About Chris Booth
I'm an INDUSTRIAL DESIGNER living in Valencia, Spain, and married to my Spanish wife, Garbiñe. I was born in Northern Ireland in the 60s. To escape 'the troubles' my parents took the family to the USA then returned to England and settled there. It was a huge adventure for a 10 year old to go to the USA and to school in Philadelphia and then in Dallas. After that the family settled in ‘the Midlands’ in the picturesque town of Malvern, Worcestershire. At university I studied ‘European Business Studies’, which included an academic year in Clermont-Ferrand in central France, and finished with a 2:1 B.A. My year in France left me fearless of working ‘in Europe’, and also of learning languages, and over the next years my jobs were many and varied, including working: i) valuing investment funds in Paris, ii) selling real estate between Villajoyosa and Moraira (Costa Blanca, Spain), iii) in a 5 star hotel in the ski resort of Saas-Fee, Switzerland iv) in the British Pavilion at the ‘Seville 1992 World Exposition’ ( ‘Expo ‘92’), v) in Barcelona managing a small ‘Industrial Rope Access’ team. After all that adventure I could speak 4 languages and had wide-ranging work experience, but nevertheless decided to study Industrial Design, and to do so returned to the UK where I got a 1st Class B.Sc degree in Industrial Design after 3 year’s study. That led mainly to employment in engineering firms in the car industry, and to long-term and short-term projects ‘in Europe’ – a few years at Ford, Köln, Germany and a few years at Ford, Valencia, Spain – but also time at Jaguar in the UK and at Nedcar in the Netherlands. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VDL_Nedcar ). Employers include Comau (https://www.comau.com/en ) and Icemi (https://www.icemi.com/es/ ), and responsibilities include mechanical design and project management. I do however also have experience in furniture design and a particular interest in solid wood, which I am sure you will appreciate in the decoration in the house.
Chris Booth purchased this House in 1985
Why Chris Booth chose Villajoyosa
I first came to Villajoyosa Old Town for a long rest after finishing working in Paris. The contrast in lifestyle between valuing investment funds Monday to Friday in the financial district in Paris and relaxing in Villajoyosa was huge. I was smitten! I bought this house even though I could not live here permanently at the time. Spain became my favourite country and as you can see in the section above, I have constantly returned to Spain. I remember when I finished my 2nd Winter in the ski resort of Saas-Fee and for a change I specifically looked for work in Spain and found it in the British pavillion at the World Epo '92, in Seville. On another occasion I specifically wanted to live and work in Barcelona, and did so for several years. And years later when an engineering project finished at Ford Valencia and Comau wanted me to return to the UK that I preferred to remain in Valencia, where I settled and married my Spanish wife, Garbiñe. So I've lived in the south in Seville, the north in Barcelona, and settled in the middle in Valencia – this is where I want to be and I've made a lot of effort to be able to settle here permanently. This house is the first property I bought and I've been lucky enough to not have to ever sell it, but instead be able to renovate it completely so I can enjoy it with my wife when its not being enjoyed by guests. As a designer, I have revelled in being able to choose my favourite traditional elements – colourful geometric floor tiles and old wood on view in doors and ceiling beams – and mix in modern creature comforts – modern kitchens and bathrooms that complement the traditional. All done to a quality that my wife and I would be prepared to live in ourselves – and which is a cut above the typical level of decoration for holiday rental accommodation. Living nearby and speaking the language also has significant benefits for managing the property in general and specifically for being able to get anything sorted for guests if required.
What makes this House unique
The vast majority of houses in Villajoyosa are very 'vertical' – typically only 30 – 40 square metres per floor but three or four floors. That means that typically you need to go up and down stairs quite a lot. But we have been lucky enough to buy 2 neighbouring 'vertical' houses and make an extensive reform affecting both of them so that now both of them have a more or less open plan space on a single floor that contains living room / dining room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. How was this possible? Well if we call the houses Nº10 and Nº12, we did the following: At ground floor level we gave most of the ground floor of Nº10 to Nº12 by replacing the wall between them with steel beams at ceiling level and making a new separation leaving only the entrance and staircase at ground floor level in Nº10. This created the double-sized open plan ground floor in Nº12. On the first floor we left everything as it was – each house has a bedroom and bathroom on the first floor. On the second floor we gave all of Nº12 to Nº10, again creating a double-sized open plan space with living room / dining room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom on one level. In both properties this larger space on one level is much more comfortable to use and enjoy than having two smaller spaces separated by stairs. Even when just sitting there – .e.g. in the living room or the bedroom, the sense of space is much more pleasant and the eye can rest on e.g. a picture on a wall a long way away. This house is Nº10, and has the inconvenience when coming and going that the main living space is on the second floor – every time you come into the house you have to go up two floors of stairs to get to the main open plan living space – but on the other hand the advantage is that you then have great views from the balcony down to the sea and from the window to the church square, and with just one more flight of stairs you're on the roof terrace, with its all round views.

Stunning house, designed to reflect local culture!
