Kapoho Cottage Rental Photos and Description

1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps up to 4)

The Lite House is a small, quality home with comfortable, high-end furnishings and appliances, in a private and quiet section of a gated community. This home is the perfect place for a couple who wants their privacy, and also just a bit of luxury. It could also accommodate a small family (four maximum). The queen-size, 12" memory foam bed has high thread-count cotton sheets for cool, comfortable sleeping. In the living room, the inner-spring futon converts into a double bed.

The Lite House is located at the far end of the subdivision, with sparsely scattered neighbors. It is touched on three sides by a fifty-five year-old lava flow, which is now Hawaii State land as is all land newly formed by lava on the Island. There is nothing between the Lite House and the ocean but expansive lava field and horizon-to-horizon open sky. This combination allows for both unobstructed refreshing trade winds and exceptional privacy within this subdivision. It also showcases spectacular, panoramic sunrises and star gazing. Prior to the 1960 lava flow, the Lite House property was ocean-front. You might say that it is still an 'ocean-front' property, but now it's a quarter mile walk to reach the rugged shoreline (scroll down to see revealing satellite photos). The occasional dramatic crashing wave can be seen and heard from inside the Lite House.

From the Lite House, you can see the Cape Kumukahi Lighthouse in the distance. Its faint beacon adds nighttime charm while it monitors the cleanest air in the northern hemisphere blowing in from off the ocean. These pleasant trade winds are almost always present, and come right through the house when you have the doors and windows open. Enjoy being outside, any time, and with no mosquitoes! At night, the sound of occasional Coqui frogs is a distant and mild serenade.

Champagne Pond, the secluded, geothermally- heated cove exclusive to this subdivision, is a 4- minute walk from the cottage. Here you can snorkel with the sea turtles and fish, or simply float around on the calm, exceptionally clean and clear water. Serious lap swimmers have also found Champagne Pond to be quite suitable.

In the adjacent neighborhood are the Kapoho Tide Pools (aka the Wai'Opae Marine Preserve), known for world-class snorkeling. We provide basic snorkel gear and boogie boards for your use.

If you enjoy bicycling, we make two bikes available to explore this scenic area. The terrain is mostly level, and with very little traffic. Kapoho Beach is a very bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly community. The marine preserve is about a fifteen-minute bicycle ride from the house, or you may drive to the parking area and then walk the last quarter of a mile to it.

Note: We did not design this nice little house, but we named it the 'Lite House' because it is best suited for normal-size folks. Consequently, we regret that it may not be comfortable for 'extra-plus' sized guests.

About Richard or Diane Beers

I (Diane) am a kindergarten teacher having just retired. My husband, Richard, and I are looking forward to spending some quiet-time in Kapoho! We have family there, and look forward to when we can see each other any time we want, just by hopping on our bicycles. And I can't wait to take my air mattress down to Champagne Pond every day and float in the lovely, warm water with the turtles!

Richard or Diane Beers purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Richard or Diane Beers chose Puna District

We love the constant, pleasant climate of Kapoho, with its famously clean air. Additionally, mosquitoes have had a unrequited lifelong love affair with Richard, so their absence at this particular home's location especially appealed to him! And we enjoy the fact that the location is so peaceful, and with such privacy.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I shared this Lite House with my mom from the time we arrived on the evening of the 11th until now. This lovely home is ideal for quaint evenings in and walks in the nearby area (location is fabulous) & close enough to the beach/Champagne Pools but far enough from the city noise. I thank you for putting together this sweet, sweet place, we have enjoyed comfort and relaxation here at best. For guests to come lend your senses to the sounds of the ocean (we keep the back door open when we are home), the starry night-sky, the smells of native flora and vegetation around, and the sensation of the winds & breezes. What a gorgeous home & a delightful vacation here. My mom & I & father in heart have thoroughly loved it here.

An ideal quiet retreat for couples

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed staying at the Lite House very much. The house itself is small and cute, and well appointed- it had everything we needed to feel comfortable and homey. It is located at the edge of the subdivision and because of the way it is placed on the property it feels like you are in the middle of nowhere. We loved how peaceful and quiet it was. We spent our mornings drinking coffee on the lanai and watching the sky change over the old lava flow with the ocean in the distance. It was also great not hearing any people or cars while we were there- only the sound of chirping birds and the ocean in the distance.

In addition to offering a wonderful vacation home, Richard and Diane were flexible and worked with us on our dates. We were originally to stay at the Lite House the same weekend that TS Darby was forecast to bring severe weather to the Big Island. They allowed us to change our stay to later dates that were good for us in order to avoid the storm. We are so glad they did! We had perfect weather and an unforgettable getaway. We will stay at the Lite House again next time we visit Big Island.

Relaxing stay with everything you need!

  • 5 of 5

Our lovely stay at the Lite House was our first stop on a whirlwind trip to many places. It was just how we hoped it would be. The house had all we needed to spend casual nights in and there was the town of Pahoa not far away to get whatever we needed. It was really a peaceful and ideal setting with the ocean waves crashing not far away. We even did some exploring in Kona and Hilo, but decided the peace and tranquility of the Kapoho area was just what we wanted. A perfect start to our trip - staying in the Lite House!

Beautiful little cottage in an awesome location

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed in the Lite House with our 22 month old son. The house was very clean, cozy, and well equipped with everything we needed for our stay. Plenty of room for all three of us. The bed was comfortable and we loved cooking in the kitchen. Our favorite part of the house was the great covered porch area. We spent much of our time out there, eating our meals at the table on the porch and even sitting on the chairs provided while we watched the rain. The location is absolutely perfect...quiet streets with everyone around being very friendly. Walking along the streets and admiring the beautiful houses and landscaping in the area was something we enjoyed immensely. We could hear the ocean and the cool breeze coming off the water kept us comfortable in the house due to the large sliding doors. Overall, a great experience for our Hawaii vacation!

Peaceful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is simple but has all you need to enjoy a relaxing time on the Puna side of the island. The Champagne Pond with warm water swimming is a short walk away and the Wai Opae tide pools with great snorkeling are an easy bike ride south. The kitchen is well equipped for making your meals at home. The neighborhood is very quiet and you can hear the ocean and see the surf spray at times. The lanai is private, yet open to stark lava fields and sea breezes. The rains wash through and the stars sparkle at night. This is a great spot to relax and let Hawaii work its magic on you.

Top for two - a peaceful place

  • 5 of 5

The house is lovely furnished and very snug. The kitchen is very well equipped. Beds are extremely comfortable, no aching backs in the morning. We very much enjoyed sitting on the lanai and gazing at the glorious stars or at the huge moon rising above the ocean. Swimming and snorkeling in the gorgeous Champagne Pond with its friendly huge inhabitant Mrs. Turtle, just a five minutes walk away. Cute little details like the dolphin pegs. A very peaceful place. We hope to come back!
