Beautiful cottage in a great location up the hill from downtown Funchal
My wife and I spent 25 days in March in this clean and comfortable cottage. Louise, the owner, and Lourdes, the caretaker were very accommodating during our stay without infringing on our privacy. The cottage was a large enough space that we never felt cramped even during bad weather periods. It was well equipped to meet all our needs with a balcony up a flight of stairs that had a phenomenal 360 degrees view of Funchal. It is a fairly easy 15 minute walk downtown and 5 euro taxi ride back up from the supermarket.
A warm welcome in Funchal
Stayed in this spotlessly clean apartment for a week in February, and, although the weather was not very warm, the welcome from Louise was!
The information she provided on arrival helped us to enjoy Funchal from the start. The apartment was well appointed and the bed extremely comfortable. It was an easy walk down to Funchal - and by the end of the week seemed a lot easier on the steep climb back, although taxis were very accessible and cheap when carrying shopping.
The restaurant recommendations Louise gave were spot on and she was amazingly helpful when our flight home was delayed.
Thanks so much, always a pleasure to help, shame the weather was not so kind you you but hopefully you still got to see & do lots! Thanks again, Louise.
Wonderful apartment that we will be returningto
We had a wonderful stay in The Cottage. We are frequent users of self catering accommodation both abroad and in the UK and this property was the best we've ever stayed in. It was very well equipped and immaculately cleaned. Every need was catered for. We spent many hours on the sun terrace overlooking the city and harbour, usually with a cool beer or glass of wine! Ideal location for exploring Funchal, on foot or using local taxis. We hired a car and soon got used to the very steep roads and tunnels . Both botanical gardens were beautiful and well worth a trip on the cable car to Monte or by car. Also not to miss is Funchal market with a huge range of fruit and vegetables and spectacular flowers. Louise and Raul were the perfect hosts, helpful with information about the local area and so friendly and obliging and made us feel at home from the first day. Must also mention Lourdes who works so hard to keep everywhere so lovely and it was a pleasure to chat with her each day. All in all a fantastic holiday and we'll be returning next year
A First Visit to Madeira
We had a wonderful 8 night stay in the cottage to celebrate my husband's 60th birthday. The cottage turned out just as expected it was immaculately presented with a high standard of equipment. The balcony has fantastic views over Funchal down to the harbour and also up to the hills. Though it is a steep walk up from the main shops and restaurants it is doable but the taxi's and bus service is reliable for those who choose. We were able to visit the main gardens and also the Nuns Valley using the local bus service but Manuel is available if required to do Island tours he brought us from and to the airport which was great. Louise Raoul and her staff were great they were there for advise and made us feel very welcome. We would have no hesitation recommending the cottage to others. We hope to return at a future date.
Thank you for reviewing the Cottage and for you kind comments about the cleanliness and presentation of the property, glad you enjoyed the views from the balcony too, it is the best of our whole property looking over Funchal and up to the mountains!!! Once again thank you, Best Wishes, Louise.
Very comfortable cottage for two
Lovely comfortable accommodation framed by a shady courtyard. Patio furniture available for a quiet moment. Also a private balcony to get the benefit of the sun if desired. Ideal for drinking Madeira Wine looking out over the ocean liner port and watching the pirate ships go by. We ate in a couple of nights and found the cottage well equipped.
Plenty of information in the cottage for things to see or places to eat supplemented by personal info from Louise and Lourdes (thanks for the lift to the supermarket Lourdes). Thanks also to Louise for the map with recommendations located, very helpful. Used the airport link arranged by Louise and found Manuel very courteous and knowledgeable about the island. Recommended for first-time visitors like us.
Sandra and I enjoy walking so no need to say any more about hills, well covered in other reviews. Enjoyed eating out in restaurants recommended by Louise plus had a no frills lunch at Sao Jose in the old town.
Bus travel is easy to get back to the cottage, if you judge the time right, No 33 is best if you don't like hills. Hop on bus tour is good for getting your bearings around Funchal. We also had an 'exciting' bus journey back from Curral Das Freiras! The walk down from Eira Do Serrado is worth a visit for the scenery. Enjoyed tasty chestnut soup in Sabores do Curral opposite the bus stop in Curral Das Freiras.
Enjoyed the cable car up to Monte and then the adjacent cable car to the Botanical Gardens.
Hope to return and will definitely try to book with Louise if possible.
Dear Guests, thanks so much for reviewing the cottage, and for your handy tip´s for future guests on getting around! We´re so happy you had such a great time and enjoyed staying in the Cottage, thanks again, Best Wishes, Louise.
Excellent accommodation that we will return to
Louise and Raul are excellent hosts and, together with their caretaker, Lourdes, gave us plenty of useful information about places to visit, supermarkets, restaurants, etc. The cottage is very clean, has high quality fixtures and fittings and is well decorated throughout. It is very comfortable inside and has plenty of space to sit outside as well. The sun terrace had magnificent views and provided a warm and protected place to sit, have a glass of wine or cup of tea and watch the world, the cruise ships and the cable cars go by. The Cottage is situated halfway up a very, very steep hill which gave us plenty of exercise walking to/from Funchal centre. During our fortnight's holiday we only found a fraction of the numerous bars and restaurants available, which gives us plenty of scope for our next visit. Our thanks to Louise, Raul and Lourdes for helping to make our first holiday in Maderia so memorable.
Thank you so much for reviewing the Cottage, so glad you both enjoyed your first trip to Madeira and we really hope to see you in the future, take care & best wishes, Louise.
The cottage is a perfect base to explore Funchal and the surrounding areas. It takes about 10 to15 minutes to walk down to the centre of Funchal where you will find the cable car to Monte, 'zona Velha' the old town, museums, quaint streets filled with cafe´s & boutiques and the Old Blandy Wine lodge. There is a small supermarket, cafe & cash machine near by and in Funchal there´s a wide choice of places to eat & shop. If you are not driving there are regular bus service´s & taxis available. Down at the harbour there are daily trips for whale & dolphin watching, Marlin fishing and in the 'Old town' there´s the swimming complex 'Barreirinha' where you can access the sea to swim. Palheiro Golf & gardens, Levada walks & the Botanical & Monte Palace Tropical Gardens are just a few of the attractions that can be reached within 10 minutes by car or public transport. If you have a car this is an ideal base from which you can explore the rest of the island as the motorway 'via rapida' and all main routes are just minutes away however, a car is not essential. This is a quiet, safe & friendly neighborhood.
