Overview

Vallespir Barn Rental Photos and Description

Very peaceful rural location, 30 miles from the Mediterranean

Can Llouquette is a recently renovated Catalan Mas (farmhouse).

We cater for couples or families in beautiful self-catered accommodation set in 11 acres of forest and garden with it's own stream. Relax by the pool, stroll around the garden, down by the stream, or simply find your own nook and cranny to enjoy the peace and quiet in a hammock.

Can Llouquette is set in an idyllic location in the Eastern Pyrenees. We are in the most southerly valley in France, an area of outstanding natural beauty only thirty miles from the Mediterranean, very close to Spain and at the start of the Pyrenean mountain range.

What makes Can LLouquette extra special is that it is set in its own little valley; is extremely private with no houses or roads in view or earshot and has acres of meadows, forest and stream for you to enjoy. Yet the local bakery is only 3 mins away and market towns are only 15 mins away.

We have three properties for rental, La Bergerie (for four people), Le Pommier (for two people) and L'Atelier (for four to six people).

More Details

Details for La Bergerie 2 Bedrooms, Sleeps 4, 2 Bathrooms

La Bergerie is approximately 80 sq m, and has two bedrooms (one double, one twin) each with a private bath and toilet, its own kitchen, lounge and terrace. It is suitable for couples or a family of four with one small child. It also has its own private terrace with an easterly aspect (towards Spain), equipped with garden furniture and is perfect for enjoying outdoor meals or simply relaxing listening to the stream. For additional room the Le Pommier has one bedroom (a double) with a private bathroom, lounge and kitchen as well as its own terrace, Le Pommier sleeps two. There is also L'Atelier which accommodates 4-6 people in two bedrooms. We have found that extended families love this arrangement of separate properties, as it means intimacy and privacy with the ability to withdraw to one's own space when required.

About Simon Williams

Ashley is a trained classical singer who performs and teaches.

Simon is a lapsed anthropologist who has a web agency.

Sophia is busy just having fun!

Simon Williams purchased this barn in 2005

Why Simon Williams chose Vallespir

We searched for years for a property with land and a river with several outbuildings. After two years of circumnavigating Canigou on the French / Spanish border we found this place and fell in love. It is tucked away in its own valley, and feels safe and secluded.

What makes this barn unique

You can see the stars at night and listen to owls. There is no light pollution, no noise from roads and no neighbours. Listening to the stream, birds and butterflies it was hard not to fall in love with the tranquility of the place. And the air quality is wonderful, it is a joy to breathe the night-time air!

mountain hideaway offering great walks/excursions

  • 5 of 5

Can Louquette lived up to our best expectations. The description was correct in every detail, but the reality was even better! We shared our holiday with old friends from New Zealand, and even if we had never ventured further than the front gate, the property and and the swimming pool in themselves made a perfect place in which to eat, drink and talk, whilst enjoying the surrounding mountains, the wildlife, and the great welcome and hospitality offered by Simon and Ashley. The accommodation was spotless and beautifully furnished and equipped, down to the last detail. The swimming pool was just perfect. A large supply of maps and brochures gave us endless ideas for excursions, both local and further afield. Walks, as all over France, are always clearly marked and well main tained.

We particularly appreciated the genuinely friendly welcome in the nearby village bar and restaurant at Montferrer. Further afield we explored several local towns and villages, and sampled a large number of good restaurants and bars. For amazingly good value and a genuinely local eating experience, the restaurant on the main road at le Tech was hard to beat. A day across the mountains in Spain, wandering round the Sunday market in Camprodon, offered further new perspectives and change of scene. Nearby Gorges de la Fou provides a testing but rewarding climb through a spectacular rocky gorge. Especially recommended is the town of Ceret with very good art galleries, and the nearby Prats de Mollo for its history and a pedestrianised town centre.

Can Llouquette suited us - four reasonably fit adults -perfectly, and we would very happily recommend it to similar people. We felt it might not be so easy for less able-bodied people, or those with very small children. For teenage children, we were not aware of much that would appeal to that age-group. A car is essential for all but the totally sedentary.

The owners gave us impeccable service, they made suggestions for activities, and made us very welcome into their own home and family. We were free to wander through their estate, usually followed by the inquisitive resident donkey! We were particularly impressed by their ecological commitment, care for the environment, and their passion to share their enthusiasm for this beautiful part of France.

Beautiful setting for a perfect family holiday

  • 5 of 5

The gite was lovely, and ideal for our family, with everything we needed provided. The boys (and the adults) were delighted. The pool, stream, woods and play area meant that there was plenty for the children to do there, and if we wanted to venture further afield there was lots of interest within reasonable driving distance. The welcome was warm, and Simon, Ashley (and Sofia!) were very helpful. The setting really could not have been better, it was a wonderful peaceful yet fun place to be. Both boys have asked when we are going back, and I have already recommended it to both friends and family.

You will long be glad you stayed!

  • 5 of 5

Making a decision to visit place rather off the beaten path, you take a chance. When you make a decision to stay at Can Llouquette you have made the right decision. From the first inquiry to that moment of waving goodbye you will know just how right it was. Upon arrival, you are greeted by warmth and welcome. Your new home for the week (ours was the La Bergerie) feels just like home, stocked kitchen, comfy beds, exquisite views. Take advantage of a prepared meal for your first night. Ashley is a fantastic cook and seems to intuitively know just exactly what will satisfy a hungry belly and warm a soul. Explore Can Llouquette, soak up the beauty of the views. Be still and absorb some peace or hike through gorgeous surroundings. Jump in the car and go and explore the towns nearby. The choices are about endless and not a bad one to be made. Simon and Ashley are veritable fonts of information and Sofia is an endless source of joy. All three, and Chris too, if you are lucky enough to be there when she is, are reminders of what happens when you combine love, joie de vivre, humor and caring. You create an atmosphere for healing, for feeling good, for spending the best week (or 4) you may well spend, ever. You will know, yes, you did make the right decision, one you will long be glad you made.

