Montemor-o-Novo Chateau / Country House Rental Photos and Description

Spacious and elegant country house sleeping up to 12 in 6 bedrooms -priv pool.

Passareiro is a truly beautiful and much loved historic home with an authentic feel of times gone by.

Elegant and informal, this large whitewashed home extends over one level, with long vine-shaded terraces running along the length of the bedrooms and living areas. Antiques and rustic pieces are scattered throughout, adding to the rich sense of character and history of the house. There are lovely gardens and an outdoor dining area to totally relax in well as a spacious living room, dining room (both with giant fireplaces) games room and study inside.

Set two minutes from the house, the stunning pool is fed by a natural stream and is a great favourite with all our guests. It is the perfect place to totally unwind and enjoy the prefect views over vines and citrus groves. At night, eat out under the stars by lamplight and if you like, spot the constellations in the incredible night sky with our telescope.

GREAT LOCATION - Remote yet totally acessible

Passareiro is within easy reach of Lisbon (about 1hr), Sintra and the coast by motorway so you can easily get do a day trip and have the best of both worlds! You will need to rent a car to get around and explore the area, although most find their good intentions evaporate once they get near the pool!

There is plenty to do in the area. The Alentejo is extremely beautiful and you will be in the heart of its stunning landscapes and rural pace of life. Nearby is the famous town of Evora - a Unesco World Heritage jewel, with a splendid Roman temple and Roman remains  which can be seen throughout the whitewashed cobbled streets. There is also a range of great restaurants and wineries in town as well as closer to home.

You will  also be welcome to walk on the estate and soak in the beautiful scenery of ancient cork forests and vineyards. There are some great spots for picnics and if you are lucky you might spot eagles and other bird life. We are located within a Natura 2000 area for natural biodiversity and wildlife and actively participate in local conservation schemes.

EXCELLENT SERVICE - self catering at its best - and you can cheat if you want to!

Most of our guests book Passareiro on a self catering basis, but it's worth remembering that even as such, we offer a very high level of service. As described below, maid service is included in your stay but in fact you can have as much service as you like.

Sandra our housekeeper will be there every (bar Sundays) to do a general tidy up throughout the house and pool, replenish the wood (or coal for the bbq in summer) and make your bed made for you. She can also be booked for extra hours to help in the kitchen to prepare meals or babysit if you want to go out. We find this option takes the pain out of catering for large groups without adding too much to the cost.

For those who really don't want to lift a finger, we work with a great private chef  who can be booked for you during your stay, or to arrange a special meal. He can also give informal cooking classes in the kitchen for those who are interested.

Simple home cooked meals on arrival are also available, arranged in advance.

About Joanna Mollet

This is a photo of our family (well almost all of us!) watching the cork strip in late July this year. The Alentejo's beautiful oak forests produce most of the world's cork and stripping is a fascinating process, done entirely by hand by local workers using skills that haven't changed for hundreds of years. We love walking out into the forest and watching them work. It's just one of the things that makes Passareiro special for us as a family, aside from the main house and the world's most relaxing pool, we love the space one has to roam and the sense that here, time stands still.

Joanna Mollet purchased this chateau / country house in 1905

Why Joanna Mollet chose Montemor-o-Novo

Passareiro has been in our family for 5 generations and so there's a rich sense of tradition about the place. It's been a favourite spot for our family to get together and enjoy the company of friends in a totally relaxed atmosphere for over 100 years.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Our aim is to provide top notch accommodation with total privacy and a great level of service. Our house is beautiful in an understated, simple way and extremely comfortable. There's plenty of space to stretch out here, take a book to a quiet corner of the garden, explore the vineyards or soak up the last golden rays at the pool.

We want guests to relax and enjoy Passareiro for what it is and not have to worry about cooking and cleaning, it's a holiday after all! Although most people do like to cook for themselves, we've designed our service to be flexible to your wishes and budget. You can have as much or as little help as you like and we are happy to discuss what works best for you.

