My name is Mike Hopkins. I am a retired school teacher, contractor, tour operator and zoo director.
Yes, zoo director. I built the zoo in my home town of Bakersfield, California. When I traveled the world looking for a perfect place to live that combined the best of a healthy lifestyle and a dedication to preserving nature, Costa Rica topped the list!
My wife, Irma is Costa Rican and we enjoy sharing this wonderful country with others, especially new-comers to the tropics. We invite you to come stay with us, and promise to do our best to make your vacation to Costa Rica a great one.
Mike Hopkins purchased this condo in 2006
Actually I built the six condominiums here on Potrero Beach, called Twin Dolphins. We live in one of the the two Penthouses that occupy the third and fourth floors. We have two bedrooms in our Penthouse condo on the third floor that we rent, with Breakfast included.
I actually drove from California to Costa Rica, visiting many of the beautiful cities and beaches in Mexico and all the Central American countries. When I got to Potrero Beach, Costa Rica I realized that I found the perfect spot, with beautiful beaches all around, jungle and mountains behind, parrots and monkeys everywhere, schools, restaurants, shopping and amenities close by.
Poterero is a safe and secure beach. It is ideal for swimming, snorkeling and taking fabulous beach walks in a quiet community setting.
If you want a loud, disco, late-night partying atmosphere, you are in the wrong place. Our guests like to relax and rejuvenate....with peaceful walks and beautiful sunsets. Our days come complete with laying in a hammock with gentle ocean breezes or taking a dip in our sparkling pool, or hiking and reconnecting with nature. I feel like I have added a year to my life for every year I have lived in Costa Rica. I moved permanently in 2001 and my only regret is that I did not do it sooner.
This was our first visit to Costa Rica. We chose to rent Mike & Irma's penthouse and could not have made a better decision!! We enjoyed the amazing view from our balcony, the delicious beach view breakfast and the conversations we had with the hosts.
This unit is centrally located to many nice beaches. We rented a car which was very convenient because we drove to many of the beaches in the Guanacaste Area and had a great time (Flamingo, Brasilito, Conchal (our favorite), Penca, Pan de Azucar and Tamarindo). Mike and Irma recommended the Hacienda Guachipelin one day adventure pass. If you are up for an adventure this is a Must!!! The drive is approximately 1 1/2 hours. We had the most amazing and adventurous day there (very well worth the drive). The activities included river tubing, zip-lining, horse back riding and hot springs. Mike is very knowledgeable of the area and can provide recommendations based on your interests.
We had and amazing time at Mike& Irma’s. They are very hospitable hosts and strive to make your visit memorable. You will not regret staying here. Pura Vida!!!
We chose this property for our first trip to Costa Rica based on the reviews and location. We opted for the penthouse and when I say we could not have been more pleased is an understatement. The view is AMAZING at night and day. The location is centrally located to so many amazing beaches and we just took off during our week there and explored much of the Guanacaste beaches every day. Mike and Irma made the most amazing breakfasts and shared thier knowledge of the area. Mike booked one of our best snorkeling excursions for us and saved us hours of driving with his directions and directed us to great local restaurants. My boyfriend is still making what he calls "Michaelito" breakfasts and we are still talking about how Mike is one of the nicest persons we have ever met. Great beaches to walk to but would recommend getting getting a car to the full experience of the area.
One of the most outstanding experiences of our lives. The b&b lived up to all of our expectations and then some. Mike and Irma were fantastic and extremely hospitable. The Guachipelin Hacienda excursion was awesome. The food at Las Brisas and music and drinks at El Castillo (both within walking distance) did not disappoint. Every morning breakfast was served on the beach front balcony - no better way to start the day than to sip your coffee while listening to the ocean, watching all the beautiful birds and fish jumping in the water.
We stayed for 11 days and did not have one bad day! A big shout out to @letmecook4you (Instagram) or letmetcook4you.wordpress.com for coming to us and preparing a four course gourmet meal... unlike anything we've ever eaten!