Excellent

  • 5 of 5

“We had found this spot in Alastair Sawday’s, have never been disappointed with anything we've booked this way and we weren't disappointed at Can Llouquette.

We were made very welcome and the holiday got better still.

The accommodation, pool, weather were excellent. Simon and Ashley were wonderful hosts throughout, always in the background if needed.

The local village was a 30 minute walk but was worth the fresh bread, coffee, croissants and a view of French life...”

Perfect family holiday in an exceptional setting

  • 5 of 5

A serendipitous Google search for a family holiday in the Pyrenees introduced us to Can Llouquette. The excellent website won us over immediately but the reality of the property, the hosts and the location surpassed our expectations. The first guests of the season, we were welcomed warmly and, from the start, offered friendship and genuinely helpful advice tailored to our personal requirements.

A holiday in a new location with 2 small children (15 months and 3 and a half) is not often a holiday, but here we found something special. The children had everything they could need or want - a comfortable and practical home in the gite, a safe and spacious garden with swings, homemade wendy house, trikes and toys aplenty, a paddling pool and ice lollies when the temperature hit an unexpected 28 degrees, and a charming playmate in the bubbly Sophia.

But what set this holiday apart for us was that we were able to have the sort of holiday we once enjoyed before children - fine wine, reading books in deckchairs in the sun, walks in stunning mountain scenery, lazy lunches in beautiful market towns, and daily life in an exceptional setting rather than a bustling 'child-friendly' resort hotel.

Nothing prepared us for quite how remote (we are urbanites, albeit in Ireland) Can Llouquette is. We arrived at night in low cloud and, driving the extremely windy roads up the valley, then down the precipitous driveway, we wondered if we had been foolish to choose somewhere so remote. But the views and sounds the next morning - hills covered in rustling trees, the river at the bottom of the valley (my husband was the first guest to take a dip in the plunge pool - very refreshing!), the terrace perched on the side of the hill with no other buildings in sight, distant mountains, peace and beauty - won us over. OK, it is a 25-minute drive to the nearest town for shopping but that is the appeal of Can Llouquette - you really are getting away from it all. That town, Prats de Mollo, is charming and we returned often to wander through the old stone streets, walk up through the narrow tunnel to the fort and eat in the excellent restaurants.

Our ambitious plans for a walking holiday with toddlers turned to driving because the road journeys here are unbeatable - the drives into Spain via Coustouges to the restaurant at Tapis and over to Camprodon were a particular joy.

Can Llouquette and its hosts are very special and we highly recommend you visit and see for yourself.

La Bergerie

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a thoroughly relaxing two weeks at La Bergerie with our three-year-old daughter in early June 2010. The gite was bright and airy and exceptionally clean and comfortable. The linen was crisp and white, the furnishings simple and attractive. The kitchen had everything we required for preparing light meals and the open plan design provided plenty of room in which to eat and relax when the weather was inclement. There is a secluded terrace with table, chairs and umbrella where we could enjoy breakfast, or we would wander into the beautiful garden for five minutes with a book or a snooze in a deck chair. The property snuggles into the magnificent green mountain side and we spent many hours exploring the woods, enjoying the wildlife, listening to birdsong and the rushing river below, and taking in the unique atmosphere. The property feels very safe for children (the pool is attractively fenced), and our London-raised daughter loved the freedom of running around, collecting flowers and grasses, discovering the giant moths which visit once a year, and admiring the huge black and yellow salamanders that crept out of the undergrowth following a heavy rainfall. Simon, Ashley and Sophia, who live in the main farmhouse, are charming hosts - discrete, yet very generous with their time, providing advice and information when required. We would recommend the location unhesitatingly and hope one day to return.

Car: necessary

We are in the Vallespir Valley of the Pyrénées Orientales, on the outskirts of the village of Montferrer. This is the southern-most region in France and the sunniest, averaging over 300 days per year.

At the heart of the region is Mount Canigou dominating the horizon from almost every vantage point.

The planes undulate with vineyards laid out before the impressive mountains. The higher valleys are covered with oak, ash, beech and chestnut. The views are exceptional, the roads ‘untroubled’, and the weather very agreeable.

There are no properties overlooking us, no busy roads, no light pollution, just perfect peace. The nearest market town is Prats de Mollo at 15mins.

The nearby French and Spanish Mediterranean coast has many long beaches and secluded coves: Argeles, Collioure, Roses and Cadaques.

Perpignan at 1hr is the capital and other famous cities and market towns within reach include: Ceret, Figueras, Carcassone, Montpellier, Girona, Besalu and Camprodon.

Other Activities: Cuisine, wine tasting, sight seeing, Spain, Vallespir Rally, spas, watersports.

Golf: There are some outstanding courses not far from the house. The two closest courses are Domaine de Falgos and Camprodon (over the border in Spain).

The closest of the two is the stunning 18-hole course at Domaine de Falgos.

Established in 1991, it is a Par 70 of 5044 mt, where you'll also enjoy an exceptional panorama: the snows of Canigou and blue of the Mediterranean.

The Camprodon Golf Club boasts a 9-hole course located in the beautiful natural surroundings of the Camprodon Valley.

The club has made the most of the natural course of the River Tortell which cuts across many of the holes: meaning that skill, strategy and focus are required.
