Cozy, charming lakefront cottage on quiet, spring-fed Lake Chaffee. Relax on the deck, swim, canoe or kayak around the lake to one of the little islands with rope swings, float on a raft, fish, enjoy the changing light, read, nap, go hiking in the nearby state park, or bike on scenic roadways.
Too calm? Head out for some antiquing in Pomfret, Woodstock or Brimfield, or head towards the CT wine trail, Sturbridge Village, nearby University of Connecticut, Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods Casinos, or Thompson International Speedway. Or try a ropes course or zip line at The Adventure Park at Storrs.
If you don't feel like grilling with lake views and eating under the stars, then head out to local, charming cafes.
The cottage itself is fully equipped - simple but comfortable indoor/outdoor living. Two bedrooms, one bath, full kitchen, and a living room and dining area which opens up to a very large deck overlooking the lake. Wi-Fi, cable television, free movies, music, board games, cards and books. Enjoy the outdoor fire pit in the evening.
Located in historic Ashford, Connecticut, between New York City and Boston and an easy commute to Hartford, Boston or NY.

This was our fourth year in a row of staying in "the little red house by the lake" and it was as as enjoyable as ever! The house is small but plenty big enough to be perfectly comfortable for a couple, with a second bedroom for an additional family member if needed. The view of the lake from the dining area looking across the huge outdoor deck is fantastic -- very peaceful yet always changing from one minute to the next. We never turn on the TV because what's outside the glass sliding doors is far better. The description and the photos in the listing give an accurate idea of what this property is. If you like to escape city noise, traffic, and crowds, and you have no problem entertaining yourself without closeby nightclubs, theaters, etc., you'll love this quiet, rural get-away cottage. Oh, and the owner, Kathy, is an absolute joy to work with. Haven't found anyone better in decades of renting vacation homes all over the country. Thanks, Kathy, for another perfect summer visit to Connecticut!
I highly recommend staying in this wonderful cottage. The setting is amazing. It is a small place and yet the layout doesn't feel cramped. It is equipped with EVERYTIHNG, and Kathy was great to work with.
We enjoyed our stay in this lovely little cottage with our spectacular waterfront view. The deck is magnificent, with a great outdoor dining set and cocktail area. The place came fully stocked for outdoor fun, with a canoe and kayaks, etc., for fishing or just paddling around. Indoors, we found everything we needed -- fully stocked with linens and everyday essentials. The best was the dining room table, with a view over the lake. Beds are comfortable and clean, as is the all of this nice Connecticut cottage. Oh, and whatever you do, take a ride over to the Coriander Café for dinner!!!
Where to start telling you about this magical place?!? Double sliding glass doors in the dining room offer amazing views of the lake and horizon & lead to a good sized, comfortably furnished deck. In the wee hours of the morning, I was out working on my Sudoku puzzle at the deck table, then moved to the cushioned chairs further down the deck or near the fire pit to thumb through magazines from the owner's bookshelf (also stuffed with creative games, books for all ages, and DVDs). Not normally a morning person, I was up bright and early each day, excited to see what the day would bring. Took the canoe out 3x/day to explore the lake and little islands. Saw another couple on kayaks, a couple kids swimming happily with their dog and a goose couple with seven sweet goslings! Since it was early June, a couple evenings got chilly outside, but the heater with individual controls in each room (even the bathroom!!) kept the house perfectly cozy. The owner has really thought of everything. As others mentioned, you only need to bring food & clothes. I brought my towel and pillow but ended up not using them since the ones in the house were nicer. The life jackets were fancy and new-looking too, in a variety of sizes. Perfect cottage for a single, couple, or small family.
This little cottage is our idea of a perfect place to get away from the demands of everyday life and spend day after relaxing day just enjoying life! We stay here for two weeks every July, and we never run out of interesting things to see and do in this beautiful and unspoiled part of Connecticut. The best picnic spot and swimming "hole" in the state is just 15 minutes up the road at Lake Mashapaug (in Bigelow Hollow State Park), with deep, crystal clear water and a rocky island to swim out to. The house is small but it has plenty of room for a couple or a family with small children to be very comfortable. The huge plus for us is the great view from the spacious back deck and from the dining room, looking out across the lake. From sunrise to sunset, the view is never exactly the same, with the lighting and the wind patterns changing from minute to minute -- better entertainment than anything on TV. There's a pair of Canada geese that we've enjoyed watching with their babies each year, sometimes right at the water's edge in the back yard. This is one of our favorite rental houses, ever, and Kathy is one of the nicest and most helpful owners we've ever had the pleasure of dealing with! We're already looking forward to coming back to "our" house again next July.
