Experience a fairy tale winter wonderland at The Gold Fox Lodge!

The Gold Fox Lodge is a vintage (1930), luxury, 4-season, romantic, riverside log cabin located in the AuSable river valley just 70 feet from Michigan's treasured Big Creek river known for it's plentiful trout, wildlife, birds, and legendary beauty.

Relax in classic comfort in this 3 bedroom, 1 bath log cabin that offers all of the upscale comforts of home while providing a rare and historic north woods romantic atmosphere. Enjoy the cozy great room layout with its leather recliners and massive stone fireplace, and original amber-aged logs and log beams. The kitchen and bathroom have been tastefully updated, maintaining the historic charm of the log lodge while integrating many of today's luxury touches we've all come to expect. Enjoy your favorite cup of coffee or glass of wine while viewing the scenic river and constant river wildlife from any number of locations including the rear lodge sun room, outdoor fire pit, riverside deck, or simply from your bedroom window. No matter the season, the atmosphere of The Gold Fox Lodge is ideal for virtually any occasion.

The Gold Fox Lodge is located nearest to Luzerne, MI (between Grayling and Mio) in the heart of the AuSable River valley. Besides having plentiful Big Creek trout and wildlife to entertain you right outside your back door - you're also only a few minutes from the famous AuSable River - home of the "Holy Waters". In the warmer months common outdoor activities in the region include fishing, hiking, bird watching, canoeing, kayaking, tubing, golfing, ATV trail riding, and horseback riding. In the winter months things don't slow down as the temperatures, snowfall, and terrain make an ideal winter wonderland for hunting, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and even downhill skiing. The area is rich with outfitters supporting your canoe, kayak, tube, ATV, snowmobile, horseback, skiing, and fishing interests; along with other convenient services such as car spotting and livery options to maximize your vacation experience.

Fly fishing enthusiasts have long considered the Au Sable region as a must visit destination. As chronicled in "Fifty Places to Fly Fish Before You Die" you'll quickly appreciate the romance of this region. Experience the Holy Waters, Masons Tract of the South Branch, North Branch of the AuSable, Mio Trophy Water, and famous Hex Hatch. In fact, it was the beauty of this region and quality of trout fishing that led to the formation of our nation's first Trout Unlimited chapter in 1959 by Au Sable river anglers.

The Gold Fox Lodge sits on 10 acres which includes both sides of the river. Guests have access to the entire property.

We have a caretaker and cleaning staff that live within a few minutes of the lodge - and can help with virtually any problem on short notice. Just prior to your arrival we will send you the electronic door lock code so that you can walk right in when you arrive.

Getting Around: The Michigan roads in this region are well maintained year round. The access road to the cabin is also maintained year round catering to 2WD vehicles.

If our calendar is full - please check our sister lodge, "Copper Fox Lodge", just 3 miles away on the AuSable River.

This place is a GEM!

  • 5 of 5

The Gold Fox Lodge was a great spot for my wife, daughter and I. This was our third annual fly-fishing weekend in celebration of our daughter's birthday, and the location, cabin and hosts were perfect for our needs. The cabin itself is rustic charm personified, beautifully restored and decorated, with everything you might need for your stay. Furnishings are quality, comfortable and lodgey. We couldn't get over the attention to detail in the restoration and unique items placed throughout the cabin. The enclosed porch overlooking the bird feeders and stream was great for coffee, cocktails and dining.

Outside, the fire pit, walkway and small deck on Big Creek, woodsy putt-putt course, horseshoes, picnic table, and plenty of seating on quality Adirondack chairs made for ample outdoor recreating. We caught brook trout in the creek right out in back of the cabin, and you can hit a wide variety of quality wading and fishing on the AuSable within 15 or 20 minutes.

Our hosts, Jeff and Beth, were excellent to deal with. The welcome package they sent us was the most comprehensive we have received in our many VRBO stays around the country. There was a nice little loaf of fresh banana bread waiting for us when we arrived. Jeff shared fishing tips with me. And the place was absolutely immaculate. The wifi worked well, in fact, everything we used was in perfect working order. There are cards and games, books and magazines.

While there are three bedrooms, none have closets and they are not large. This was fine for us as we only used two for sleeping and the third as our suitcase room. This is something to keep in mind if, like us, you are not light packers and are planning for a group larger than two couples.

My wife and I rarely return to any property we rent more than once, as it's always a treat for us to view new surroundings. Gold Fox Lodge will definitely be the exception to that rule. This will be our new headquarters for AuSable fishing trips. Many thanks to Jeff and Beth for an outstanding and memorable stay.
