Welcome to Bob & Jeanne's Northwoods Retreat on beautiful Little Spider Lake! Located in world renown, Vilas County Wisconsin, we are in the Northern Highlands American Legion State Forest, just 4 miles north of Minocqua/Woodruff. A 3 hour, 20 minute ride from Madison, 4:30 from Milwaukee or Minneapolis and about 5 hours from the northwest suburbs of Chicago.
The Minocqua/Woodruff/Arbor Vitae area is beautiful all 4 seasons and boasts incredible natural resources, including 2,300 freshwater lakes (the highest concentration in the world), 850,000 acres of state and national forest land, 68 hiking/snowmobile trails covering over 600 miles and 23 'Great Wisconsin Birding' trails. The area was also declared '1 of the 25 coolest Midwest Lake Vacation Spots' by Midwest Living Magazine and was selected as the '5th Best Fishing Town in America' by Field & Stream Magazine. If you can't find something to do here....you really aren't trying very hard! You can do everything or just kick back and relax...and that's one of the best reasons to visit Bob & Jeanne's Northwoods Retreat!
Bob & Jeanne's Northwoods retreat offers 1500 sq. ft. of space, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and sleeps 8 people. There's a big stone fireplace in the living room, a huge sunroom facing the lake with fantastic western views, and a newly remodeled kitchen with new stove, fridge, microwave and dishwasher, solid countertops and hardwood cabinets. All kitchen utensils, bowls, blender, coffee maker, toaster etc is included. Washer and dryer are downstairs and we just added a screened in porch just off the campfire pit. When you first walk in the house, you are going to be impressed...not just with the property, but by how clean everything is! Master bedroom has a king bed and adjoining bath with shower. Second bedroom has twin/double bunk bed, third bedroom has twin/twin bunk and a seperate twin bed. Across the paved driveway is a basketball hoop by the 2+ car garage with foosball table and plenty of storage for your car, boat and gear. The property sits on 2 acres with mature oak, pine, maple and birch and includes over 100 feet of sand and small rocks frontage. The beach is accessed by a newly built 60 step staircase with an 8' x 12' deck halfway down; an excellent place to while away the evening hours! We groom the shoreline regularly to provide above average swimming for young and old alike. The water is very clean and clear and we have a gently sloping swimming area that gets about 1 foot deeper every 10 feet that you move out. Little Spider Lake is a great fishing lake and relatively quiet with a population of eagles, loons and blue herons. Although there are quite a few properties on the lake, many are seasonal and aren't always occupied. Also, Bob and Jeanne's Northwoods Retreat faces an undeveloped state owned shoreline. In addition, there is less than average traffic from non-residents on the lake so sitting out on either of the two decks on the lake side or the private dock is very quiet and relaxing. The vista overlooking the length of the lake is a view that memories are made of!!
Jeanne and I are here to make sure your visit is comfortable, relaxing and fun and we will do our best to make sure that when you need to leave, you will be looking forward to coming back to visit us again!
Jeanne and I have owned property in the Wisconsin Northwoods since 1992. When I was a kid, my family came up north to vacation and eventually built a cabin on Diamond Lake, just 6 miles north of our Northwoods Retreat. My Dad used to call it 'North of the Tension Line'! We raised our family in the Madison area and whenever we found time between basketball, swimming and football games, we'd head 'Up North'!! I can't imagine not spending time up here. Now, we're semi-retired and want to share our version of fun, comfort and relaxation with you, your friends and family. We do our best to make sure you're happy and comfortable. We do things most other folks either can't or won't. We'll call you when we go into town to see if you need a gallon of milk or a dozen night crawlers. Need a canoe or a kayak for a day? Forget your PFD? Need a babysitter at the last minute? We're here to make sure you make memories to bring back home with you.
Bob or Jeanne Weske purchased this cabin in 2012
We looked for about 5 years for a place we could rent out and eventually have for our 3 kids. As soon as we saw this property we knew it was the one! This place is in a great location in the State Forest and is surrounded by lakes and rivers and yet, it's only 4 miles from town with great dining, shopping and amenities. Of all the places we've travelled, we always came back to the Minocqua/Woodruff/Arbor Vitae area. There's just so much to do here! All 4 seasons are unique and offer different activities and if you just want to relax, it's quiet and comfortable.
Walk down the driveway in the morning, turn right and enjoy breakfast at The Northern Cafe. If you turn left and go about 100 yards you're at Marty's Place North for dinner. You can enjoy miles and miles of paved or natural bike paths, some right out your back door. Fish from your private dock for Smallies, Walleyes, Musky, Northern, Crappie and Panfish or put your boat in one of literally HUNDREDS of lakes within 20 miles. Enjoy swimming, boating and some of the most spectacular sunsets you'll ever see right off your deck over Little Spider Lake. As the waning sunlight fades, crack open a cold one and enjoy an evening campfire outside or a cracklin' fire in the hearth inside!
