There is something for everyone at Karin’s Place–from the peaceful and tranquil gardens, gazebo and pool while the kids play on the pirate ship to a full-size movie screen with surround sound and enough books and games to last several lifetimes! Lie in a hammock and take in the sun or cross country ski on the 22 acres of land. The leaf peeping is also impossible to beat.
The idea is imagination. Karin’s Place is a home. You can have your company/corporate meetings in the Grand Ballroom while having your down time in the spa. You can have your family reunion or Big Chill weekend with your 30 favorite family members and friends. The Grand Ballroom is also perfect for yoga, meditation, music making, and performances. Host an organized residency or retreat of any kind!
This home is unique and grand. It was conceived by Jenny's father who was a bonafide eccentric. He lived a large life and was truly one-of-a-kind. There is no other home or inn in the area like Karin's Place.
There are hotels. There are convention centers. There are inns and B&Bs. None has a 1600 square foot Grand Ballroom with a stage, a pirate ship in a sandbox, and a grown up sized swing. Our attention to detail and personal investment in your time at Karin's Place makes every visit distinctive and uniquely special.
Karin’s Place is an 8,000 square-foot home nestled in the woods of Bennington, Vermont. Far enough off the road for solitude and listening to birds and animals rustling in the woods yet just four miles from the town of Bennington and nine miles from Williamstown, Massachusetts, Karin’s Place is in the middle of nowhere and close to somewhere. She can be your ultimate destination and/or she can be your resting ground after taking in theatre, music, museums, skiing, and more.
The house sleeps up to 31 in beds plus a futon with seven bedrooms, two sleeping lofts, 5 1/2 baths. The limit is 30 including children. If all adults, the limit is 24. Exceptions possible. Rent the entire house for 2 days, a week, an event. (Discounts for a week or more, children between 5 and 13, and we do NOT charge the overage fees for children 4 and under.)
Just come. Why wait? We look forward to meeting you!
Our office is on site but Jenny and John live in their own home two miles away.

About Jenny Dewar
Jenny and John met in 1991 while performing in Jesus Christ Superstar in Germany. John was in the pit playing his trombone and Jenny was onstage kicking her legs while making eyes at the pit. Jenny began stage managing in the mid-90s while John continued to play his horn in any number of bands, ensembles, records, and films. They both worked on Broadway for a number of years before deciding it was time to live in the country. (During that time, they managed to get married.) In 2006, they made a quick and sudden decision to sell their home in Astoria, Queens and see what Vermont living was all about. They never looked back. After Robert and Karin (Jenny’s parents) passed away, Jenny’s father entrusted her to continue his legacy of hosting people from far and wide in his home. Robert and Karin originally built the house in 1994 as a weekend retreat. They so loved it here that they sold their apartment in New York City, moved up here full time, and then built a massive addition in 2010. Karin was wheelchair bound, so the house was designed for her accessibility. Ramps, a handicapped shower, and no multi-leveling on the first floor make it easy to get around via wheelchair. In New York, any number of people had keys to their home. It was always full of various guests, rehearsing a musical/operetta, giving a concert, or just hanging out because they had nowhere else to go for Thanksgiving. The addition to Karin’s Place was built in the same vein. Build it and they will come… The bedrooms are named after light operas that Karin and Robert appeared in together during their lives. They were active in the Village Light Opera Group the entire 30 years they lived in New York City. Their first date was a trip to the opera! Sadly, both Robert and Karin passed away earlier than they should have. Jenny and John promised that they would continue to keep the house full and busy. Thus, Karin’s Place was born and Jenny and John have been enjoying a variety of guests ever since.

We had an amazing time staying at this house. It was extremely spacious and comfortable with our large group of friends....and Jenny was the best host ever! She was extremely kind and considerate, and went above and beyond to make sure we had a perfect weekend. Thanks so much Jenny! We hope to come back next year. Cheers!