Passareiro is so much more than a gorgeous house, it's the feeling that once you arrive, you seem to leave the world behind you.

Guestbook comments from the owner

simply stunning

  • 5 of 5

I didn't think it was possible for Passareiro to be more impressive in real life than it is in the photographs but it is. The bedrooms are all well appointed and gorgeous. The dining room is like something out of Downton Abbey and the outdoor eating area is just the perfect place to relax. Then there's the pool. What a hidden gem. We spent countless hours out there enjoying the wonderful Portuguese sunshine. On top of this fabulous house, the owner, Joana, is super organised and helpful. She was a great resource when I wanted to put together a wine tour of the region, helping me find and communicate with vineyards, organise transport and many other things. The staff onsite are also very friendly. At the last minute the maid, Sandra, looked after our dog so we could spend the day in Lisbon, they made sure the fridge was stocked with everything we needed and kept the place tidy. Overall a fabulous holiday was had at Passareiro.

Quiet, peaceful, wonderful family venue

  • 5 of 5

This was our second trip., having visited last summer. Visited with family, 4 young children. Wonderful place to do very little! Evora is nearby, and good to visit for an evening or two.

Beautiful traditional farm house with unique pool

  • 5 of 5

The house is large and spacious and very well maintained. Sandra, the maid, is very helpful and efficient. We loved our time at Passarreiro and this was our third time. I would recommend the house to freinds.

I would not recommend the restaurant in Escourval - the food had clearly been frozen and thir was very little atmosphere.

A uniquely beautiful house in Portugal's Alentejo

  • 5 of 5

This uniquely beautiful and relaxing farmhouse in Portugal's peaceful Alentejo is one of the most amazing places I have ever stayed in. Despite the fact it's little over an hour from Lisbon, which makes it really easy to get to, this old farmhouse is tucked away down a dusty track and feels like another world. I felt truly able to switch off. It's set in acres of ancient cork woodland, which makes the whole thing feel magical, while rambling gardens, olive groves, vines - and the odd sheep! - add to the charm of the place. The whole thing is peaceful and private. You practically feel like you own the place! The (medium-sized) pool is fed by a natural stream, but still feels as chic as any you'd get in a modern villa, with a gazebo area and lots of comfy loungers. And the house itself is the perfect mix of authentic beauty and charm, plus comfort. Not every room has a shower, but we were there with friends and we took turns to use the shower in the 'blue room'. The beds are large and comfortable with the requisite white sheets and towels and a maid cleans up every morning, so by the time you get back from the pool, beds are made, breakfast is cleared away and the place is looking tidy. The kitchen is very well equipped and makes cooking a pleasure - there's plenty of room for everyone to be chatting, chopping and making cocktails together and we only fought over whether we were going to eat outside on the pretty terrace or in the lovely big dining room. Days slipped by quickly and we could easily have stayed put the whole week, but there is a surprising amount to do in the region. We drove 40 minutes to an amazing restaurant near the Spanish border, bought rugs in a beautiful old hilltop town and had breakfast at the market in Evora. There's also a an excellent riding school about 25 minutes drive away, which we went to twice. The local village was a hit with the boys, as they could play football there in the early evening, followed by a beer in the local bar. There's one of those fab, really big supermarkets about 15 minutes away and it was fun to go there and stock up on everything from inflatable pool toys to olive oil. And of course everything is so much cheaper than in the UK. We filled a huge trolley for just over €100. We also had beautiful weather - it was sunny and hot the whole time. But it's a really pleasant heat - comfortable, never stifling. All in all, a really special place and a truly relaxing holiday. Highly recommended.

Beautiful, peaceful, unique.

  • 5 of 5

A group of seven adults with five toddlers spent a memorable new year's at Passareiro.

The house and property are beautiful and full of character, accommodation is of very high standard and customer service is friendly and of equally high standard.

The surrounding area is serenely picturesque and full of historical, gastronomic and cultural interest; the Alentejo is a sort of low-key, undiscovered Tuscany.

We loved our stay and thoroughly recommend Passareiro.
