We live in a uniquely sited place that will soothe your spirit. Come to write, to explore, to read, to unwind.

Our home sits on the edge of Forest Park in NW Portland, which makes it feels as if you were miles and miles from no-where, and yet is 5 minutes by car from the night-life and shops of the Nob Hill area, and the city public transit system.

The apartment.... Walk into the great-room. It has an office working area and dining area at one end and a living-room area with gas fireplace and HD TV at the other. The couch converts to a second queen bed at night, if needed.

About Margie Rikert

Goethe wrote, and I wholeheartedly believe: 'Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it.

Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.'

I thoroughly enjoy meeting people, and we have developed friends all over the world. A favorite place is The Netherlands where we once lived, and I dream of returning to Australia for an extended stay. I really enjoy ocean kayaking, rock-climbing, casual biking, and hiking. I am surprised at my 'addiction' to the iPad which I have been able to incorporate into many aspects of my life... working with elderly hospice patients, cooking gourmet foods at home, or reading National Geographic by the fire at night.

We strive for a smaller impact on our world with strong tenets of sustainability in our daily lives.

Margie Rikert purchased this apartment in 2004

Why Margie Rikert chose Portland

This is apartment is part of our home.

Forest Park is a magnificent resource for residents and visitors alike. It’s future depends on the personal stewardship gained from appreciation of it’s magic; and that can only be developed by spending time within it… Listening, watching.

Guidebooks are around around for identification of native trees, flowers, birds, and animals… and conversations about invasive species can lead to deeper insight and possible action. The bee hives are a source of conversation (and honey).

The hosts are deeply involved in the stewardship of the forest, and reducing the impacts that the house and guests will have on the ecosystem. The home has solar panels for hot water and electrical generation. It is heated by an air-source heat pump. Foods and drinks served are sourced locally, supporting small businesses. Guest service incorporates environmentally responsible products for personal use and laundry, recycling, and conscious choice. 10% of profits are tithed in support of on-going maintenance and protection of Forest Park.

What makes this apartment unique

walking, birding, just being in a beautiful restful place. We are right on the edge of Forest Park... the 5000 acre wooded park in Portland.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The apartment worked very well for me. The DSL is a bit slow... But I set up my own hotspot. Margie and David reacted quickly when there was a problem. Very comfortable living arrangements, beautiful location. Great for afterwork runs.

Wonderful, a great place to unwind and slowdown. Beautiful place and beautiful hosts.

  • 5 of 5

I had chosen this place on the photos and the reviews. I ditto everything everyone has said. It is a beautiful place, perfect for a get away week or weekend. Margie and David are wonderful hosts, along with Alice their Retriever. in the morning or early evening, it was awesome to sit outside and just take in the beauty. The apartment has everything you need to cook, relax and the bed was perfect as well. I came for a conference for a week, and I am planing to come with my husband for our anniversary later this year. Highly recommend it.

Wonderful oasis in the middle of the city!

Owner's Response: While we not exactly in the "middle of the city" we are in a wooded oasis, just minutes from the bustle of downtown NW PDX - think Salt and Straw, Bamboo, boutique shopping, etc. 5 minutes by car! ...or 45 minutes if you want to walk to St Honore Boulangerie for morning croissants!

Thank you for your warm hospitality. We both had a wonderful time enjoying the peace and quiet of your beautiful home and gardens. The breakfast meals were above and beyond anything we could have imagined! I will be recommending you too anyone visiting the Portland area.

An Absolute Gem with Stellar Hosts!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I thought our 15-day visit to the Pacific Northwest couldn’t get any better, but as we drove up the hill for our final three-day stay, we began to realize we were in for something special. Seven minutes from Portland's Goose Hollow, in a wooded paradise we called Fern Gully, is Margie and David's fairytale B&B. Their light-filled, immaculate home is serene and lovely – polished wood, Arts and Crafts appointments, cozy fireplaces, comfy sofas and chairs, curated collections of books, and even a heated bathroom floor!

After a good night's sleep, we were treated to great coffee, tea, juice, and a delicious gourmet breakfast. There's no skimping here, only top-notch ingredients skillfully prepared and charmingly presented by our hosts.

But all this is icing on the cake; it's the Rikerts’ magical property and gardens, and the surrounding Forest Park, that take your breath away. You have to see this scenic sanctuary for yourself. If you’re looking for peace and serenity, this is the place.

Even Better Than Its Photos!

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed in this lovely apartment and were enchanted by its setting in the woods, the rocky water feature and gardens that surround it, and the obvious love that went in to its unique construction. Cozy fireplace (we were there in April), lovely bath, comfortable bed, convenient kitchen, and beautiful finishes everywhere. Margie and David, our hosts, and Alice, their dog, could not have been more welcoming. They gave us some good tips about things to see and do in Portland and beyond, and we especially enjoyed the hiking that is literally across the road from the private drive that leads to this hideaway. Convenient to the city, yet private and secluded, with panoramic woodland views. We loved it!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words! This is a magically relaxing location: so close to the hubbub of the city, but all you hear are the burbling of water and songs of birds (or perhaps the yip of a coyote!). The apartment has guide books, paper maps, local magazines to help you plan your day.

Cozy, friendly, quiet, except for all the beautiful happily singing birds! It was like heaven in the treetops! Our room was beautiful! The breakfast was so delicious and abundant, with granola parfait that tops it all off, sending us down the road fully dined! We will return!
