About David Summersby
During most of the year my wife and I live in Masschusetts, but every August and September we look forward to our St. Croix River House, where I spent every summer of my youth with a large band of cousins and friends whom we still see every year. It's a special place, close to our hearts, and every June and July we offer it for rent to others to enjoy life on the St. Croix.
David Summersby purchased this Cottage in 1940
Why David Summersby chose Scandia
The property has been in my family since long before my time. My grandfather built the original house in 1912, now owned by our cousins, located along the river 100 yards downsteam from our house. My connections to this place go back a long way, and we care deeply about it.
What makes this Cottage unique
Unique to our property is the close proximity of the house to the river, with easy access to swimming, fishing, the canoe and kayak and the dock, which we share with our next-door cousins. Being so close to the river allows us to experience directly the river in all its splendor and sometimes dramatic moods. Reclining in the front yard and watching the full moon rising over the darkened Wisconsin hills and reflecting in the the calm waters of the St. Croix is a sublime experience.

St. Croix River Cottage
Love the cottage and river views. The water was high so we couldn't swim...which we were told could happen. Just mucky and slippery.
My daughter and granddaughter went home because of it, were looking forward to the beach and so was I. However, had 7 days of silence and reading.. Actually, got use to no TV and liked it. You should try it. Didn't miss a thing from the day to day news.
A real gem right on the river.
This cabin is magical. It is right on the river with spectacular views from inside the living room area to outside on the andirondack chairs situated on the lawn overlooking the flowing river. There are kayaks and a canoe available for use, which we used daily. The cabin itself has all you would need for cooking, cleaning etc. this is a cabin well used and loved. Plenty of books to read as there is no tv . We will definitely be back for another stay, hopefully next year. I really can’t say enough , and David was very helpful with any questions we had. We highly recommend this cabin!
property not as described on site
upon arriving at the home, we found laundry(towels and bedding) hanging in the yard and some packed in a small washing machine being washed in cold water. the rest of the unclean laundry was found in a basket, and we were asked by the owner's relative to take care of cleaning the rest.the appliances were less than clean and rusted. we also tried using the so-called beach, where we found mud that we sunk in and and a fast current and drop-off in river, we have small children and thought this was not an appropriate vacation home for our family.
The complaint about the unfinished laundry on arrival is correct - the previous renter failed their contractual responsibility to leave all their laundry clean, folded and put away, which has never happend before. For this unfortunate occurrence we reimbursed the complainant $250.
Regarding the complaint that our beach was muddy and therefore unusable, the reason is this: In summer 2013 the water level in the St. Croix River remained unusually high ever since the usual springtime high water, and therefore until just prior to this renter's arrival our swimming beach was under water, and therefore remained wet and muddy for about a week while it dried out. This situation, while unusual, was beyond any human control. For this disappointment we reimbursed the complainant $750, for a total refund of $1,000.
We believe our $1,000 refund was a generous offer to make amends for the renter's disappointments, both of which were not our fault. Nevertheless, the renter chose to focus solely on these two issues, and ignored all the other benefits and positve aspects of our rental property on the beautiful St. Croix River. It is not our fault that this renter chose not to take occupancy at all, and walked away from her fully paid-up two week rental.
The St. Croix River, on the border of Minnesota and Wisconsin, is a national treasure, forever preserved under the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, managed and protected by the National Park Service. It is primarily a canoeing and kayaking river, plus small outboard motorboats and pontoon boats. In summer, the river is too shallow for large and fast motorboats, and waterskiing and use of jet skis are not appropriate and are discouraged. The bottom is sandy, and the swimming and fishing are great. The Wisconsin side of the river is federal property and is totally undeveloped, so we see no lights across the river at night - just solitude and quiet.
