If you are looking for a clean, warm place to put up your feet after a day in the mountains, the Hiker's Roost (formerly Chickadee House) is a three bedroom, comfortable base camp in the High Peaks of the Adirondacks.

The Hiker's Roost is located in the hamlet of Keene Valley. Keene Valley is the starting point for amazing mountain access into the eastern High Peaks.

We offer a vacation rental with a two night minimum. Discounts occur if you book three nights or more. Dogs are welcome!

The Hiker's Roost is available as a base camp while you explore the eastern High Peaks Region of the Adirondack Park -- whether you're here to hike along the valleys, climb the peaks, kayak or canoe the still waters, or visit the museums and other hamlets in the region.

The Hiker's Roost is a simple yet comfortable single story manufactured house with a full kitchen (stocked with dishware, cooking utensils, plates and glasses, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, etc...), washer and dryer, plus two full bathrooms (one with an extra large bath tub). You'll find a collection of mountaineering books to inspire you, as well as local hiking guides for you to borrow during your visit.

The Hiker's Roost is dog/pet friendly and has a fenced in back yard. The house is on NYS Route 73, two doors down from an wonderful local farm store (Rivermede Farm based here in Keene Valley). You will be walking distance from the Mountaineer (less than 10 minute walk) and local dining places such as the Ausable Inn (approx. 15 minute walk), and the Noonmark Diner (approx. 20 minute walk).

The Hiker's Roost is set up to be ecologically friendly. The house is painted with no-VOC paints, we use recycled paper products, and we provide ecologically safe dishwashing and clothes washing soap to protect our local environment.

Price is for double occupancy. Each additional person is $35/night. Discount of 10% if booked for three nights or more.

Check out time is 11am.

Enjoy staying in the heart of the Adirondack High Peaks! Please contact us for any additional information.

About Kinna and Gene Ohman-Leone

Kinna and Gene Ohman-Leone are professional dog & horse trainers who use only positive reinforcement methods (no punishment or pressure). They split their time between the Adirondack and their Vermont farm and have 3 horses, 1-2 foster horses in training, 4 sheep, 2 border collies, and a small flock of chickens (all the other animals are also clicker trained!).

Kinna and Gene Ohman-Leone purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Kinna and Gene Ohman-Leone chose Whiteface Mountain

Kinna Ohman-Leone purchased this property as her main home in 2004. She loved the fact she could live in the midst of the Adirondack High Peaks, while being two doors away from Rivermede Farm Store (with the farm itself located just a mile away). She finds the community of Keene Valley to be a vibrant place to be!

What makes this cottage unique

Kinna Ohman-Leone loved living here and exploring the local trails (whether along creeks or up mountains), eating great food at the Noonmark Diner and Ausable Inn, and enjoying the local communities of Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, and Tupper Lake.

great location but property is tired

  • 3 of 5

Property is well situated for hiking and climbing. It is close to local restaurants which avoids the drive to Lake Placid. Kitchen was reasonably appointed with the necessities for basic meal prep. A few minor changes would make for more enjoyable stay - shower head in hall bath was not effective, shower in MBR was great but shower basin did not drain well and filled quickly, repair washing machine. Extra house key would be handy. Twin beds were very uncomfortable. Having said this, the place was good value.

Owner's Response: Customer satisfaction at the Hiker's Roost is our highest priority, and we encourage travelers to inform us immediately if they notice any malfunction or any way we could make your stay more enjoyable. We leave a phone number where we can be reached at any hour - and maintenance personnel are available at short notice. Spare keys are always available upon request. We appreciate feedback and encourage travelers to call (or write) us directly so that repairs and improvements could be made in a timely way, and that they also might benefit. In this case, most of the issues would have been repaired/addressed within an hour of us being notified - they have all been fixed and addressed as soon as we received this communication. We try to keep everything in working order at the Hiker's Roost and appreciate, tremendously, our guests' involvement. Again, we are only a phone call or email away. Thank you!

Enjoyed our two night stay in close proximity to hiking trails. Everything came as advertised. Would stay again as a 'base camp' for future adventures.

Excellent!

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I stayed at the Hikers Roost for two nights so we could do some hiking in the High Peaks region. The house was simple, clean and convenient - perfect for our adventure in the Adirondacks. Access to some of the best trails in the region is within a five minute drive. We had dinner in Lake Placid (20 minutes away) each night, but there are several places to eat right in Keene Valley. There is no cable tv and cell phone reception is spotty, but the Internet connection is solid, so we used Skype and IM to communicate with the our friends and family.

We had a great time and are already planning a return trip.

Great base for hiking and enjoying Keene Valley

  • 5 of 5

The Roost was a perfect base for our adventures in the Adirondacks. A few minutes away from some great trailheads (John's Brook, Hurricane), and just 25 minutes to downtown Lake Placid. It's quite large, and the open concept living space is perfect for a family. The Roost has has everything you need for cooking, but there are great places to eat in Keene Valley, including the lovely Au Sable Inn restaurant and the diner. We had a great time and will be back.

Great Location

  • 4 of 5

This is our second time staying here. We wanted some place not super fancy, not too expensive, and roomy to be our base camp for hiking fun and this was perfect. Great location for hiking in the high peaks, within walking distance to a few things like a market and The Mountaineer, and not a far drive to Lake Placid. There was only two of us so plenty of room. Inside is clean. We don't need really any amenities or entertainment or anything as we hope the only time we spend in the house is sleeping, so this was fine for us, but just note that you need to bring your own entertainment if you want it. There's a TV but no cable and no DVD's - you need to bring your own. There's a few books and board games. My only thing is during this trip (as opposed to our first trip in winter) was the front and side of the house (yard wise) look a little neglected - the bushes just look all overgrown and driveway needed mowing, etc. But overall we would come here again.

Owner's Response: We're so glad you enjoyed your visit to Keene Valley and the Adirondacks! And yes, we've spoken to many guests who prefer our lower rates to the cost of a modern entertainment system and cable. We provide internet at a streaming rate which allows movies - and this service is costly because there is only one local provider of internet and cable in Keene Valley. (We're too small and remote to attract the lower rate national providers.) Still though, we enjoy supporting local endeavors and businesses so we think it's worth it! Regarding the lawn maintenance and any other issues our guests encounter, we highly encourage guests to contact us directly. Our guests are our eyes and ears and we are more than willing to address anything they draw to our attention! We have a great team of local expertise. We suspect our wonderful teenage neighbor who maintains the lawn has become caught up in schoolwork. We will contact him today and ask him to spruce things up as soon as The Hiker's Roost is free of guests!
