Birthday Trip

  • 5 of 5

My family and I rented this home as a way to celebrate my 30th birthday; there were 8 adults and 4 children. The home was very spacious and we never felt cramped or lacking personal space. The layout of the home is exactly as the owner shows in the layout and we were able to sleep 12 people easily. The home was built in the early 1900s and has all the charm that you would expect in an older home. The kitchen and bathrooms have been remodeled but the house still has an historical feeling to it and the wooden floors creek in places like you would expect in an older house.

It rained off and on during our stay but it didn't detour us from enjoying the beach which is literally a block away. The front porch was a huge hit with my family and I think we spent more time out there than in the house itself. The sea breeze can be felt from the porch and you can see all kinds of seabirds which my father really enjoyed. The game room and the bunk beds in the adjoining sunroom were a huge hit with the kids and provided them with things to do as the adults prepared dinner in the large open kitchen. As it was NBA playoff season, the guys also enjoyed the 42" TV in the dinning/entertainment room and the gas/charcoal grill in the back yard. The shower in the downstairs bath is perfect for rinsing sand off when you come back from the beach and can be accessed easily by the back door without dragging sand throughout the house. The upstairs bath has a jetted tub which the kids and adults both loved.

There is a small grocery store and liquor store just a block west of the house and was great for picking up things we forgot. If you would like souvenirs, Murdoch’s is just a block away on the beach. We also enjoyed a trip to Moody Gardens, shopping at The Strand, a banana boat ride at 10th & Seawall and took the free ferry over to Port Bolivar and back (and yes we did see dolphins!). We didn't have enough time to enjoy Pleasure Pier but it was easily within walking distance.

The owner was so helpful in answering any questions I had and provides a very detailed list of things to know about the home upon checking in. He was always accommodating and quick to respond to my emails. I would also like to add that the home was extremely reasonably priced for the location and amount of space provided and I would definitely recommend to friends, family or anyone looking to have a great time in Galveston.

Senior Trip

  • 5 of 5

There were 15 of us and had more than enough room. The house was excellent and we are already planning another trip. Everything we needed was right there. House was clean and we'll furnished for our needs. Will recommend this home to anyone. The property owners were awesome and answered all our questions. Great home.

Great time

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time staying at the Ave P house. It was clean, well stocked, and had plenty of room for our whole Girl Scout Troop. We loved being able to walk to many of the destinations that we were going to.

big green house

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed the fact that it was a large home with plenty of room. Close to everything we needed as well as to entertainment. It was furnished well and close to the beach. The downside was: The floors were dirty when we arrived; we were not made aware that the refrigerator needed 12-15 hrs. to cool down so we had to buy some extra coolers and ice to keep our food from spoiling; we were not made aware that the clothes dryer doesn't actually dry the clothes. Through email to the owner we found these things out after the fact. Some up-front info would have been nice. In spite of these things we had a great time.

Owner's Response: I am glad Donald enjoyed the house and his stay and I appreciate his 3 star review. I had not previously heard about the dirty floor but I have passed his comments on to my cleaning service. In season it seems impossible to me that they can prepare a five bedroom house for new residents in less than four hours and meet all of our cleanliness expectations but they do so regularly and will do so in the future. The long time to dry clothes was a last minute surprise since we had an appliance repair done after the house has vacated and before Donald arrived. Unfortunately the dryer issue was being caused by more than one equipment failure issue and the repair was incomplete. After Donald's group left the appliance people returned and discovered the other cause of the problem. The dryer is now performing well. Donald apparantly misunderstood me to have "excused" or "explained" the refrigerator's long cooling time as a defect in our refrigerator. Actually in both the houses we manage and in many other rental homes on the Island the most frequent complaint that owner's receive is that the refrigerator is not cooling the large load of warm groceries that were stocked into the empty refrigerator when the new house guests arrived. Most people don't realize that an empty refrigerator completely stocked with a large load of newly purchased warm groceries can not bring the temperature down to the expected 40 degrees or lower in less than eight to twenty four hours, depending upon the volume of groceries purchased. Most people return home from a trip to the grocery store and put their purchases into the refrigerator and never have a problem but the short cooling period for the newly purchased groceries is accomplished with the help of the previously cooled supplies of food in the refrigerator. We have called appliance repair so many times in the past that they just tell us to give the refrigerator at least eight hours before we conclude that there is a problem. This is exactly what happened in Donald's case but he apparantly misunderstood me and thought that he was waiting for the refrigerator to accomplish its cooling job because of a defect in the equipment. That wasn't the case. It was just the normal cooling cycle we have to expect when large amounts of warm food are placed in empty refrigerators. After the initial load of groceries finally reached 40 degrees Donald had no other cooling issues.

Fun Family trip

  • 5 of 5

We were all very pleased with our stay at this house. We had 8 adults & 7 kids (8-18months old) and had plenty of room. We loved that we could close the kitchen door & French doors in living room to keep little ones from climbing up the stairs! The kitchen was fully stocked, had plenty of towels, fans for rooms without window units, some toys for kids, some beach toys & chairs, a great porch with plenty of chairs, loved convenience of having a washer & dryer, & walk to the beach wasn't too far with little ones being pulled in a wagon. The owner was great about answering questions prior to our arrival via email & was very hospitable! It was a great weekend & we recommend this house for families with & without kids!
