About Caroline Canavan

William & Caroline purchased New Meadow in 1988 with the plans to open up an overnight summer riding camp for girls. They had a successful riding stable and day camp just outside Philadelphia, but wanted to find a place that would allow their older campers to gain more knowledge and experience the wonderful riding in Virginia.

Caroline Canavan purchased this farmhouse in 1988

Why Caroline Canavan chose Virginia

The wonderful location was a perfect setting for family and children alike. It was remote and quiet, but was also very accessible to I-81, being about 5 miles from the interstate. Virginia is beautiful horse country.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The setting of the farm was ideal for a summer riding camp, as well as a home away from home. There are ponds with fish, miles of wooded trails and open countryside to ride through, and it's location is close to many popular vacation destinations: Charlottesville, Staunton, and Lexington are a short drive away.

Wonderful mini-reunion

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed the home and property with our group of 12 -- 11 adults/teens and one 6 year old-- three distinct families from Philly, Pittsburgh and Winston-Salem, NC. The home was 150 year old vintage -- several updates -- clean and perfect for our group. The staff on the farm were incredibly gracious hosts. The horse trail rides and ring lessons were a huge hit for the kids. The internet connectivity was 'hit-miss' but that made it even better to engage the teens. We plan to come back time and time again.

Family Gathering

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved out long weekend at the horse farm! Members from 2 families traveled from Norfolk, Columbus OH and Dallas to spend time together around the Holidays. The landscape and historic portions of the house made us feel like we were in a Hallmark movie. We took advantage of a horseback ride one of the days, which added to the charm and memories. Collin was on site and ready to help with any needs that arose. We will be back!

Perfect for family reunions

  • 5 of 5

My extended family rented the house for 2 nights to celebrate my parent's 80th birthdays and it was perfect. We had enough beds for everyone and the dining room is huge. The are many different seating areas so that we could be in small groups throughout the house. We were there in the winter, so there would be even more space in the summer with the huge wraparound porch. We took long walks on the beautiful propoery, rode the horses with the amazing assistance of Colin, and cooked a big feast in the enormous kitchen. If you are looking for something off the beaten track that is casual and comfortable, this is the place for you.

Amazing place and staff

  • 5 of 5

We came up for a weekend of baseball and this house is amazing rustic relaxing. The morning were beautiful with horses everywhere. The kids enjoyed feeding them every morning. The pool was clean and had lots of fun toys. Anita and Colin were awesome they were so nice and helpful. We came from our last game and Colin had setup a fire pit and wood for us to roast marshmallows. Plenty of space for a few families to enjoy this piece of heaven. We had the ball team over to cook out in between games and everyone loved the place!! Can't say enough about Anita and Colin and the whole environment

New Meadow Farms was far and above my expectations going into the weekend. The staff were unbelievably friendly and willing to help you out in any way to make your stay amazing. I cant thank them enough, we had a great time and I hope to go back soon.

From the beauty of the land and house, this is a great place to relax and get away from it all. This is a must do weekend get away with the family.
