Newly remodeled bathroom. New floor and fixtures.
We had a wonderful time at the house. The house is small as we knew coming in but became smaller when 2 more family members came making a total of 6 people. The cottage has a very open floor plan. Only the downstairs bedroom has a door while the upstairs 2 sleeping areas are open to the livingroom below. One area has a twin bed and bunk beds and the other has a double bed with a wall dividing the 2 areas. Just pointed this out because the pictures and description of the place didn t really explain this very well. The sandy beach in front of the house is great for playing and taking a stroll. Overall a great place for a family with younger children.
The location was perfect and the beach was phenomenal. The house itself is fairly small but my friends and I spent a lot of time either outside or in downtown Sturgeon Bay. The bathroom could use some updating. Overall, I would try it again next summer!
The cottage was exactly as advertised. My only concern was the road in front of it was busier than I had expected. We had dogs & kids who ran back and forth from the beach and cottage & from the beach there's kind of a blind spot so you definitely have to look. However, that was our problem really, as the description clearly says there is a a small road. We just expected it to be less travelled & for the cars to be going slower for some reason. It was unseasonably cool, which was a shame, but you can't control the weather! I would have liked a washer and dryer, but there's really no room and we fared just fine. Overall, the cottage was exactly as advertised, loved the stairway railing, kids loved the loft area, and it was clean. Everything worked just fine. There was a bottle of wine welcoming us, which was a nice touch. It was great having the beach right there & also being close enough to town to get provisions. Great little cottage that I would recommend to anyone - but I realized that with 4 teens & 2 dogs, we'll probably need a bigger place next time.
This was a lovely area, but the cottage fell short of our expectations.
When we arrived, there was supposed to be a futon or pull out couch and there was not, so we went and bought an air mattress for one of our guests to sleep on. After feedback to the owner, the description has now been changed on this website from Sleeps 8 to Sleeps 7.
I was the person that complained about the hot water. Glad to help. The bathroom was supposed to be remodeled during the off season and it was not. That was disappointing. The bathroom is S-M…ALL. The shower is in poor condition as other people have noted. I am a big guy. Big guys and small bathrooms are not a good marriage. But it’s better than an outhouse.
We really felt the cottage was not cleaned very well. The linens seemed old and smelly. I was told these were new linens? When we took the cushions off the couch to see if it was a pullout there were sunflower seeds and crumbs under the cushions. The floor underneath the dining table was not swept as I was sweeping up food that we never brought the next morning. The large coffee maker was stained black, so it was too gross for us to use it.
The beach didn’t exactly look like the beach in picture #7. It was really the main reason we were there. It was mostly covered with branches, brush, etc. We spent a couple hours cleaning it up so that we could have a general area to hang out down by the water. Once it was done and it looked much more like the neighboring properties, hanging out by the fire pit area and the beach down by the water was terrific. They only have a groundskeeper who manages the lawn, flowers etc., but not the beach. They do not provide wood. You either collect it from the forest or you get your own from a local gas station.
In summary, if you can get past the bathroom issue, you’re there for the beach and to enjoy Door County. If the owners would have had a futon/pull out couch in place as advertised and the bathroom redone like they had advertised in their past feedback, we wouldn’t have been as irked as we were. All in all, the quality time with the family down on the waterfront was tremendous. I feel the beach and waterfront get 4 out of 5 stars while the cottage gets 2 out of 5 stars. If you want to get to this beach bad enough, and don't mind finding a 2 week old french fry in a random place, choose the cottage next door (same owner, 4 bed/ 2 bath). They have excellent bathrooms! :)
The views of Lake Michigan from this property were breathtaking and almost made us forget that the cottage had some major drawbacks:
1) The bathroom was terrible. We could deal with the small size (less than 25 sq ft) but the mold in the shower was not desirable. We also did not have hot water for 24 hrs. Thankfully another renter had complained about the water and the maintenance man came out to fix it. Had he not, we were seriously considering leaving.
2) This cottage only has 1 true bedroom. The upstairs loft was divided by a partition to make two spaces. I would not recommend this setup/location if you have small children - the loft made it nearly impossible to be in the large living space once the kids went to bed because we had to be careful to not wake the babies.
3) The fireplace was a huge draw for us and it did not work well - the smoke was not being properly drawn into the chimney and as a result the whole house was consumed with smoke. The smoke smell lingered all week.
On a positive note, the living space was open and made it easy for our family of four to play.
This was a great location and great for a young family. The kids loved the sand and the yard to play in. The size was perfect for 3 young kids. The house was on a quiet street. The cottage had all the basic supplies needed for the week.
This is in the heart of beautiful DOOR COUNTY! Tons to do, festivals, fishing, triathlons, wine tastings theater, art music, and a GREAT beach out your front door.
