Wonderful "Cottage" with beautiful views

  • 4 of 5

This cottage had everything you need, from pots and pans, coffee pot, washer and dryer to hot tub and fireplace. I most liked the central location - right out of drive to Oakland and left out of drive to Deep Creek proper. Not far to get to the many places to shop, eat and explore. Also Swallow Falls is right down the road. The owner has a wonderful and informative binder on the table to answer your questions. Will definitely stay again.

The house is removed from the lake by a very busy road.

  • 3 of 5

We stayed a weekend in September. We knew that we were not on the water but we did not know that there was a very busy road which separated us from it. There is a deck which was nice to sit on but the traffic was quite loud. The kitchen was adequate but had very few pans. The freezer had good ice with much appreciated frosty mugs. The bar which separates the kitchen and dining room was nice to sit at and have a conversation with those on the other side. The beds were very good but there is no air conditioning. So if it is hot you have to use one of the many fans provided. It was fine for us but could be a problem if it were any hotter. The dock was good and was great for swimming and docking a rental if you get one. There was a gas grill, but sadly no gas. So we used the charcoal grill next to the gas which took a while but came out ok anyway. The down stairs has a pool table which is very unstable and moves if you apply any lateral pressure and there was very little room to make shots often even with the provided short cue. There are many TV's that I am sure work well but we did not try them. The best part of the cabin was the hot tub. It worked well and was clean and hot. The whole cabin is dated, not worn out, just very dated. I have stayed is several VRBO places and this is a three star place in our opinion.

First visit to Deep Creek with friends

  • 5 of 5

Our visit was everything we hoped for - lake access, relaxing and so much fun! We loved having the private dock, and although you had to cross Garrett Highway to get there, it wasn't an issue for us. We enjoyed the hot tub and fire pit, and were able to spend most of our time outside, which is what we wanted to do. The owner was very responsive to all questions we had, and was great to work with.

An original experience at Deep Creek Lake

  • 4 of 5

We have been to Deep Creek a few times, but never with a dog and so house hunting had one more requirement. Internet for those of us who while on vacation still needed to connect with work or college, enough beds for 6 adults, some kind of pool or ping pong table for rainy days, hot tub for some in the evenings, and lake front. Our Lake Front had all of those and is pet friendly.

The house is on Garret Highway, which since it had been about 5 years I didn't remember how busy it was. We had to cross Garret Highway to get to the dock. If you cross at perhaps 8 a.m you can get there safely, but at other times with my elderly mother, it would have been too precarious. I say this because while yes, you just walk down the driveway and cross the road, it is a busy, busy road with a 40 mph speed limit...18 wheelers also fly down that road.

Having said that, we did have an easy solution. We went to the state park where there is a lovely beach in one area, and nice trails for hiking with the dog in another area. They also have a nice nature discovery center for kids toddlers to probably 7th grade would enjoy it the most.

If you buy a pass for the week it is 40 dollars for a car (out of state) if you just go a day or two it is 5 dollars per person per day, so do the math to see what makes the most sense for your group.

The kitchen is a nice size, but limited with pans and bowls for cooking. Also, you might want to bring some pot holders. There is a nice fire pit outside, and a great hot tub. The internet works well, we used fans for the hotter days and those helped greatly. There are also many books you can read there.

To play pool you need to play with half a pool stick, so it doesn't hit the wall; feels weird but was quite fun actually.

When we first got there there was a horrible smell. We thought a cat had sprayed, but it was mold or mildew. The owner sent a company that brought in an industrial dehumidifier, and then more was going to be done the day we left prior to next group coming in. The large dehumidifier helped wonderfully. Kevin, the owner is very helpful and responsive.

We enjoyed our stay very much because we felt so relaxed. The beds are super comfortable. We did one day rent a Pontoon from Bills Marina, and that day got my mom to the dock

Nice location with private dock

  • 3 of 5

Best part was the dock for swimming and fishing. The hill to the dock is steep. Close to everything. Short drive to deep creek state park and swallow falls. Enjoyed hot tub and fire pit. Home did get pretty hot a few nights with no air conditioning in August. If you like to cook I'd suggest bringing your own supplies, what was there was minimal. Nice being able to bring our dog, she enjoyed the yard and swimming off the dock. Overall had a great time but the home itself is older and would be so much nicer with just a little extra care.

Notes:
The private dock is located about 100 yards in front of the house. You must walk down the driveway and cross a road to access the dock area. There is a grassy area in front of our dock which is great for swimming, fishing, picnicking, and walking your dog. The shoreline is rocky and most people/dogs should have no problem entering and exiting the lake. The depth at the end of the dock is over 10 feet. There is a ladder to climb back up on the dock, or just wade to the rocky/grassy shoreline. I would recommend life/vests or swim/arms or other flotation devices for the kids.
