stores a full washer and dryer. All three rooms in the main house have sliding doors that lead out to the enclosed garden where you can relax and watch the kids play in the little playhouse.

About Nik

We love to spend most of our 'free' time hiking, exploring and mountain biking. We frequently escape to our 'Utah' house with our two kids for peace and quiet, and to enjoy outdoor activities this area has to offer. We would love to share this experience with you too.

Nik purchased this house in 2011

Why Nik chose Utah

We fell in love with the panoramic view of Zion NP and surrounding mountains during the day, and at night the sky is an endless blanket of stars.

What makes this house unique

Having lived in big cities all our lives, my husband and I love the peace and quiet this house offers and it's closeness to many National Parks.

Car: necessary

Gooseberry Mesa Lodge is a quiet, comfortable and relaxing getaway with panoramic views of Zion National Park, Gooseberry Mesa and the Smithsonian Butte. Far away from the crowd, you can watch wildlife from the porch, star gaze at night or build a fire and toast marshmallows with the kids.

This is a great location for family getaways and adventurers seeking a central base to explore the surrounding National Parks such as Zion, Bryce, North Rim of the Grand Canyon and Lake Powell, all within a day trip away. Many state parks and recreation areas are also close by. We are also within the immediate vicinity to world-class mountain biking trail systems such as Gooseberry Mesa, Little Creek Mesa and the JEM/Hurricane Rim Trails.

For the adventurous soul, head down the Smithsonian Butte Country Byway in your 4WD. Smithsonian Butte Back Country Byway is only 1.5 miles from the lodge and travels for 9 miles between Apple Valley on State Route 59 to Rockville on State Route 9. As the route winds down into the Valley of the Virgin River, you'll experience views of Zion Canyon, Canaan Mountain, the Vermillion Cliffs, and Zion National Park just four miles west. As you reach the highest points on the Byway, Zion's fiery landscaping, filled with buttes and temples, lays in panoramic glory at your feet.

Very authentic and comfortable home with wonderful views.

  • 5 of 5

Gooseberry Mesa Lodge was a wonderful place for our family of 8 to spend a week as base camp. We were able to drive into Zion easily only 35 minute ride, 2 to 3 hours to both North Rim Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon which out west is comparable to 40 minute ride back east. Also worth noting that these rides are beautiful.

The best part about this house is after amazing Sights all day you come home to a very well appointed, comfortable, adobe home with continuity of beautiful views. I will absolutely stay here again if we return. Thank you Nick and Barry for sharing your home with us.

Even better in person

  • 5 of 5

The panoramic view is even more impressive in person and the area is quiet at night. The house was great - very clean, comfortable beds, spacious kitchen/dining/living area, decent kitchenware, good dining patio furniture. Entire stay was as good or better than we had hoped for. Thank you.

Very nice place with great views and quiet relaxation.

  • 5 of 5

This is a nice house with very nice southwest decor and lots of amenities. Located in a small village on a mesa. Good access to Zion and to Bryce and the Grand Canyon for day trips. A bout a 20 minute drive to restaurants and groceries but we enjoyed breakfast and dinner on the patio. Great star gazing.

A fantastic peaceful location

  • 5 of 5

We had the best time ever at Gooseberry Lodge! Everything was fantastic and as described. If you manage to go during the "monsoon" season as we did, you get the benefit of seeing storm clouds sweep in through the canyons and over the mesas. Unforgettable!
