This home holds volumes of precious family memories. All of us have special times here with our individual families, extended families, and friends. 'Girls week' at Christmas and in the summer draws 3 generations of moms-daughters-cousins for boating, hiking, cooking and general relaxing together. Couples weekends are also a treat as we frequently entertain friends for an activity and a meal.
Louann Kohlbeck purchased this house in 1993
Our parents attended The Leelanau School (near The Homestead in Glen Arbor) in the 1940's when Leelanau County was a remote and hidden jewel. As our family grew up we visited Glen Arbor for vacations and then attended camp at Leelanau-Kohahna now located on Pyramid Point - just down the shore. The county has been 'second home' for three generations now but remains 'first' in our hearts. Our home on 'Big Blue' is a true retreat where peace and tranquility abides. For those of us who enjoy 'garden therapy' we have a large and lovely place to commune with the soil and flowering plants. Our home is located on a certified 'Natural Beauty Road' just a 2-mile walk from a favorite local bar & grill on M-22 - the now famous state highway that winds its way around the perimeter of Leelanau County. Mom and Dad fell in love with this place because it was a bit off the beaten track of the tourist crowd which tends to stay closer to the National Park, and it offered a peaceful and quiet retreat.
The unique architectural design of this home combined with the sense of seclusion yet convenient distance from both Northport and Leland (10 mins either direction) make this place perfect for extended stays. It is a family home - not just a typical vacation rental property - and offers the comforts and conveniences of a year-round home. Come and enjoy!
It is so hard to sum up our incredible adventure in a few paragraphs - the property and home are absolutely beautiful; rich wood accents and pleasant soft lighting throughout with all the amenities you would expect in your own house. Rooms are well sized and comfortable - I slept great every night with the windows open, allowing the cool breeze and sounds of lake Michigan to ease me into sleep.
Even with my family of four (with two young children), my sister and her husband felt as if they had their own separate suite - we really appreciated how roomy and well laid out the floor plan was. And the amazing views of of the lake Michigan sunset every night were stunning - something you just can't see on the bay side.
The feeling of solitude we enjoyed all week was exactly what my family and I needed. While normally I am the first to get up early and plan the local adventure, I was the one saying "let's just stay here - it doesn't get any better than this". Our family spent most of the days in the lake - battling the waves on our inflatable "ship", searching for Petosky stones on the private beach and dining afterward outside on the amazing deck. We grilled almost every night but also ate at a delightful restaurant down the road close enough to ride our bikes to (yes, there are bikes available here to use)!
We simply made amazing memories here that we will never forget. Very highly recommended as a family retreat!
Our family of 6, ages 10-85, loved this home on the Leelanau Penninsula. The sunsets were spectacular.
The path to the lake was easily navigated by our 85-yr-old matron of the family.
The cove, though rocky & sometimes sea-weedy, was great for floating and kayaking. We enjoyed the north country for exploring, hiking, wine tasting, farm stands, bicycle riding, berry picking, pottery galleries and more.
The house is very well appointed & comfortable. The kitchen is totally equipped for cooking all types of meals, we even had relatives over and served dinner for 10. Both towns of Leland and Northport were great for quick runs for supplies, or enjoying the shops & restaurants. Roxanne's shop in Leland, The Cove Restaurant in Leland & Barb's Bakery in Northport were our favorites. Thank you Louann for a wonderful time in your lovely home. We'll never forget it!
My family found this beautiful home relaxing and very peaceful. It felt remote - truly a 'retreat'. The house very comfortably accommodated me and my husband, my dad, three daughters (two college-age and one seven year old), and two cousins. We read, swam, relaxed by the dock, made nightly s'mores by a bonfire, and enjoyed the STUNNING view from the deck. The kitchen had everything we needed, including a gas grill and washer/dryer.
We found something to do every day, including golfing, hikes in nearby Leelanau State Park, kayaking down the Crystal river, and running through the Sleeping Bear dunes. We found a great bookstore in Northport.
The swimming is a bit rocky, I recommend bringing water shoes and inner-tubes to float. There are lots of opportunities to bike. You can rent kayaks in Northport and have them delivered to the house.
After a week in this beautiful 'retreat' it was very hard to come home to reality.
We spent a wonderful week with our family, including a three-year-old and a one-year-old. Spending quality time with adult children and grandchildren is priceless. Doing it in this beautiful home made our time together even more special. The house was perfect for our family. The one-year-old learned to climb the stairs by the end of the week! We loved walking on Gills Pier Road in the mornings, tooling around Lake Michigan, afternoons at the family friendly public beach in Northport, eating at The Happy Hour Tavern and the Garage, visiting the Grand Traverse lighthouse, then watching spectacular sunsets in the evenings. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home.
My family, seven adults, stayed for a week and had a wonderful time. We enjoyed coffee on the dock in the morning, sun on the dock or deck midday, happy hour on the deck and a fire on the beach in the evening. Every aspect of the house allows for a relaxing environment.
We took day trips into Leland, Northport and Glen Arbor. Dinner at The Cove in Leland and at restaurant (forget the name of it) at the end of Gill Pier was very good.
Our family had a fantastic time and wouldn't hesitate to come back
We thoroughly enjoyed our vacation in beautiful Michigan. This home is just that - a home. Rather than feeling like I was staying at just another rental home, I felt like I had been invited to stay at a friend's home. It was so welcoming. I cannot begin to describe the sense of peace gathered here when in the home and on the property. The pictures truly do not do justice to the "real thing." The view from the great room is absolutely breathtaking. The owner was wonderful and very accessible. Our teenagers thoroughly enjoyed the home. They had a blast setting up their hammocks in the trees near the lake. I wish I could go back today!!
