Great little house

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed this cottage very much, it was so charming. It had everything we needed and wanted. Love that Hagar beach is a 2 minute drive and St Joseph is 10 minutes away. Wish there was a larger grill but other than that it was great! Hope to return next year.

Great Place to Stay On Vacation

  • 5 of 5

This place wass an excellent choice for a family of four. The cottage was nice, clean, and also private. Perfect for someone looking to get away. Would definitely rent this place again. Owner is nice and informative.

A nice find

  • 5 of 5

I’m really glad we chose this cottage. The owner was really easy to work with, and was able to answer my questions in a quick and informative manner. It was great being so close to the beach. The cottage itself is very nice and clean. We were tired one night and enjoyed being able to relax and watch baseball on the nice hd tv. There’s plenty to do nearby, and we also loved the deck. We would definitely go back next year, maybe even later this summer if I can get off.

Just what we wanted!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the cottage. From the quiet location, to the cozy feel, and the peaceful deck, we had a relaxing time. It was easy to get to two beaches nearby, and just a ten minute drive to St Joseph. We felt like we were really getting away from things, but with lots of options to get several towns in a short time.

We especially liked Coloma, and discovered the Loma Theatre, what a deal Five bucks or so for a new movie and popcorn!!! I’d definitely recommend it, especially to families with small children, as it is on the small size. However, it’s great to get out and do things with the kids, and maybe wear them out too, as there are lots of family things to do nearby.

Great Family Place

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time over Memorial Day at the cottage. It was just as advertised. I was especially happy with the extra touches, like plenty of pots and pans, matching dishes, and flatware. There were also spices, and other things you might need to cook with like aluminum foil, that I’ve always had to go out and get at other rentals.

The cottage was clean, and felt homey. The furniture was surprisingly nice, and again, not run down like other places we’ve stayed. While small, it was a great for our small family, (two and five year old). We enjoyed sitting out on the deck and enjoying the woods view. It was so peaceful. There is lots to do nearby, as it is close to St Joseph, South Haven, and Coloma. It gave us a lot of options for activities and dinner. We’re coming back for the Fall to do some apple picking. My only regret is that we couldn’t access the cool retro trailer in the back, maybe next time.

Very disappointing

  • 2 of 5

There are some things we wish we had known as it would have made a difference to us.

First thing we saw was an enormous hole in the neighbor's yard and large piles of excavated dirt. Because the deck is on the side of the house, the view is pretty much the construction site -- as well as the woods. At 7:00 a.m. the earth movers started about 10 yards outside the bedroom window. Would hope rental property owners would be able to alert guests to major construction in the area, but you may want to ask.

Couple of feet outside the living room window is an old trailer. The owner later indicated surprise that we would mind it, saying his kids play in there. We did wonder though, since it’s viewed by the owner as a positive aspect of the property, why there is no mention of it on the listing or a photo of it.

A few feet from the side of the house is a 2-3' cinder block wall where the neighbor’s property starts. In plain view were various projects large and small with parts, tools, tarps, etc. in great abundance in their yard.

The house itself is pretty much as pictured inside; small and worn, but clean. Bedroom is smaller than photo indicates There are matchstick blinds which don’t prevent people from being able to see in at night.

The neighborhood is a hodge podge. Lots of rustic (nicest way to say it) homes with stuff in the yards, and some nicer, more kept-up places. A Google Earth search will allow you to see the area of this rental. (Though we found it decidedly less appealing than even Google Earth shows.) The following point is no fault of the owner, but on Google Earth it looks like the house is about 20 yards from the street when in reality it’s about 6 feet from the dirt road. You can see the next door neighbor’s tarps and such on Google Earth and that stuff is much closer to this home than it appears on Google Earth.

Note the lack of reviews. We should have. Definitely not worth the price to us. We ended up staying in a lovely place in South Haven just a few minutes from the beach and paid the same price. In the middle of the activity but not noisy. This rental is about 20 minutes from South Haven.

We asked him to consider a partial refund and received less than one night's rental back though we only stayed one of the three nights. It was our choice to leave and stay elsewhere but if the property had been accurately portrayed, we never would have rented it in the first place. Caveat emptor!!

Owner's Response: To begin I would like to point out that VRBO’s policy gives me one option, pay the negative reviewer what they want to remove the review, or suffer whatever they post. I paid already, (while under no obligation), I said it would be small and why. He was paid nearly a nights rent when the deduction from the credit card (which he said he wasn’t going to use) is considered. The check was cashed without complaint. He had over a month prior to his rental to ask about whatever he saw on Google Earth, or anything else. I have to presume that people contact me after they have considered their budget, desires and requirements. I can’t help it that his budget doesn’t match his aspirations. I don’t want anyone in my house that doesn’t want to be there; especially if they feel they’ve not gotten what they expected. We are proud of our cottage and feel strongly it offers a great value. Finally, I was notified by text that he’d left, leaving me no option to find out what was happening. As I told this renter, I have no control over what my neighbors do. That house has sat vacant for over 5 years. It appears the owners started a 2 day project to add a foundation for an addition. Definitely bad luck, and a near one in a million chance for this renter to encounter, but again, something completely out of my control. I had no idea this was going to happen. I also wouldn’t categorize it as “major construction”. They did have to level the ground, and I’m sure it was noisy, especially early in the morning, but the end result was a small cinder block foundation, the “enormous hole” and “large piles of excavated dirt” were soon gone. I had someone go out there the next day, and the work was finished. There is a smaller, vintage trailer/camper tucked behind the house. In four years of renting, no one has ever complained. It’s is hard to see from many angles in the living room. I don’t have a picture of it on the listing because it is not available to renters. I may make it so soon. I do view it as a “positive aspect “of the property and am a little surprised someone could get so bent out of shape about it. In addition, there’s also a security aspect to not showing the trailer, as it could possibly reveal the location of my property. I most strongly disagree that my house is worn. Judge for yourself from the pictures, they are current. It is made quite clear to all in pictures, descriptions and in conversation, that it

It's only a short walk to a beautiful beach where you can walk for miles. Conveniently located between the charming beach towns of St. Joseph and South Haven, Michigan. Lots to do nearby. Close to restaurants, golf, hiking, apple picking, and much more. Enjoy cottage living in a quiet, country, setting. Relax on the deck and enjoy the wooded view.

There's lots of events in both St Joseph and South Haven throughout the summer and fall. There are also some winter festivals, so don't miss the year round fun. Load up on fresh fruit and vegetables throughout the area. See a first run movie at the local theater for $5 including popcorn and a large drink. A five minute drive to Harbor Shores Golf course and several others. Lots of great hiking nearby or out the door.

Close to Chicago, but feels far away. Plenty to do rain or shine.
