You can save substantially if you do not pay online! Due to a new fee imposed as of Feb 2016, it costs much more book pay online. You can instead arrange to pay directly.

This beautiful one bedroom home lies in the heart of the tropical district of Puna on the Big Island of Hawaii. Situated in Leilani Estates, one of the more upscale communities in the area, this home features an entire acre of land on which to relax, unwind and get away from it all. Smell the plumeria, gaze upon the hundreds of wild orchids surrounding the property, and let the tropical birds welcome you with their song.

Then, when you're good and rested, check out the wonderful nearby places to visit. Start with Old Pahoa Town, with 11 multi-national restaurants to choose from and an extremely well stocked Natural Foods store. Expand to the surrounding Puna district and visit the world famous Kapoho snorkeling ponds, the Red Road to Kalapana and its natural hot ponds (fed by the island's volcanic activity), and Lava Tree State park.

Within an hour or so you could be in lovely Volcano, situated near the rim of the Kilauea Crater and on your way to viewing the ongoing lava activity in Volcano National Park (ongoing for 20 plus years!).

If you ever feel the need to leave the Puna district (why leave paradise?), there's plenty more to see. Waimea town, social center of the famous Parker Ranch, Kailua-Kona and it's shopping meccas, Kawi and gorgeous scenery, arts and crafts that it has to offer. Waterfalls, helicopter rides, para-sailing, hiking, kayaking, Hamakua Coast...

About Tim Jeffryes

I am a former New York actor turned computer programmer. Having grown up on Oahu, I have always had emotional ties with the islands. In 2003, I was fortunate to be able to acquire the house and an additional 15 acres in nearby Pahoa. I am very interested in sustainable living. The house already uses rainwater and it is heated by the sun. The next step will be PV solar panels and an organic garden.

Tim Jeffryes purchased this house in 2003

Why Tim Jeffryes chose Puna District

Pahoa is the last affordable place in the Hawaiian islands. It is also very quiet, rural and far from the maddening crowd. If you're a tourist that likes to get away from all the tourists, the is the place to be.

What makes this house unique

The house is in a very quiet neighborhood and it is set back from the road 2/3 of the length of the lot. As such, you have a nice feeling of being away from it all. The house is also situation in a section of Leilani Estates that had a big fire several years ago. As such, it is not as lush and other parts of Leilani and therefore has fewer mosquitos and more sunshine.

Charming Tropical Home

  • 5 of 5

This tropical home suited us perfectly. In fact, the longer we were here, the more we liked it. The cottage felt like our home-away-from-home. Although there were neighbors nearby (quiet neighborhood) the plantings around the lot made the house feel very private. Perfectly cozy with plenty of room for two.

The area is good for running with asphalt roads and not too much traffic. Loved having the washer/dryer on location. Also enjoyed close proximity to current lava flow delta. Wednesday night at Uncle Roberts was a fun experience which was only a short drive from here.

Tim and Marly were wonderful to work with on preparations. Great stay!

beutiful house in Puna distrikt

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful house with your own garden, one of the best things: it comes with washer and dryer - very convienent. It was relativly close to volcano NP and just a 10 min drive to the start of the trail to the flowing lava.

We had an overall positive impression of this property.

  • 3 of 5

The reasons we liked this place were that it was quiet, private, and peaceful. The house itself was very open with three large French doors and plenty of windows to provide a cross breeze. Also, ceiling fans to keep the air moving. We liked having the washer/dryer, because part of the reason we were in Hawaii was to help my brother move over to the mainland for an extended stay with us, so we were cleaning his place up and getting work clothes dirty every day. The kitchen was well-equipped with all kinds of bowls, pans, pots, etc.

The somewhat negative sides were the drawers, that although they were very attractive to look at, were hard to use. They kept falling open. Several dishes were cracked and, although, it was kind of funky, none of them matched. The place was kind of funky in general with a tropical jungle theme.

We also had trouble with very tiny ants. They were even smaller than sugar ants. We were very careful about food, and we would clean up and use the ant sprays that they had in the house, but about every three days the ants came back.

Again, in general more positive than negative.