Perfect location for a relaxing holiday, amazing coastline with a pleasant walk from the house to the beautiful beach. The sea is an amazing experience even at the end of September. There are nice resturants nearby, the local population is lively. Chris is a helpful host starting with ensuring you arrive easily at the house to make for the start of a straight forward holiday! Basic household items are available for use on arrival and we replaced anything we finished, plus the washing machine is great for a lighter suitcase! The house really looks like the pictures and we would definitely recommend as a little special and good value for a relaxing holiday!
Lovely Rental by the Sea
We were "two ladies who lunch" on holiday who basically wanted to lie in the sun, relax, eat good food and drink wine!
This house is in a great location in a quiet part of The Old Town but within a few minutes of the beaches and bars. Good to find a property with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Lovely roof terrace ideal for breakfast and pre-dinner drinks in the sunshine - with superb views of the sea.
Absolutely loved Villajoyosa - Beautiful well kept beach, the people are friendly, the food in the restaurants is very good - recommend "Menu Del Dia" at Restaurante Sant Pere - although this will probably be followed by a siesta!!
If you go to Mercadona the supermarket try the gorgeous coffee and cakes in the coffee shop across the road - they have a great selection and the service is very good.
Excellent communication and customer service skills from Chris the owner who was always on hand if there was a problem
Yes I would certainly recommend this property to my friends.
Hasta Luego Villajoyosa it was a pleasure staying in your beautiful sunny climate :-)
Casa Santa Marta, Vilajosa.
Had a great stay, house in a perfect location, facilities good, very clean, the owner was very good, could not fault the whole service, and would recommend the property.Plenty of bars and restaurants in the area, and good links by bus or trains,on the whole very good.
There are indeed very good links by bus and train. Many people find the train more appropriate for visiting nearby towns during their holidays - the train route is more scenic than the road route the bus takes and the train itself feels more comfortable and spacious than the bus. In Villajoyosa the train station is about 5 minutes on foot from 'Casa Santa Marta', and without any hills to go up or down to get there.
The train service stops at a multitude of destinations between Alicante at one end of the line and Denia at the other. All in all, between the train service and the bus service there's really no need to rent a car unless you specifically want to visit places that can't be reached by bus or train - it's even possible to get from Alicant airport to Villajoyosa on a combination of bus and train, although most people organise an airport pick-up or taxi.
Full detals fo the train service can be found at http://www.tramalicante.es/page.php
Perfect house and location
The house is in a great location and Villajoyosa is a really nice place to spend time. The old town is lovely and adjacent to the beautiful beach, so just a couple of minutes walk from the house.
The house itself really lacks nothing and the second floor especially is positively stunning. Really spacious, with beautiful floor tiles throughout and a marble wet room; all topped off with a roof terrace with not one, but two, sea views. The ground and first floors (second bedroom and bathroom) are very neat and tidy although not yet renovated to the standard of the second floor and roof terrace.
Although I didn't meet Chris in person he has been very attentive and his neighbours very kind and friendly. Wouldn't hesitate to pay another visit!
We do try to be as attentive and as helpful as possible to our clients, and we do actually have a plan for some improvements to the ground and first floors that will hopefully be carried out before Summer 2014. That said, the current level of decoration hasn't stopped most clients from awarding 5 stars overall!
casa santa marta holiday home
We stayed in the house with some friends for a week in July. The house is lovely, exactly as described. All the facilities you need with a lovely roof terrace. Two minutes walk through the old town to a great beach with some very good beachfront restaurants and bars. Many thanks to Chris the owner for waiting all day for us to arrive after an 8 hour flight delay and greeting us with a bottle of wine!
my holiday in Casa Santa Marta
I've just finished to spend my 15 days of holiday in Villajoyosa, everithing has been perfect. the house we rented was perfect!!! From the top of the terrace we used to have our breakfast, lunch and dinner...and we really enjoed eat with the breeze and the sea as panorama....
The house is perfectly described fro the picture and it is supplied of all!!! Is at 2 minutes walk from the beach, 5 minutes walk from Mercadona and 2 minutes walk from Chocolate factory Valor....really good eat wit churros!!! My holyday has been Excellent thanks to the beautifull beach, sea, weather and lest but not last beautifull house we rent to spend it!!
The house - 'Casa Santa Marta' - is near the centre of the old town of Villajoyosa. A plaque above the door commemorates the fact that during the civil war the owner very bravely (apparently risking her life) hid the small statue of the town's religious patron 'Santa Marta' in the house to save it from damage. Even today, during the fiestas in the last week of July, there are some processions past the house and the locals stop and bow their heads in memory of this.
The church square is very close, as is the well that was the source of water when under siege - the street name 'Calle del Pozo' ('Carrer del Pou' in the local language) means 'Well Street'. There are good shops, a permanent fruit/veg/meat market and a very good supermarket all only about a five minute walk away.
The nearby beach and front (2 min walk) was fully refurbished in 2010, making Villajoyosa a very pleasant family destination.
