As a child my family spent summers with my grandparents in , the 'Palmer Cottage' which is house very close to the road that is next door to this one. A path was kept up that ran from that house to the 'Cribbage', where my grandmother's sister lived in the summer, and is the house for rent. Every day when we were little my brother and I made the mini-journey down the path to visit our great aunt. I now live in Cambridge MA., and my brother lives across the field. My sister, who also owns the Cribbage lives in Washington DC. Our cousin, who also is very involved with keeping up the house lives in Littleton, MA. We have kept the spirit of the house very much as it was in the past, while also trying to make it more comfortable and practical for renters.
The 'Cribbage is a well-loved house that has been in the family for generations and was an out-building used to store corn for the big house on the corner. The carriage house in back of the big house was made into 'The Carriage House Theatre' which, in its heyday in the late 60's and 70's drew actors from New York and livened the quiet town with summer stock plays. The neighboring houses are all on the original family land, now owned by cousins on 3 sides.
The Cribbage is ideal for either a single person, a couple, or a family with children. Teenagers love the idea of sleeping in a little guest cottage. Smaller children can sleep upstairs. Set far back from the road, the setting is very safe.
The water has been treated with an elaborate filter system even though it met drinking water safety standards, to remove rust and completely purify it.
Watch the sun rise over the crest of the field from the main bedroom. Step out of the kitchen with your cup of coffee, sit under the tree and bask in the quiet of shimmering summer mornings in total privacy.
In the evening, on the lawn in front of the house you can watch the sun drop over the river and Newport. Hear the sound of frogs croaking and peeping from the nearby pond, and the crickets singing in the fields. It is an easy walk down Taylor's Lane to watch spectacular sunsets from the beach.
This is a summer rental only, as the house is neither heated or insulated, and we only rent for periods of a week or more. Little Compton is a place of scenic vistas of unspoiled pastures lined with old NE stone walls, fields rolling down to the Sakonnet River and the ocean; a colonial style village with a traditonal 'Commons' in it's center. At lands end, this is a community with a blend of farmers, fishermen, year rounders and summer people, and it feels like a world apart, off the beaten path of tourism.
The rental is an old cottage that was originally a part of a farm, and it is set back in a field with a lot of privacy, without being remote. It is a 15 minute walk to the general store and the 'Commons Lunch' restaurant. A beach where one can watch spectacular sunsets is a 10 minute walk from the house; swimming beaches and the harbor are 15 minutes away by car or bike.
