The artists' house...Relaxing, light simple yet comfortable holiday house with pool, not an agriturismo, - the house is completely for your enjoyment , Wifi , huge terrace, overlooking medieval town of Poppi, situated to east of Florence , and 35 minutes from Arezzo, easy reach of Cortona, Siena and sea, with excellent opportunities for sightseeing.
The house sits on its own little hill down a small track from the village, (passing umbrella pines and a good place to pick blackberries!)
The air of the Casentino is very clean - the house is on the edge of the National park and so one can drive up the mountain on a hot day for a cool walk among the chestnuts, followed by a panini or even hot chocolate in Camaldoli.
The house is easy to relax in, it has dining inside and out, with different sized tables set around the lavender lined terrace, pool and garden so you can choose to sit in the sun or under the vine clad pergolas .
The pool is 7x3 metres and overlooks the whole valley. The terrace behind it is a good place for yoga and meditation or for just sitting with a glass of wine after a day's sightseeing.
There are beds for sunbathing, and a barbecue ( the local Chianina beef is available , as well as ready made local meals, are available at the wonderful butcher in the piazza , and lasagna etc can be made to order ).
There is a tiny field with goal posts for playing football or pop up tennis, plus ping pong in the shade of a massive oak tree. A yoga teacher can be supplied by request.
There is also swimming in the River Arno or for serious swimmer, and Olympic sized pool in Bibbiena.
Poppi is a collonaded town with a Castle built as a model for the Uffizzi in Firenze. There are 9 other castles in the area to explore. Poppi has a variety of shops and has a market on Tuesday's when everyone comes in to town for a gossip. There is a great icecream cafe on the piazza for watching the world go by! There are also good delicatessens selling local produce and organic vegetables etc .Apart from horse riding, cycling and, for the brave, a flight over the valley in a microlight, there is also a fabulous golf course behind Poppi ( see Golf Casentino)
Local Tuscan specialities served at a variety of local retaurants allow one to have a relaxing and entertaining break. There is a restaurant within a few minutes of the house selling well cooked meals from pizza and pasta to steak etc. Good for children as well!
Catered meals and a taxi service can be supplied on request.Bus and trains to Firenze and Arezzo.
During the colder months, board games, good supply of books, DVDs, wood fires. In spring birdwatching (46 varieties of bird listed in one week) with occasional visits to the fields by wild boar and deer. Nightingales fireflies, shooting stars golden oriel and hoopoes can make for a magical experience. Cherries, plums, figs. walnuts in season are pickable.
Christmas New Year and the winter.
The house is not for the fainthearted in winter! It is stone built, has 2 fires and bathroom heating, plus electric blankets and hot water bottles. We have made the prices low because you will have to heat the house up which takes about a day. Bedrooms are cold. Logs can be ordered either through us or through the wood man. It is also possible that you might be snowed in or have to leave your car at the end of the drive. Otherwise its very romantic!
Winter or summer you leave feeling refreshed!
Artists froom the area - pierro della Francesco, della Robbia, the Bibiena brothers, Dante... George Elliot visited and trekked from Poppi to Camalodoli...
Fairs and festivals all summer.
Learn Italian, learn to make pasta, attend wine tastings..
Email from a guest while staying..
" Thank you for letting us know about the market, which we will visit. We are feeling just marvellous and really enjoying your beautiful house.
The kitchen stove is fantastic and all your odds and ends make for a very comfortable and attractive house....I spotted a number of deer early yesterday morning in the field just below the house. I am having a day here on my own, to which I look forward - the other 2 couples have arranged to have a game of golf. We had an excellent meal at the Restaurant near the roundabout last night and plan to visit the Frog Festa on the 31st. Yesterday we went to the Antique Market in Stia and picked up a few lovely things -
The paintings in the bedroom downstairs where I am sleeping, I love! "
It's an artists' house, sitting on its own little hill and with a huge protective oak by its side. When we first had it there were chickens, rabbits and doves living in the ground floor, and we camped for years with just basic furniture and relying on fruit from the trees and an ancient vegetable garden, particularly as there was no road at first, and the track we made to the house was undrivable if it rained or as happened one year, when it turned from hot and sunny to a blizzard and 2 feet of snow the next day (Christmas Day!) . The children love it, it's great way to have a real family holiday, and because it's not touristy it's easy to settle into an Italian way of life. Theres a nice organic fresh vegetable farm shop across the field ( past the goat family) , its close to Poppi but feels completely secluded, and if you have a dog, its a long way to run and find a road. The nearest road is a track to the village.
