About the property

Stunning Apartment - Fully Self Contained - Authentic French Village

Steeped in history, this magnificent 13th Century former Knights Templar manor house is situated at the highest point in the beautiful walled Medieval Provencal village of Mazan. Nestled at the foot of Mt Ventoux, surrounded by vineyards, our 800-year-old manor house offers a fully self-contained apartment taking the entire top floor.

‘Maison des Templiers’ is erected on a medieval cave, vaulted undercrofts, 20 meter water well and passageways which allowed the Knights Templars and their horses to escape unseen. Several walls are adorned with 13th Century frescos, which until recently have been discovered under layers of paint and plaster, one being that of a Knight on a Horse – the symbol of the Knights Templar. The Manor house maintains many of its original features including ancient beams, 12-foot ceilings, tiny enclave, enormous fireplaces, and stunning spiral central staircase.

On the top floor of our Manor is “Appartement Chatelain'’ a 2 bedroomed, sun filled, fully self-contained apartment. With windows on three sides and spectacular views across the rooftops of the village, surrounding vineyards and Luberon mountains beyond. Entry is via the magnificent original wide stone spiral staircase which leads into the brand-new fully appointment kitchen. Leading off the kitchen is a brand new and spacious bathroom with a 1000 cm wide shower, toilet and washbasin. The master bedroom consists of a romantic canopy iron 4-poster bed. This bedroom has views directly onto the stunning stained glass windows of the Saint Celse Church. The second bedroom offers two single beds, perfect for families travelling with children or those who wish to have a single beds. Like the lounge room, the ‘solar’ bedroom has breathtaking views across the village roofs and surrounding hills. The main lounge has an enormous vaulted ceiling with windows on three sides. A large country table perfect for enjoying home cooked meals or take away for the many restaurants the village has to offer. A beautiful comfortable couch and chairs, TV Monitor and high-speed internet are available. The views from this room look directly onto the magnificent, illuminated bell tower of the Saint Celse Church, as well as the village rooftops and Luberon Mountain ranges beyond. As in all villages in France, the church bells toll from 7.00am until 10 pm at night. Watching the enormous bell gong from the lounge room, as it has done for centuries, is magnificent. An additional large bedroom called “Saint Celse Chambre” is off the central staircase and available upon request should it be required for an additional cost.

Our guests have at their disposal, a grand library which is situated on the ground floor. A perfect place to meet at the end of the day with family and friends. The very private walled medieval courtyard leads off the library. A BBQ is provided as well as tables and chairs. Look closely at the walls, as they come complete with arrow slots! The courtyard is perfect for relaxing after a day of sightseeing in the warmer months.

About Susan Fenton

Our passion began many years ago with our first purchase of an ancient stone village house in the 1000 year old perched circulade village of Murviel-les-Beziers – Languedoc – Roussillon - South of France. Although my husband, daughter and I live in Australia, our desire to travel and live as locals in this non-touristy wine village inspired us to find old, history filled and uniquely special properties These properties have been fully restored and we now offer them as holiday accommodation. We have our Murviel-les-Beziers village house in the stunning Languedoc, 15 minutes from the Mediterranean sea, and this our latest property venture is our 800-year-old former Knights Templar house in the village of Mazan – Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur. This is our property featured here called ‘Maison des Templiers”

Susan Fenton purchased this apartment in 2012

Why Susan Fenton chose Mazan

Maison des Templiers is a house steeped in history. It has been home to a well known Cardinal Hughes du Saint-Martial back in the 13th Century - two of his brothers became Popes. The Knights Templars used and lived in this house, bringing their horses in and out of the secret tunnels, especially in times of danger. We were fascinated to find their evidence, both in the 13th Century Frescos on the walls, to an ancient Kiln and 'kitchen' which is still in tact in the main cave of the building. The house has magnificent 11 foot ceilings with original beams, staircase and fireplaces.

What makes this apartment unique

The unique benefit of this property is its stunning location. Perfect as a base with dozens of attractions no more than 30 minutes in all directions from the house. From vineyards, swimming, cycling, walking, mountain climbing, kayaking, cannoning, markets, cliff top villages, lavender fields, historical churches and monuments or simply relaxing and doing nothing at all, Mazan is a delightful medieval village that offers all amenities (restaurants, cafes and supermarket), whilst not over crowded and noisy with tourists, especially at night.

The closest lake for swimming is 5km from the village with small sandy beach

For those bicycle enthusiasts, ride to the summit of Mont Ventoux or cycle the small country roads, perfect for all levels of fitness. To appreciate the regions contrasting landscapes at a relaxing pace, the vineyards of Chateauneuf du Pape, or the Dentelles du Montirail the Comtat Plain, expanses of lavender in the Pays de Sault, the hilltop villages of the Luberon, the rivers of the Pays de sorgues, this region features a network of signposted routes for cycle tourists, over 1000 km in totally, travelling on small peaceful roads, away from the major traffic.

The authenticity of this 800 year old stone village house deserves the enthusiasm of people who understand and value tranquillity and meticulous restoration work, at the same time appreciate the history and fascination of the Knights Templars. A truly unique and pleasurable experience in the heart of Provence.

Authentic French village lifestyle

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful property restored faithfully with all the comforts of home. The views from the living area are simply breath taking. We had a fabulous stay and the local restaurants were perfect. A great base to tour the area and not too far from Avignon to utilise the train. We shopped at the local Saturday market and watched the Tour De France as it raced through the village. The weather was perfect and we cannot wait to return one day. Susan is brilliant and nothing is too much trouble. Highly Highly recommend to all.

STUNNING APARTMENT IN A GORGEOUS MANOR HOUSE

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't fault this wonderful French Medieval house! The listing description was 100% accurate regarding location, layout and facilities. Susan was exceptional helpful in supplying us with information on the workings of this amazing apartment situated on the top floor of the manor house and surrounding area. It was beautifully presented in every aspect, perfectly clean and comfortable. We loved the village and its central location to all the local attractions. Having at our disposal the ground floor library and courtyard was perfect, very private and filled with history. We spent our days touring around the area visiting perched villages, wineries, abbeys and then relaxed in our beautiful apartment at night. The village had many restaurants all within walking distance which meant we didn't have to drive to dinner. The apartment had a divine kitchen where we were able to prepare our meals when we didn't eat out. We highly recommend this wonderful property to everyone who wishes to visit Provence and base yourselves to truly enjoy the feeling of living in a real French village! - Thanks again Susan, we shall return!