I think the best part was when I walked in and Dana instantly tossed his baby into my welcome arms! I so appreciate the kind words. It is my goal to make things easy for my guests so that the trip is completely stress and worry free. I love return guests so looking forward to hosting you again!
We always go to vermont every year to spend a mini vacation with friends and family, but out of those trip is this house with outstanding view of nature and the relaxing ambiance of the house. Jenny was very accomodating and flexible in our time of stay in her house. Its the best experience of our whole group to feel you are home away from home. I couldn’t stop praising her during our check out time.. our whole getaway blown us away of fun relaxing and luxurious experienced. Thank you Jen!! Till next time.. surely will book you home again...
Fantastic property, really feels like home.
We had an excellent stay at Karen’s place. We had a large group of families for a ski weekend. The weather turned out to be horrible for skiing so we spent more time at the house than planned. This tunrned out wonderfuly. We relaxed, hiked around the property, did a little sledding with the kids and had giant group meals.
At night the kids put on a talent show and we sang karaoke. It was terrific.
Jenny was on vacation during our stay but except for never meeting her face to face you would have never known she was gone. She constantly checked in with us via text and email. If we had a question it got answered. We were very well taken care of.
The house is almost an attraction onto itself.
It was my pleasure to host this family. My only regret is not getting to meet them in person. First time ever! I decided that I did not want my personal vacation to interfere with their desire to stay at Karin's Place. The only solution is a return visit!
Best Thanksgiving Ever!
We have a family tradition of big Thanksgivings, with the extended family now having outgrown even the largest of our homes. Rather than break up the act, we have rented houses for the last couple of years. We are too big for last year's rental but we found Karin's Place. It had everything we needed - including beds for everyone. This house is amazing in so many different ways and is very well-equipped for a crowd - plenty of dishes, glassware, pots and pans, a commercial 6 burner stove top, two large ovens and two refrigerators, with enough counter space to cook up a storm and feed a small army. And great spaces, including a performance space, which we actually used for a performance. Because of the weather we didn't spend much time outside, except for the kids, who loved the playground. The big kids loved the hot tub. Everybody had a great time and loved the house - and there were many conversations about coming here again for other occasions. And Jenny is fabulous! She is very accommodating and totally commited to making her guests comfortable and happy. Could not have asked for more!!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm sorry I didn't get to meet the later arrivals but I'm glad I got to meet the bulk of the group. Val and Kit - you were absolutely delightful and I really enjoyed our additional bonding time with both your site visit and your earlier arrival. You two just have the best energy and I'm thrilled that you and your family added it to the warmth of Karin's Place. I do hope to see you again!
Every year we do our fantasy football draft in a new location and this year we decided to go to Karin's Place. It was unbelievable! We would highly recommend this to anyone - the hot tub, heated pool, fire pit, and about a billion other amenities were so much fun. Definitely would book again!!!
Thanks Guys! It was great to have you. One might be wary hearing about a group of men only coming for a football event... this group was totally respectful and left the house pretty much as they found it. Definitely would invite them to come back any time! Still trying to figure out the message left in the guest book though... :-D
A Cut Out of Time
Every person in our family enjoyed the relaxation of this unique setting but each one discovered rooms or areas that appealed especially to them. The well-stocked playroom was a popular place and large enough to accommodate train tracks from home. Grandpa practiced saxophone and piano on the stage, was joined by the more musically inclined and drew an audience away from the pool table. Grandma enjoyed reading in the flower garden but was lured away by the children on the pirate ship and in the pool. Sitting on the deck in perfect silence in early mornings was a treat. We found several family activities and restaurants within a short driving distance but time did not allow us to do everything we had planned. Two true highlights were the visit to a sheep farm across the road and the demonstration of the collection of symphonians and antique music boxes. This demonstration was given by our charming and hospitable hostess, Jenny, who adds her own special touches to make each visit unforgettable. .
It was my pleasure hosting this family! Thank you for such nice words. Hope to see you again!
