Villa Caribe is a beautiful colonial house with modern touches throughout, situated in one of the most desirable areas in the historical centre of Merida. A pleasant three-block stroll takes you to the popular Santiago square, where Tuesday nights are alive with big band music and dancing under the stars, and only a short walk away takes you to the beating heart of colonial Merida: Plaza Grande, Merida’s main square where you can take in all the cultural activities.

This historical home of Villa Caribe sitting on a rare bus-free block in Merida boasts a large array of features. The 1,800 square foot Colonial has been lovingly restored to its former glory but with all the modern amenities you could want, including air conditioning in every room! With open concept living/dining and gourmet kitchen area; 16 foot ceilings with original wood beams and custom made pasta tile floors, this floor plan is perfect for entertaining. Make dinner in the gourmet kitchen and enjoy it in cool comfort while sitting at the dining table with views to the pool and tropical garden, or dine alfresco in the large covered outdoor dining area next to the pool. Every detail has been thought of at Villa Caribe including adding ceiling fans to the covered terrace so on those nights with no breeze, you can create your own and dine in comfort.

Wake up in your luxurious king size bed in the master bedroom and watch the hummingbirds feeding on the sweet nectar of the tropical plants or just gaze out at the blue water of the infinity edge pool. The master bedroom includes a walk-in closet and a oversized master bathroom with double vanity and a large shower.

After a long day of taking in the sites, head back to the Villa for a dip in the pool or maybe just gently sway in your hammocks in the quiet tropical garden.

After dinner retire to the den and watch a movie or kick back and read a book. Villa Caribe is the perfect home away from home, and has everything you need for the perfect holiday. Enjoy!

About Anna Gove

Anna and Alan realized their dream of buying and remodelling a colonial home in Mexico, in the beautiful city of Merida. Their connection to Mexico goes back through fifteen years of travel to the Yucatan, and they were married on the beach in Playa del Carmen. They first encountered Merida on vacation in 2004, and knew right away that it would be part of their lives for a long time.

Anna is a designer and decorator, and her passion and keen eye is reflected in every aspect of Villa Caribe's design. They are both passionate about culture and cultural travel, and are happy to share their experiences in helping you plan your Mexican vacation, and give you all the inside scoop on the colonial gem that is the city of Merida.

Anna Gove purchased this house in 2010

Why Anna Gove chose Merida

The city of Merida is one of the most vibrant and fascinating cities in Mexico, and the historical centre brims with life and culture. Villa Caribe is situated in one of the best locations in Centro, only a short stroll from some of the city's main attractions.

What makes this house unique

Importantly, Villa Caribe sits on a rare, bus-free street, assuring quiet days and nights free of buses outside your door. There's nothing like swaying in your hammock in the back garden of Villa Caribe, or swimming in the pool, surrounded by exotic tropical vegetation.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Sanctuary in Merida"

I had the pleasure of staying at Villa Caribe for 23 days in February 2013, with spouse, niece, nephew and a girlfriend coming and going during that time.

The house was very well situated; in the very authentic Santiago neighborhood with an easy 1/2 mile or so walk to Merida's central plaza or easy to flag a cab on nearby Calle 59 to anywhere.

The décor and floor plan of the house are perfect for relaxing: stylish but practical, peaceful and beautiful. The stunning, very private (we rarely heard noise from neighbors), walled back garden area with pool was the most popular feature of the house (we were all Seattleites so a pool is a treat) but the large, modern, high-ceilinged kitchen within the open concept design was also a hit.

I was particularly fond of the view of the back garden from the spacious beautiful master bedroom each morning, sometimes watching hummingbirds in the flamingo bush.

The house is well designed for adults since the master bedroom is separate from the remainder of the house with a private entrance from the side yard.

The information regarding Merida provided at the house was very good, but even better, the owner, Anna, was available continuously by email and provided great suggestions for activities as well as managing a few tweaks needed at the house.

Probably the unexpected bonus of the stay was anna's recommended guide/driver Polo Garcia. We initially arranged for Polo to drive us from Chichen Itza to the house, but then took advantage of his warm personality, great English and wonderful suggestions, for excursions to Progreso, Lol-tun and Uxmal, a working hacienda and Celestun and for shuttling our guests back and forth from the airport.

We hope to return to Villa Caribe.

A great location. Close to the Centro, lovely pool, beautiful rooms and decor. We really enjoyed our stay. If you are looking for time in Merida, this is a short walk to everything downtown.

