New Meadow is a beautifully restored 150 year old farm house. Originally it was a log cabin, as you will be able to tell from the exposed beams throughout the house, it has been updated over the years. There is a large eat in kitchen, mudroom, dining room with gas fireplace, library, parlor, TV room, and full bath downstairs. The 2nd floor bedrooms consist of a master suite with a queen bed and bathroom en suite, 1 queen bedroom and 3 bedrooms with twin beds. There is a shared full bathroom on the 2nd floor.
William & Caroline purchased New Meadow in 1988 with the plans to open up an overnight summer riding camp for girls. They had a successful riding stable and day camp just outside Philadelphia, but wanted to find a place that would allow their older campers to gain more knowledge and experience the wonderful riding in Virginia.
Caroline Canavan purchased this farmhouse in 1988
The wonderful location was a perfect setting for family and children alike. It was remote and quiet, but was also very accessible to I-81, being about 5 miles from the interstate. Virginia is beautiful horse country.
The setting of the farm was ideal for a summer riding camp, as well as a home away from home. There are ponds with fish, miles of wooded trails and open countryside to ride through, and it's location is close to many popular vacation destinations: Charlottesville, Staunton, and Lexington are a short drive away.
Our multi generational family of 10 (preschoolers to grandparents) spent Thanksgiving on this beautiful farm. The house is very comfortable and clean. We cooked our Thanksgiving meal in the well stocked kitchen and ate in the charming dining hall. The bedrooms are WONDERFUL! Beautiful linens, comfortable mattresses, and lovely antiques in all bedrooms. We slept well here! The wood stove keeps all the bedroom toasty warm. The children were very excited about their ring rides with Colin. He is very patient and calm. The adults experienced a trail ride in the beautiful countryside. We hope to return here again and again as we are spread out from Pennsylvania through West Virginia and into North Carolina and it is a central meeting place for our family.
We are so glad that we chose New Meadow Farm for our family getaway. There were three generations and everyone, from the grandparents to the grandchildren, enjoyed our time at the farm. Colin did a great job of making sure that we had everything we needed and he and Anita made sure that all of the children (6 total), from the teens down to the 6 year old, had a great time interacting with and riding the horses. The house was a perfect size for the 11 of us and the kitchen was well stocked with all the dishes, pots and pans and utensils needed to accommodate our family for meals. The beds were very comfortable and there was plenty of space for all of us. We arrived on Christmas day and were so happy to find a Christmas tree with lights and decorations, in the room with the wood stove. We had not exchanged gifts yet and we were able to put gifts under the tree, after the children went to sleep, to surprise them when they woke up on the 26th. We really had no complaints and were thoroughly happy with our experience.
Celebrated three family birthdays at this serene, charming farmhouse. Everything we needed to cook/grill, play, and enjoy. Six bedrooms, 3 baths could have accommodated twice our 7 member group. Definitely want to sign up for a trail ride on the property, horses far superior to typical trail horses and the guide, in this case Colin, was so patient and knowledge. We'll be back.
We stayed in the house together with my brother's family. We only had 7 people, the house could easily accommodate a whole lot more. While a bit rustic on the exterior, the house was very clean and had every amenity we needed, including a well stocked kitchen and a huge laundry room. We loved the grill and all the outdoor seating. The property is gorgeous, and the owners were very friendly and helpful before and during our stay. We would highly recommend this house!
We thoroughly enjoyed the home and property with our group of 12 -- 11 adults/teens and one 6 year old-- three distinct families from Philly, Pittsburgh and Winston-Salem, NC. The home was 150 year old vintage -- several updates -- clean and perfect for our group. The staff on the farm were incredibly gracious hosts. The horse trail rides and ring lessons were a huge hit for the kids. The internet connectivity was 'hit-miss' but that made it even better to engage the teens. We plan to come back time and time again.
We absolutely loved out long weekend at the horse farm! Members from 2 families traveled from Norfolk, Columbus OH and Dallas to spend time together around the Holidays. The landscape and historic portions of the house made us feel like we were in a Hallmark movie. We took advantage of a horseback ride one of the days, which added to the charm and memories. Collin was on site and ready to help with any needs that arose. We will be back!