Fresh air beautiful unspoilt view, hot and sunny in summer, snowy and like something out of a Breugel painting, magical events like a field of fireflies, lots of nightingales, close to a town and all the amenities yet away from it all. Unpolluted view, huge skies. Beautiful summer and winter. Easy striking distance of many major cities. Good place to unwind and remember what it's like to do things together.
We are safely back in rainy Finland. I'll be glad to recommend Casa Feriale. We miss the place!
Hopefully we'll have an opportunity to stay there again!
Find attached a happy memory. Our little guy Voitto.
we stayed in this amazing house for five nights on our honeymoon. it was perfect, the location and the surrounds are breathtaking and we had a fantastic time. Watching the fireflys at night was magical and i would love to come back in the middle of summer. Deborah was a lovely host.
Very enjoyable stay with everything made better by Samuele's assistance. Lovely terrace on which to eat and relax with fireflies to watch after dark and boars snuffling below in the dusk. Comfortable rooms and all facilities. Surroundings and views superb. And much else to see in the area.
Casa Poppi is a spacious house set in a field with a terrace that dominates the town of Poppi and the tuscan hills beyond. The interior has real personality, lovely paintings, comfortable and elegant furniture, functional kitchen and comfy beds which immediately made us feel we had found somewhere special.
Whether inside by the fire place (in early October the nights can get chilly) or under the vine shaded south facing terrace outside, we felt able to relax and enjoy the countryside.
Poppi is a castle town with great food shops and a weekly market. We visited Florence (where we landed), Arrezo and Sienna which are all within an hour or so of the house and went mushroom picking in the nearby forest to cook delicious tagliatelli al fungi.
This is a great family house in a superb setting. Thank you
At the beginning of this April we stayed at Casa Feriale for a week with 5 adults and 3 children. We had nothing but sun and had a brilliant time in Poppi and surroundings! The house caters for all needs; its very spacious, fantastic views, plenty to do for kids (games and DVD's galore). Spent most of our days sun lounging on the patio (has sun from sunrise to sunset!) and exploring the region (Poppi, Arrezo, Florence).
We had BBQ's most nights but also had dinner in some of the local restaurants which are great! Not an overly touristy area but that just added to the charm. Highly recommended!
We had a great relaxing stay at casa Feriale during the las week of October 2010. It was such a nice relaxing stay. Our kids (1, 3 and 6) loved the house and all the DVDs and games. They also loved exploring outside and playing with the outdoor toys. The area is very relaxing. It's not overly touristy, which was a nice change with some good restaurants. Overall we had a great stry, our eldest son still talks about the vacation and asks when we can go back!
We had a wonderful autumn break in Casa Feriale, great walks, amazing views and lovely log fires. The house is beautiful, simple and well equipped and makes you feel you have really got away from it all. We returned home feeling great and really want to go back again. The owner was lovely and very helpful, the place was clean and full of beautiful objects and paintings. We would definitely recommend it.
Off the beaten track, in a quiet valley close to Florence but overlooked by the casual tourist , due to the lack of motorway, the town of Poppi commands a central positiion in the Casentino ( the “enclosed valley”), where Dante Alighieri lived wrote and fought . Poppi Castello holds an impressive collection of 25,000 books and manuscripts as well as a description of the battle between the Guelfs and the Ghibelines. Walk up the colonnaded streets to the Castle and sit at the bar overlooking the whole valley. Ancient castles and churches and monasteries including , St Eremo and La Verna ( St Francis of Assiss lived here) are worth visiting. In the sweet chestnut forests of Camaldoli one can buy local monastery honey and soap and walk in the cool fresh air of the National Forest. Golf in Poppi, antique fairs in Arezzo and small village celebrations and fireworks all summer in the valley. Visit works by Perro della Francesca,Vasari, Della Robbia, spend a hot day in Firenxze and recover with a swim in the Arno, or at home in the pool, or go for a ride ,a bike ride , hire a Vespa, or just try the local produce and wine. Numerous festivals take place throughout the summer in the valley including the famous Moggiona Festa in mid August.
