Cozy living room with wood stove. Relax in the living room surrounded by warm pine paneling with cedar trim. During spring, fall and winter, we supply local seasoned hand split hardwood, kindling, newspaper and fire lighter. No indoor fires during the hot summer months.

Fully equipped kitchen. Prepare your family meals in our well stocked kitchen. We include flatware and china, wine glasses, coffee maker and filters.

Deck. The deck overlooking the woods has a gas grill and table and chairs for dining and lounging. Have your meals on the sun-dappled deck (weather permitting). We do not have a hot tub.

Outdoor fire ring. In the evening, start a fire in the fire pit by the barn and roast marshmallows. Star gaze from the big field next to the cabin, where the Milky Way shines across the sky.

Immerse yourself in nature. Your children will be intrigued to stay in a cabin surrounded by woods. Stroll over to the log barn where you enjoy a spectacular view of the Appalachian foothills in the distance. Walk up our woodland path to the cave. Bring a flashlight to explore the cave and clean clothes - you'll get muddy!!

About Adams County:

Adams County is one of the most beautifully scenic counties in Ohio. The Great Serpent Mound is the largest effigy mound in the country. The Amish community offers shops and tidy well kept farms. The southern boundary is the Ohio River, with gorgeous views, fishing and boating. Nature Conservancy’s Edge of Appalachia Preserve and numerous state natural areas showcase the county’s unique features.

Suggested activities:

Visit the Great Serpent Mound and its visitor center. Check out the Wheat Ridge Amish community shops and well kept farms. Travel the Quilt Barn Trail and see the rural countryside by car. Follow the ride of Confederate John Hunt Morgan and his Raiders through Adams County in 1863.

In neighboring Brown County, visit the boyhood home of US Grant in Georgetown; see where Liza reportedly crossed the Ohio River on the ice in Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Visit the Rankin House above the Ripley bluff, where lanterns hung to guide slaves escaping across the river from Kentucky.

Hike in one of the many nature preserves and natural areas in Adams County. Our favorites include Chaparral Prairie (a remnant prairie a mile away). Buzzards Roost Trail (a moderately strenuous hike in the Edge of Appalachia Preserve) and Davis Memorial Nature Preserve (features a pristine stream, high rock cliffs and a geologic fault in the cliff face).

Enjoy birding on our farm or in the nature preserves.

Fish our pond (catch and release only), the ponds in Tranquility Natural Area, Adams Lake State Park, Ohio Brush Creek or the Ohio River.

Have dinner at White Star family restaurant or Moyers Restaurant and Winery. Moyers offers family food in a dining room overlooking the Ohio River.

About Patty Carr

Although we lost him in 2017, George was a retired lawyer turned first carpenter then innkeeper. We bought the Round House in 2003 when it was framed in and roofed, but had no exterior or interior finish. He finished the house with expert help with the electricity, plumbing and drywall. He was an amateur naturalist and enjoy botanizing and bird watching. We have been coming to Adams County since the 1970's and have always enjoyed its natural beauty and unusual natural features. Dogs are welcome at all our cabins.

Patty Carr purchased this cabin in 2003

Why Patty Carr chose Ohio

We've owned a farm in Adams County for 20 years. This property, which adjoins our original farm, came on the market in 2002, and we bought it in early 2003. George spent 5 years finishing it, and started to rent it in Fall 2008. We like this location because it is rural and filled with natural beauty and wildlife. It is close to Cincinnati, where we live. He loved Adams County and spent all his time at Cave Hill. Truly the love of his life.

What makes this cabin unique

If you like peace and quiet this is the place for you. We have a number of families who spend holidays here, enjoying the cozy atmosphere and the woods, fields and cave. Our guests like to visit the Serpent Mound and spend time in the shops of the Amish community. Many come for the State Nature Preserves and the Nature Conservancy's Edge of Appalachia Preserve. In the Fall, many of our guests are deer hunters looking for one of the big bucks that have been taken out of Adams County.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Thank you for 'the lodge'. Warm, Homey, Comfortable. Fantastic details inside and out. Great place to relax, sit on the porch and deck, have a walk, wake up to sunlight everywhere and fall asleep to the flash of fireflies. Love that this has your hands on everything. It shows. We'd love to come back again."

It was a lovely home away from home. Perfect for family time.

  • 5 of 5

The home is absolutely beautiful. It was so peaceful and relaxing. Very roomy for our family. The fire pit made for great family time. The cave was fun. Definitely well stocked home. We had one minor problem with the refrigerator but Patty made sure it was taken care of instantly. We would definitely recommend Cave Hill if you are looking at getting away from the hustle and bustle of life.

Faul Family Graduation Celebration

  • 5 of 5

My brother is the first in our family to Graduate from college. Morehead state to be exact. He graduated with his bachelors degree in electrical engineering and for his accomplishments I rented this cabin for him and his choice of guests (family) 1 because it was about 10 minutes from where the original graduation party was being held in seaman Ohio and 2 because it had to be better than a hotel stay as he and I both had driven 2.5 & 3.5 hours to the location. We loved every part of our stay. We had the best sleep in a very long time in each of these bedrooms. The house had everything your own house would have. The only thing that would have been better for us was the check out time but I completely understand why it has to be so early. We were so exhausted from the graduation parties we all slept past our alarms and didn't have but an hour to get everything out and cleaned up.. we didn't succeed in cleaning the way we would have liked to have left it! Patty was so prompt every time I had a question she was on it. We were so bummed that we didn't get to take advantage of all the amentities like the cave, the firepit by the barn and the big beautiful space ! But the stay was a 10/10. We loved it there so much and I'm hoping that we can start an annual brother and sister trip to this cabin for the rest of our lives. Something's I was pleasantly suprised to see were , games and books for family and quiet time, all the kitchenware you'd ever need and more, a radio with an aux hookup, a wifi box, a washer and dryer, all the cleanup equipment, and coffee maker with all supplies. We loved it and don't forget to sign the guest book!!

Great Place to Stay!

  • 4 of 5

This is a great house in a perfect location! We were on a trip to visit the John Rankin house in Ripley as he is an ancestor of our family. We found this house and it was perfect! There was plenty of room for our family and the stay was very comfortable and quiet. The only thing that was not perfect was the coffee pot had not been cleaned, but that was quickly remedied. We did have one incident where the water shut off as we were using too much at one time. A quick call to the owners and it was quickly fixed with just a switch. Also, the cave is a short hike and was great for our young children to explore. Very nice owners and a unique and quiet property. Give this a try, it is well worth it!!

Labor of Love

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful and very thoughtfully-appointed cabin in a part of Ohio that doesn't get enough attention for its scenic beauty. While we enjoyed day trips to Miller's Bakery and the Serpent Mound and to West Union (where we ate hot dogs at The Panhandler!) and Manchester, we could have spent the long weekend in and around the Round House, playing games, walking the trails, and just enjoying the serenity and isolation.

Owner's Response: Thanks very much. We're glad you enjoyed our country retreat in Southern Ohio. We pride ourselves on keeping our home clean and welcoming, so we really appreciate your comments on the cleanliness. I'm passing your praise on to the housekeeper who cleaned it for you. She does a great job day in and day out. Of course, it helps to work in such a beautiful place surrounded by glorious woods. I had a couple of conversations with your daughter and her children, who seemed to be enjoying the country atmosphere a lot.