Playa Potrero is beautiful, but there are also many other beaches nearby - each one with it's own uniqueness and within a short drive or bus ride away.
Words fail us to describe what an amazing vacation this was. Again, Mike and Irma are perfect hosts and were eager to make our stay unforgettable. Pura vida!
First time to Costa Rica and Absolutely loved it! Mike and Irma's place was prefect! I was traveling by myself and a bit hesitant, however any fears I had were unfounded. I felt completely at home the minute I stepped into this beautiful place. I felt very welcomed and safe. Had a blast and couldn't ask for a nicer host. Th surrounding area is beautiful. Glad I rented a car so I could explore. Loved coming back "home" and finding a clean and comfortable place to relax after the days adventure. I will be coming back! Thanks Mike! You are a wonderful guy and enjoyed my stay immensely.
My wife and I took our very first trip out of the U.S. to Costa Rica celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary and we couldn't have picked a more perfect place to stay than at Mike and Irma's Twin Dolphins B&B. It was such a wonderful spot right in the middle of a 2-mile long, quiet beach with gentle, soothing waves all day and night, that you can take a short walk in any direction to restaurants, activities, grocery store, etc. Mike and Irma have a very nice condo and we stayed in their huge penthouse suite with private balcony facing the beach, sleeps 4 if you wish, jacuzzi tub and very large stone shower with big window facing the beach, we loved that! They made us wonderful good sized breakfast on the deck every morning, I really enjoyed Mike's "coffee thirty" and my wife usually indulged in a nap in the hammock soon after! Mike and Irma were very friendly and helpful with the local area, things to do and places to eat. We loved the river tour with crocodiles that they joined us on. The price for what you get and where you stay is very reasonable, probably the best deal in the area. I wouldn't have wanted it any other way than to stay with them, we really hope we can get back there in a year or so.
We stayed at this location in the penthouse room and it was air conditioned, spacious, clean, safe and had lots of light with incredible views of Potrero beach. Mike cooked the best breakfasts for us which always included tons of local fruit, traditional dishes and basic pancakes and smoothies that my 10 yr old twins loved. Mike and Irma are full of great information and help with booking activities and recommending restaurants, music and good bars. The trip was a blast and it included an adventure tour at Hacienda Guachipelin, which is a must do for all ages. We also really enjoyed the location being next to Bahia Del Sol, which was a resort that you could order a drink at while your kids swim.... also his bed and breakfast is a great location for walking and exploring a huge variety of beaches and visiting, Coco Loco my, favorite bar/restaurant on Flamingo beach, next door. The beauty of Potrero beach, is that it's less crowded and has calmer waves so it was ideal for us and our children. We loved Potrero town, which has lots of character, cows and friendly locals. There is just enough variety of places to walk to, but having the rental car was nice for trips to Tamarindo, Dantito, Conchal, Playa Grande, Brazilito, and many more beach towns to explore. When we returned to Potrero, we were always happy with our choice of beach to stay for 11 days. We would definitely return as we loved the food, place and company of Mike and Irma, whom were so helpful every step of the way. It was much appreciated.
I have driven from California all the way to Costa Rica and seen many beaches....Potrero beach is the best. We are right on the warm blue Pacific ocean with lots of activites immediately at hand. Whether you are a water person: swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, sailing, jet-ski; or an adventure person: quads, horseback riding, zip-lining, river rafting; or a nature person: volcanos, waterfalls, hiking, bird watching......Potrero beach is surrounded by it all. We can help you do any or all of the activities above. We are experts at helping clients with their itinerariesr . There are side-trips to Monteverde cloud forest, Arenal and Rincoln de la Vieja volcanos, Palo Verde national park with a river boat excursion to see crocodiles on the Tempisque river, zip-lining on the Canopy Tour, or even a 1 or 2 day trip to Granada, Nicaragua......we want your trip to Costa Rica to be one of the best ever!
