About the property

3 bedroom railway carriage house sleeps 6, near Selsey, West Sussex

Step back in time and enjoy nostalgia mixed with modern comforts in this unusual property, constructed over two 1926 railway carriages. The railway carriages in their original form run either side of the good-sized lounge/dining room. Situated on the beach at Selsey with fantastic sea views from the first floor lounge & balcony to as far as Brighton. Within easy walking distance of the local Bakers, Butchers and Gourmet Fish and Chips or fresh fish from the local fishermen just a two minute walk away.

All the bedrooms in our 3 bedroom home are contained within the railway carriages with original carriage doors. Lounge/Dining Room with stairs to first floor Lounge and Balcony overlooking the sea. Ground floor walk in power shower and separate bathroom.

Enclosed garden with rotary clothes line and private steps onto the beach.

Unlimited Broadband Internet Access.

You are welcome to bring your own linen (duvet covers/sheets/pillow cases/towels) or hire this locally. Linen should be booked at least 7 days prior to your stay. Details of a local company for linen hire will be provided on enquiry or placing a booking.

Fishing: East beach (at the top of the garden steps!) has some popular fishing spots. The experts sit for hours trying to catch the bass, the novices wait until the summer and until the fish are jumping (you will see them from the balcony) and catch some mackerel for the barbecue.

Diving: If you are interested in scuba diving, Selsey has an active aqua club who can give lots of friendly advice. Their website intro says:

The Selsey Bill branch is a relatively new branch of the BSAC, formed in 1997 by a group of very experienced divers from the local area. Our most experienced divers can date their diving history back to the early 1970’s; some still even have their twin hose regulators hidden away. As a result we have many years of experience of diving in the local area and further afield..

We play an active part in supporting the local community through various activities and have very good contacts with both the local fishermen and the Selsey lifeboat crew; several having trained as divers with our group.

Eccentric but delightful beachside cottage

What a fantastic place!

I booked this for my wife and I for some time away by the sea without children nagging us - and it was a great choice. The place is roomy and warm with a great decking area and garden on the ground floor. The balcony area on the first floor is simply delighful - sitting with the lights off listening to the waves on the pebble beach in front of you, very relaxing. You are not overlooked by the house on the right hand side (and there isn't a house on the left). People walking along the coastal path do peer in jealously and you can't help feeling a bit smug.

All the facilities were in top-notch order, a great shower and a comfortable bed. The kitchen is perhaps a bit low for 2 people over 6 feet but we were eating out anyway. Loads of seating, and even wifi for a sneaky couple of Facebook updates!

The other bedrooms were also well furnished.

The owner was always fast at email responses and helpful.

...and did I say it was right on the beach... excellent!

Amazing, unique and relaxing weekend break

  • 5 of 5

This railway carriage house has everything you need. It is really unique and the photos don't do it justice. We had the most relaxing break and had some lovely walks along the water front. Locals are very friendly. It is very clean and well looked after. We couldn't recommend this highly enough and a weekend is not long enough.

Magical seaside accommodation with beautiful views

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at The Cormorant. The train carriages have a magical feel, and the property is very comfortable and well arranged for family living. The kids loved running around in the garden, and having the beach literally on the doorstep also provided a lot of fun and entertainment. The balcony has lovely views of the beach/sea day or night. I would highly recommend staying at The Cormorant.

A Quirky Christmas

  • 5 of 5

Had a very enjoyable Christmas week with family. Particularly liked the quirkines of the cottage and our 3 year old grandson loved playing trains everyday! The weather was good too which meant we were able to have coffee on the balcony which was a bonus. The cottage couldn't be any closer to what felt like our own private beach.. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it, very different but fun.

Fabulous Weekend Away!!

  • 5 of 5

The Cormarant is a wonderful, fully equipped cottage right on the sea front, protected by the sea wall. The cottage is made up of of two converted rail carriages and lovingly restored and decorated with a comfortable interior and warm cosy beds. Having said that I was surprised at how warm and well insulated this place was...the hot water tank and boiler are well hidden away but keep the place piping hot with an abundance of hot running water.

The house was spotlessly clean and equpped with everything you could think of.

The views are fabulous and we were really lucky with the weather over our new year weekend break, made all the more enjoyable by sitting out on the balcony with a cup of hot chocolate to people watch and just listen to the sea.

There is a fantastic fish counter 100 ft from the house, selling fresh sea bass, which was delicious!!

We had a fantastic time and could not recommend the place more!

Many thanks to Simon and Joss for being so accomodating and helpful throughout our stay.

unique holiday getaway

  • 5 of 5

This is a gorgeous and unique beach side house. Comfortable and relaxing with a balcony that over looks the sea. If you are looking for a cosy and peaceful getaway and enjoy hearing the sea lapping and star gazing at night (we saw at least three shooting stars each evening) you will love this wonderfully designed and lovingly furnished house. Selsey has a small historic old town centre and is surrounded by lovely countryside. The house is also a short drive from Chichester and the South Downs. Very enjoyable place to stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review. We are delighted that you had a relaxing stay. December can be a lovely time of year to visit The Cormorant - especially if you get some crisp sunny days. It must have been thrilling seeing the shooting stars over the sea - I just read yesterday that we are in the Geminid shooting stars they believe are associated with an asteroid, the 3200 Phaethon. It is wonderful at The Cormorant as the sea direction can be nearly 100% dark and great for meteor gazing. We hope very much that you will come and stay at The Cormorant again. Best wishes, Simon and Joss
