Martin or Jill Whalen purchased this house in 2012
We bought Anchors Away after searching up and down the coast for a waterfront home close to the ocean yet secluded enough to avoid crowds. We have vacationed in New Bern for many years and are entranced by it's unique blend of southern charm, natural wonder, and historical significance.
We fell hard for Anchors Away the moment we opened the front door and could see boats from the entryway. In this busy world there is serenity, comfort, and calm that comes from slowing down, unwinding, and enjoying the water.
We stayed here at the end of September and celebrated my birthday. Had the kids come stay as well. We all enjoyed the beautiful home on a quiet cove (Anchor Cove) in River Bend, NC. The location was great and close enough to go to New Bern for dinner celebration and grocery stores, etc. were also close by. We used the marina at River Bend to launch the boat and were able to dock the boat at the house. The kids used the kayaks and there is a very nice launch for those at the dock as well. Ample parking at the house for a couple of cars and a truck and boat trailer. Martin was wonderful to work with and was in touch with us upon arrival to make sure everything was good when we arrived. I would definitely recommend this home to my friends and family and we will certainly be going back again.
During a stressful weekend helping a family member, this home was an oasis. Marty was very kind and easy to work with and the house is beautiful. We highly recommend it!
Me and my family stayed here in January 2015. We got a phone call 1/14/15 that our father passed away in a car accident with no hesitation we drove all the way from Washington state to New Bern, NC. Once we got close we had to find somewhere to stay with 6 of us we knew it would be expensive and difficult. We came accross this home and thought it was too good to be true. I called and spoke to Martin and he was such a "breath of fresh air" during a really hard time. He made things so easy and simple for us. The home was beautiful and in great condition. Me and my sisters were just so grateful to have found this home and wanted to say Thank you to Martin for his understanding and cooperation.
This home is lovely and the owner is extremely helpful and pleasant to deal with. The view is excellent and the house comes equipped with plenty of items for outdoor fun - fishing equipment, kayak, canoe, bicycles. My grandchildren had a ball on the water! The house is comfortable and spacious. There is lots of space for dining with seating for 6 in the kitchen and 8 in the dining room and lots of dishes and flatware. The sun porch and living room with its beautiful bay window are lovely and a wonderful place to sit and read and enjoy the view. I would definitely come back and I would recommend it to my friends and family.
Our family thoroughly enjoyed Anchors Away over the Christmas holiday - it is absolutely amazing!! The home is comfortable and spacious. The view is wonderful. The amenities are outstanding - bikes, kayaks, canoe, fishing equipment, large deck and dock with built in benches..... the weather was unseasonably warm and we took advantage of it and used everything! We all absolutely loved it - we have 2 teenagers and our extended family who lives in River Bend - we all wanted to move in. Also - the location on a quiet cul-de-sac was so nice. Saw deer in the evenings in the cul-de-sac and the kids were able to bike around the area with little traffic. Anchors Away is set in a very nice neighborhood - close to the water and the golf course. The large kitchen has a table to sit 6 and the beautiful dining room seats 8. The sun room is a wonderful spot to enjoy watching the sunset and the boats on the water. Owners Marty and Jill are super. Overall - an amazing stay at Anchors Away!! 5+ Stars
We rented Anchors Away to be near New Bern for a family wedding. This house was the perfect escape from all the wedding chaos cause by the possible hurricane Joaquin. AA was roomy and tucked away in a quiet, lush neighborhood. Now it did rain the entire trip and there was a little concern about flooding but was still a lovely stay. The house was just the right size with all the luxuries right at your fingertips. We were close enough to be in Downtown New Bern within 15 minutes and far enough away to feel like you were at your own private lake house. We saw lots of wild life and the fish were enjoying all the rain. The house was a great size with more than enough space for all us, the bedrooms were all rather spacious, then the kitchen with dining space was more than ample, also the full dining was great with a lovely view of the lake. The TV room has some of the most comfortable couches, then there is the sun room with walls full of windows to take in the lovely landscape, and lastly there was the den area with a gorgeous bay window that looked out onto the deck and the lake. We had some watching TV in one room, another reading in the den and even someone napping on the couch without there being any disturbance from the TV noise. Anchors Away was just the right place for us to ease the stress of the wedding and enjoy our time in North Carolina.
Thanks for a lovely stay and outstanding house.
