About Margie Rikert

Goethe wrote, and I wholeheartedly believe: 'Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it.

Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.'

I thoroughly enjoy meeting people, and we have developed friends all over the world. A favorite place is The Netherlands where we once lived, and I dream of returning to Australia for an extended stay. I really enjoy ocean kayaking, rock-climbing, casual biking, and hiking. I am surprised at my 'addiction' to the iPad which I have been able to incorporate into many aspects of my life... working with elderly hospice patients, cooking gourmet foods at home, or reading National Geographic by the fire at night.

We strive for a smaller impact on our world with strong tenets of sustainability in our daily lives.

Why Margie Rikert chose Portland

This is apartment is part of our home.

We live in a uniquely sited place that will soothe your spirit. Come to write, to explore, to read, to unwind.

Our home sits on the edge of Forest Park in NW Portland, which makes it feels as if you were miles and miles from no-where, and yet is 5 minutes by car from the night-life and shops of the Nob Hill area, and the city public transit system.

Forest Park is a magnificent resource for residents and visitors alike. It’s future depends on the personal stewardship gained from appreciation of it’s magic; and that can only be developed by spending time within it… Listening, watching.

Guidebooks are around around for identification of native trees, flowers, birds, and animals… and conversations about invasive species can lead to deeper insight and possible action. The bee hives are a source of conversation (and honey).

The hosts are deeply involved in the stewardship of the forest, and reducing the impacts that the house and guests will have on the ecosystem. The home has solar panels for hot water and electrical generation. It is heated by an air-source heat pump. Foods and drinks served are sourced locally, supporting small businesses. Guest service incorporates environmentally responsible products for personal use and laundry, recycling, and conscious choice. 10% of profits are tithed in support of on-going maintenance and protection of Forest Park.

What makes this apartment unique

walking, birding, just being in a beautiful restful place. We are right on the edge of Forest Park... the 5000 acre wooded park in Portland.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The apartment worked very well for me. The DSL is a bit slow... But I set up my own hotspot. Margie and David reacted quickly when there was a problem. Very comfortable living arrangements, beautiful location. Great for afterwork runs.

1200 Sq Ft Apartment in Magical Woodland Home
average rating of 5.0 based on 21 reviews

Stayed in the wilderness, 10 minutes from town.

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was fantastic. This is a wonderfully built, nicely furnished apartment on the edge of the woods, yet it is only 10 minutes to town. Please don't tell anyone about it because it will then be booked up for the entire year and I won't be able to stay here again. This is my new top spot to stay in Portland.

Magical Woodland Home

  • 5 of 5

Margie and David were excellent hosts. Margie is meticulous with details and careful to provide for her guests the best experience. David is helpful and kind. The place was clean and nicely decorated. We had everything we needed. My husband and I stayed in their apartment for twenty-one days. Being surrounding by tall green trees, birds and butterflies and listening to the late night train whistle was just the experience we wanted to have. At the same time, to be snuggling with Alexis, their sweet golden retriever made it my kind of place.

Several times, we stayed the entire day at the property just enjoying the sounds of the water and looking at the sun sparkling on the green leaves.

Even I took the time to begin a lovely relaxing activity which traveled with me to Chile: coloring books. Every time I color in my book I think about that place nestled in the woods where I would love to come back and stay forever. In my memories I bring the place to my eyes and I hear Alexis barking softly. Now, I feel I have a home in Portland where in spite of many visits I never felt before. ¡Gracias! We will be back.

Secluded, romantic nature filled property

  • 5 of 5

WOW. Margie and David were fantastic Hosts. They took care of our every need and were very kind to our children. They allowed our daughter and son, who were missing our family dog, to play fetch with Alice and it really helped them relax. In terms of the property, beautiful landscape ( I will use some ideas at our own house) and apartment. It was secluded from the other guests and very clean and well stocked. The woodworking Details that David has done was amazing to see. Thank- you very much for a wonderful stay.

Into the Woods!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had a wonderful stay in this very special place and we almost want to keep the secret all to ourselves! We felt very much at home in this roomy and very comfortable apartment in the woods. Margie and David truly made our stay in Portland a trip to remember and my only regret is that we didn't stay longer! If you enjoy a peaceful beautiful place in a lush forest I can't recommend a better place. It's quite close to town but we would recommend having your own transportation, by car we were able to visit the waterfalls, beaches and the fun town of Portland. Thank you again Margie and David!!

Awesome in every way!!

  • 5 of 5

We loved the total package...the grounds, the location, and the apartment itself. Margie and David put a lot of thought and effort into making sure everything was perfect for our experience. We were amazed at how immaculately clean the apartment was. The woods were magical and we walked to town several times..the best of both worlds. It was very private and quiet. We sat out by the fountain in the mornings to enjoy our coffee. We felt like it was our home, and we hope to come back every time we visit Portland. It was definitely a high point of our vacation. We also have to mention we loved seeing our favorite dog, Alice, every day.

Beautiful setting!

  • 5 of 5

The apartment is spotless, beautifully equipped, spacious and very comfortable. Margie and David are great hosts, and will not let you get lost on all the walking paths in the park. They even provide a map of all the trails and give you tips on walking down into town.

We didn't have a car when we were there, and didn't mind the 40 min. hike down into town, but if you have any mobility problems, it will not be possible to get around without a vehicle. We were exhausted at the end of the day in Portland, and always cabbed it back up the hill in the evening. It would have been very difficult to climb that hill on bikes, as we had originally planned, but probably not impossible. It's very dark , though, and might be hard to navigate after the sun sets.

If you love nature you cannot help but love this property. Highly recommend it to everyone!

Owner's Response: Yes, a car makes life a little easier when staying here. But walking into town for a coffee and "Uber"ing back sounds like a great solution! Many "cool" neighborhoods of Portland are not easily accessible from the public transit system, so a car can be a great help. BUT that said, think of all the exercise one gets through walking! We have had long distance bike travelers stay several times. Again, once here, they tend to use the taxi system to get to dinner and back after dark. If you're looking for a "non-city" Portland location, yet close to the center for all it has to offer.. Come. Stay. Here.
