Kinna and Gene Ohman-Leone are professional dog & horse trainers who use only positive reinforcement methods (no punishment or pressure). They live in the Adirondacks and have 2 horses, 1-2 foster horses in training, and 2 border collies.
Kinna and Gene Ohman-Leone purchased this cottage in 2004
Kinna Ohman-Leone purchased this property as her main home in 2004. She and Gene love the fact they can live in the midst of the Adirondack High Peaks, while being two doors away from Rivermede Farm Store (with the farm itself located just a mile away). They find the community of Keene Valley to be a vibrant place!
Kinna & Gene love living here and exploring the local trails (whether along creeks or up mountains), eating great food at the Noonmark Diner and Ausable Inn, and enjoying the local communities of Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, and Tupper Lake.
We've stayed at the Hiker's Roost several times with our dogs. It's minutes from several major High Peak parking areas, as well as great non-High Peak mountains and a few fire towers. The backyard is fenced in, making it an easy stay for dogs. It's minutes from Marcy Field, which has a hiking trail that dogs are allowed on, as well as a gravel path outlining the field for those that only need a 20 minute daily walk with senior dogs. The furniture is comfortable and it's great to have access to a full kitchen so there's an option not to have to eat out for each meal. The house is clean and cared for and the owners care very much for the environment.
This house is so enjoyable and so close to the trails! The beds were comfortable and there was a nice farm-sized table where we ate and talked. Our family spent a very relaxing stay here, hiking the trails and visiting Lake Placid.
The house is just down the road from the Ausable Inn and the Noon Mark Diner, where we had delicious meals. We also had a very nice meal at the Baxter Mountain Tavern which is a short drive away. We enjoyed our visit to the mountains, and this house truly is a nice base camp for that!
I stayed for three nights at the Hiker's Roost and found it to be quite comfortable. It is very conveniently located near the High Peaks, two doors down from a coffee shop and an easy walk from The Mountaineer and other small eating places. It is also very quiet at night with only the occasional car passing by. The kitchen is well stocked with all the basics and a composting bin (awesome), there is an interesting library of books to browse and plenty of places to sit. I also found that there was ample space to spread out my gear as I packed and unpacked. The owners are extremely friendly and very willing to communicate through email. Some other reviewers have commented on the mattresses. The IKEA mattress is more of a futon mattress than a full mattress. I didn't find it to be a problem (especially after a long day of hiking), but if you are sensitive about your mattresses it is something you would want to know ahead of time. Also note that the house is dog friendly, which means that dogs have obviously stayed there and left their mark, so if you dislike dog hair than you will want to know that as well. The Roost is not a home of luxury, but it is comfortable and convenient for those who intend to spend most of their Adirondack time outside. WiFi access and a little deck out back made for some relaxing evenings.
The Hiker's Roost was exactly what we were looking for when starting our 46ers adventure. Clean, quiet and convenient to all. Dozens of hiking trails within just 10-15 minutes (the gardens was barely 2 miles away!) and cute shops and restaurants in easy walking/driving distance. It was a great value (almost too much space for the two of us) and would be perfect for a family. Kinna and Gene were quick to respond to any questions we had before and during the trip. I only wish that the queen bed was a bit more comfortable; after a long day of hiking, it would have been nice to come home to something more supportive.
Property is well situated for hiking and climbing. It is close to local restaurants which avoids the drive to Lake Placid. Kitchen was reasonably appointed with the necessities for basic meal prep. A few minor changes would make for more enjoyable stay - shower head in hall bath was not effective, shower in MBR was great but shower basin did not drain well and filled quickly, repair washing machine. Extra house key would be handy. Twin beds were very uncomfortable. Having said this, the place was good value.
Enjoyed our two night stay in close proximity to hiking trails. Everything came as advertised. Would stay again as a 'base camp' for future adventures.