Our family of 4 recently concluded a month long rental in August 2014 at Bob and Jeanne’s cabin. Bob and Jeanne are gracious hosts. Both greeted us on our arrival and made effort to connect with us periodically during our time at the cabin.
Long-time visitors to the Northwoods of Wisconsin, we could not have been more happy with our experience here. The cabin was perfectly appointed with plenty of room to accommodate our family, plus several members of our extended family who visited us periodically during our rental. With its knotted pine interior and big stone fireplace, the house has that perfect Northwoods feel. The glass sided deck and huge windows provide outstanding views of the lake and the undeveloped state forest on the opposite shore. From the flagstone patio (complete with fire pit) to the nicely maintained lakefront area, it’s clear that Bob and Jeanne have invested a lot of time and effort to make the house and overall property a true retreat for their guests.
Little Spider Lake is a lovely lake of about 235 acres. It feels a lot bigger given its shape, which offer a number of coves, inlets and bays to explore. With Bob’s recommendation, we rented a pontoon boat to use during our time for fishing/swimming and general boating on the lake. A buoy in the middle of the lake marks a sandbar/island that was fun to visit and swim off of. The water is extremely clear. It is a good lake for both swimming and fishing. We caught a large number of respectable largemouth bass and oodles of pan fish during our time. Eagles and loons were ever-present while we were on the lake.
Other reviews and the property description already adequately and accurately tout the nearby amenities. It really is hard to imagine a better location. Our family particularly enjoyed riding the Boulder Junction bike trail, swimming and beaching at Crystal Lake, and hiking the Fallison Lake Nature Trail. All just a short 5 minute drive from the cabin. The Northern Cafe and its fantastic breakfast fare is not to be missed.
Having rented other properties in surrounding communities in recent years (some good, some lacking), none would top Bob & Jeanne's on our list of recommendations.
We spent a month in this great house on the beautiful Little Spider Lake. The house is immaculate, grounds are well kept and Bob and Jeanne are very hospitable. The view of the lake from the house and deck is awesome. Our extended family spent time with us and grandpa took some of the kids fishing, etc. We saw bald eagles, loons, many other birds and deer. The lake is pretty quiet except on holiday weekends. There are 66 stairs down to the lake which is the only negative in a way but both of us are 72 and were able to make it up and down without a problem. There also is a deck halfway down to sit and enjoy the view with a good book or a cup of coffee. The lake is clean and water is crystal clear. Our family includes children ages 19 down to 2years old and all enjoyed the water, etc. We had lots of campfires and s'mores. We want to give the rating of 5 stars because we enjoyed our stay so much but some people might have a problem with the bunk beds and 66 stairs. There is a lot to do in the area like biking, all kinds of water sports, many trails, places to rent equipment, great restaurants and a nice coffee shop nearby with wifi. We would definitely rent again.
The property was AWESOME!! The pictures were exactely correct...beautiful! Had a wonderful time with my family. Couple boat landings close by. Went tubing and fishing everyday, visited the other nearby towns for shopping and craft/flea markets! Was a hot week, so the only thing I would say was needed was fans! Would definately come back.
Our family of 4 stayed for a week in July 2013 at Bob and Jeanne's cabin. The photos are very accurate with the views and the layout of the rooms. The cabin was very clean. Little Spider Lake was the perfect setting as it is a relatively small, quiet lake. My family enjoyed renting Bob's pedal boat and kayak to use on it. The pan fishing was fun for the kids both from the dock and in the pedal boat. If you have your own boat there is a launch not too far away which Bob was happy to give directions to. There is a sunken island in the middle of the lake that provided a great place for the kids to go swimming in shallow water. They also swam right off of the dock area with a nice slow gradation. We enjoyed sitting on both patio areas as well as on the cushioned chairs right by the water. The glass sided patio rail offered a great unobstructed view of that portion of the lake. The bedroom linens were clean and adequate. Since we only have two kids, each was able to pick their own bedroom and which bed they wanted to sleep in. The kitchen included all supplies needed to make meals including a gas grill on the patio. The washer and dryer in the basement was nice as we didn't have to pack as many clothes. The area offers a lot of fishing lakes, nature trails to walk and paved and unpaved biking trails. We enjoyed the Crystal Lake and Trout Lake bike trail (paved with easy hills). The Fallison Lake Nature Trail was a beautiful peaceful hike. Crystal Lake which is in the American Legion State Forest (need to have a sticker) offers beautiful beach areas. All of these are less than 10 minutes from the cabin. You are also only a short drive from Woodruff/Minocqua for groceries and restaurants. Bob met us upon arrival, showed us all around the property and also asked for our feedback on how to make the place even more enjoyable upon checkout. There wasn't much we would add. We would recommend this property to anyone looking for a peaceful retreat yet keeps a homey feel to your vacation. We had a great time! Thanks, Bob and Jeanne.