Villa Caribe

  • 5 of 5

I had seen this property last year and knew this was the perfect place for my 2017 Merida stay. The neighborhood, with its close proximity (3 blocks) to The Santiago Mercado is a favorite of mine and I could easily walk the 8 blocks or so to the main centro, although taxis are inexpensive and always available.

The house was perfect for me, traveling alone. Waking up in the master bedroom with the view of the pool and the lovely garden was a daily treat. The bed was comfy, the bathroom extra clean and generously sized and I felt completely safe sleeping with the doors open and the night air cooling the room through the screens.

The kitchen is well outfitted and I was supplied with plenty of fresh water in the large jugs customary to Merida. The house is just as lovely as the pictures depict, with a comfy living room and a smaller guest bedroom should you need it. In my opinion, this is the perfect house for 2 people sharing a trip or a couple who wants privacy, luxury and a lovely respite from the midday heat in their own pool.

Merida itself has a wide range of food and shopping as well as day trips to nearby cenotes, ruins and beaches. The museums are plentiful and cultural options abound. This is a city to love and Villa Caribe made it all the better.

Villa Caribe was Perfect

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this property for 2 weeks in Jan/Feb 2017. It was as advertised and exactly what we were looking for. Our positive experience started pre-arrival in our dealings with Anna. Like others have described, she was beyond helpful and gave us tips to make our arrival very easy. We could just tell, based on her responsiveness, that we would have little to worry about with the quality of the property.

This place is an oasis that is a treat to return to each day or to stay put in for the entire day luxuriating. Not that there is a frenzy beyond the doors of Villa Caribe. There isn't and that's because it is situated on a relatively quiet street. One certainly hears some traffic out there but none, not one, of those ear-plugging diesel-belching buses that make parts of Merida so real. Somehow Calle 63 between Calles 76 and 74, where Villa Caribe is situated, has been spared from that. The kitchen is a centrepiece and very well equipped.

When we first arrived and headed out for a walk we were immediately concerned that we were poorly situated and too far removed from the action. Not so. What seemed on day one like way too long a walk to Plaza Grande or Parque Santa Lucia became almost nothing after day two. Every night after dinner we would take a 20 minute stroll to Hola for some lovely ice cream. But what made this location perfect was its proximity to Parque de Santiago with its Mercado Municipal #2 and the variety of food and drink offered at the various loncherias there. What a gem! And soooo close. In a matter of a few days we had found our favourite fruit/veg and chicken vendor who would each greet us with a knowing smile. The lady at the tortilleria came to know that I only wanted a laughably tiny 5 pesos worth of those steaming hot tortillas which would last us for the day. We found lots of nearby restaurants and delightful coffee places. We will let you discover those or use Anna's tips. Our two day rental car was safely parked at the front door each night with no problem.

Okay...the mosquitoes. Who likes repellent? Not us, so for the first few days which were coolish days, we didn't sit out because the mozzies would find us from noon on. We were quite disappointed and let Anna know and wondered if there was a regular program of spraying to keep them at bay. She followed up to make sure nothing had been missed, the pool boy arrived the following day and from that day on we had no problem and never used repellent.

Peaceful escape in the heart of Merida

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here with my husband and daughter and all I can say is wow. As we walked in for the first time we all gasped. You wouldn't know what a beautiful and huge house was behind the front door. It is even more beautiful than the pictures, if that's even possible. It is well within walking distance to the center of Merida, where we found numerous things to do. The yard gets plenty of sun during the day. Would definitely recommend!

What a respite!

  • 5 of 5

Villa Caribe is a hidden gem! Close to Centro, yet far enough away to feel like you're in a 'local' neighbourhood. The open flow, the volumes of the rooms, the coolness (both in temperature and decor) of the spaces were among the things we loved. Visiting cats walk stealthily along the garden wall, hummingbirds 'squawk' (the first I've ever heard), and the flight path and chirps of the birds are hidden treasures at the back of the house by the pool.

And to reinforce the need for mosquito repellent -- these are not "Canadian" mosquitoes, those of the big, noisy, divebomber variety; these are stealth mosquitoes -- tiny, quiet, all but invisible. You don't know they've gotten you until they've gotten you - wear the repellent in the late afternoon.

This little house was such a breath of fresh air! Modernly redecorated, yet designed with a Mexican feel. So close to the city center, yet far enough away to enjoy quiet and privacy. The courtyard and patio area, with the pool, is as refreshing in person as it looks in the pictures. Loved our stay at Villa Caribe and hope to return again.
