About Chris & Rhonda

My husband and I were born and raised in Florida(my husband in DeLand). We spent 8 years lovingly restoring this1905 southern jewel. We enjoy the many activities and pedestrian lifestyle thriving downtown DeLand provides.

Chris & Rhonda purchased this house in 2001

Why Chris & Rhonda chose Deland

We have many family and friends who live in Florida. We lived in this home for many years and retained it as our vacation home upon moving for a career opportunity. It is wonderful that we can still enjoy our DeLand roots, home and share it with others.

What makes this house unique

People ask what is my favorite room and I always say, 'the wrap around porch' : ) Sunset is my favorite time to have a beverage on the porch as the ocean breeze rolls inland and the moss changes different colors from the sun--- A nice beginning to the evening before walking downtown for dinner & entertainment. My children would argue it is the media room/guest suite(loft) on the 3rd floor.

Plenty of room

  • 5 of 5

We were in town for our daughter's wedding and needed a large space to accommodate a lot of people coming and going. The house worked great for our needs! Plenty of room. Never ran out of hot water. Heat (yep, we hit a cold spell!) and AC worked well to keep us comfortable. The only piece of advice I would give to anyone considering renting - don't plan on cooking for your large group. The kitchen is not set up well. Very limited pots and pans and not of good quality. Outdoor grill was desperately in need of cleaning. But - it just gave us an excuse to eat out! I still give it 5 stars despite the kitchen because everything else worked out so well for us and we would happily stay again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your favorable review. So pleased you had a nice visit. Sorry the kitchen did not accommodate your group fully. It is a challenge to keep quality utensils and supplies in the kitchen. There should be a full set of pans and a few baking sheets/dishes. Perhaps they were difficult to find or have mysteriously disappeared. I believe sometimes items get mixed in with past renters personal supplies and it is not very easy to track all the many items needed in a kitchen. The grill cleaning supplies should be located within the grill cabinet -- I will remind the staff to check it. Thank you for not holding that against us. Your understanding is very kind. I will address this concern on my next visit. Thank you again, Rhonda

Beautiful historical home, centrally located

  • 4 of 5

This was a great place to stay for our family while we visited my parents. Mom ended up in the hospital our entire stay and we were only 4 minutes away from them. There were plenty of beds and space to spread out and enjoy. My teenagers loved the third floor and quickly moved in to own the space! The owner was super easy to contact with a few questions I had and didn't seem bothered when I couldn't figure out the wifi password or door codes.

I rarely give five star reviews, and did hold back on this one. The 2nd floor shower had minimal water pressure and every time I showered the hot water ran out within five minutes. (Even when I was the only one that had showered) However, two of my kids said they never had that problem, so I don't know what happened there?!? Especially since I am the one who set their shower handles and got them started.

The inside floors seemed dirtier - even on day one - than they should have been. Went outside one morning to use the porch swing and front porch hadn't been swept in a while, and outdoor pillows were pretty filthy.

But everything else was clean and comfortable! Loved the beds, linens, supplies, historical renovations and location! Outdoor space was relaxing and nice. I loved the pond!

I would definately stay here again as long as I were guaranteed a hot shower with more pressure! And to be fair, I wasn't there long enough to try the clawfoot bath upstairs or the shower on the main floor. Maybe they were better.

Owner's Response: Hello, Thank you for your favorable review. I am glad you had a nice visit. Sorry to hear that your had difficulty figuring out our tankless water heater upgrade we added to the house. A quick text might have saved you from the frustration it might have caused. The multiple levels of the house require a bit more time to travel up. The only solution we found, in our research, was to move the a tankless water heater into each bathroom. It was too costly for us to consider so keeping the small delay was financially necessary. The porch and cushions are cleaned seasonally, however in Florida you can clean the porch and the next day it is covered in pollen again. The lawn care provider are scheduled to blow off the porch each week, perhaps they are needing reminding. Our cleaning staff try to wipe down the furniture before a renter but to clean the entire porch each visit would be an expense that we would not want to pass on to renters. It unavoidably will track in onto the wood floors very easily. Thank you for your efforts to keep the house tidy and for caring for our sweet home. We greatly appreciate families who care for the house during their stay and enjoy it's historical character and charm. Thank you once more, Rhonda

The property was great

  • 5 of 5

The house was great! Clean and had everything we needed in the kitchen. The layout was nice downstairs. We didn't spend any time on the 3rd floor, but it had a lot of character. Also the sweeping porch and big front yard with a fence was a nice surprise! Loved sitting on the swing on the porch! The location was great for walking downtown for icecream after dinner. Highly recommend. Rhonda was great at communicating with me throughout the stay as needed.

We will hopefully be returning soon and renting from the same property. Highly recommended! Thanks again Rhonda and family for allowing us to feel right at home :)
