Waterfront Island Beach Home with Beautiful Sunset

Bedrooms 4
Property type house
Minimum Stay 4 - 6 nights

About the property

The Lil House is a four bedroom, three bath, house on stilts with a porch all the way around allowing for a breeze at anytime of the day or night. It has the best view of the sunset on Dauphin Island allowing for memorable front porch memories. The sandy yard with seawall just feet from the porch allows for the best of both island worlds--sand fun for the kids, and boat access for the sports enthusiast. The fishing from seawall/boardwalk is great both day and night. Dolphins are frequent visitors at Lil House and can often be seen swimming in front of the house. So whether you are a family with small children, or snowbirds looking for tranquility, or a fishing afficienado, the Lil House is for you!

About Susan Carley

I am a 49 year old mother of two middle schoolers living in Mobile, Alabama with my husband, Kevin. I own a coffee shop in the historic part of town called Cream & Sugar Café. We live just a short 35 minute drive from the island where we love ALL water sports and just watching the sunsets and dolphins....that never gets old!

Susan Carley purchased this house in 1974

Why Susan Carley chose Dauphin Island

My grandmother, Lil, built this beautiful island house in the early 70's and I grew up coming to the house every summer with my six cousins and two siblings. We have fond memories of running the seawall chasing porpoises, fishing morning and night, and crabbing with chicken bones with my grandmother. Now my children run the seawalls, catch our dinner, and swim in the very water that we did as children.

What makes this house unique

My uncle designed the house to be like a steamboat with a porch 'deck' all the way around the house, doors in every room that open out onto the 'deck', and water views from every window. The front porch with swing and rocking chairs offers the best sunset view on the island. It also sits so close to the seawall that the adults can sit in the shade (of upstairs or downstairs deck) and watch the kids as they swim, ski, or kayak in front of the house. Because the house is situated on a cul-de-sac, the children can ride their bikes and play safely with other neighborhood kids. The house faces the Mississippi Sound allowing for good fishing and boat access, but is directly across the street from Lafitte Bay which is a no wake zone and allows for great, safe place for kayaking or swimming. The house is just a short two block walk from the Gulf front beaches which gives you the option of a day at the beach or a day of watersports. The kids will also love sandcrabbing on the beach at night!

The downstairs bunkroom is not suitable for small children since you must go outside and down the stairs (albeit covered) to access the room. But this room is a perfect 'get away' for teens with its sofa, TV and play station. The deck downstairs gets a nice breeze since the house is on stilts. There is covered seating and open deck area both adjacent to the sandy yard where the kids play and the boardwalk-covered seawall where someone is always fishing. There is a bike trail that extends from one end of the island to the other and several bike rental companies on the island. There is a sea lab and estuarium that is open to the public seven days a week. Its very educational and a new shark and stingray tanks allows for petting. There is a bird sanctuary on the island with a beautiful boardwalk leading through the piney area of the island to a secluded beach. Because the house has plenty of beds but limited living space area, for your comfort, we request no more than 10 guests.

Charming beach cottage with THE most incredible view

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a wonderful stay at this house. I grew up on Dauphin Island and have to say that this location has one of the most incredible sunset views I have ever seen. This cottage is so full of character- from the vintage wood floors, to the ample farmhouse table, to the white slipcover couches. Susan has a very thoughtful eye for relaxed and beautiful beach decor. The downstairs area was perfect for our teenagers. We spent our days kayaking and paddle boarding, fishing right off the dock, biking to the Lighthouse Bakery(a must do- but get there early!), beach combing for shells, and mostly just sitting on the porch swing gazing at that incredible view. We were lucky to see dolphins every single day- and one day, they played in front of the house for hours(long enough to hop in the kayaks and paddle around with them). A few other must do's-- a visit to the Estuarium, a ride on the ferry (weather permitting), take out steamed spicy shrimp from Skinners, bike ride to the Audubon Bird Sanctuary. This location truly has the best of all the island has to offer. Thank you so much, Susan, for sharing it with us!

Charming beachhouse with absolutely breathtaking sunsets!

  • 5 of 5

This property has awesome views of the water and the sunsets are gorgeous! My grandsons and nephew did a lot of fishing. This was a great spot for fishing and of course playing in the water. We got to watch the dolphins play a few times and other wildlife as well. We went to the West end beach a few times and went shelling. We actually went walking on the beach every day and had a great time. We really enjoyed sitting on the swings and chilling out on the deck at the house. Thank you Susan for sharing your home with us!

Great time in your Lagoon Beach House!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a great time here and the beach house itself was a big part of it. As it should be we really did not spend much time inside of it but what time was spent inside was enjoyable. The set up with the teen room really helps having electric & a bathroom downstairs since most of our time there was on the dock, in the sand or on the kayaks provided. Almost every basic essential was provided. For tenants I suggest if your stay is as enjoyable as ours and there is a basic item that is not there already there, buy it and leave it for your next trip as we did. For instance, one basic item (for my wife) that was not there was a hair dryer, we bought one and left it. We definitely plan on returning to the same beach house again! Loved it and did not want to leave!!!

One of a kind house

  • 5 of 5

My family and I visited Lil House for the first time for spring break, and we will definitely be back in the future! The house is absolutely adorable and well-organized, it is stocked with thoughtful extras like a Keurig and a traditional coffee maker, laundry detergent, cooking suppies, cleaning supplies, and games. Our teen girls loved having their own "apartment" downstairs", and the adults enjoyed the cozy, warm furnishings of the main level. Now on to the views and outdoor spaces! The sunsets are to die for, and several mornings, we had coffee on the porch while watching a SeaWorld like dolphin show right off the seawall! Even watching storms roll in was high entertainment. We enjoyed hanging out at the house as well as making the short walk to the beach, and we didn't even get around to the extra activities that Dauphin Island offers. Neighbors were sweet, and our favorite restaurants were Pirates Pleasure and Dority's. Susan was very responsive to questions that we had, and the house was very clean upon arrival. Visit her cafe, Cream and Sugar, in Mobile while you are in the area; cake balls!!!! Thanks for a wonderful trip!
