I grew up in nearby Madison by Lake Erie and have always loved being at the Lake. My family and I spend a lot of time in Geneva-on-the-Lake during the summer, riding our jet ski's and hanging out with our friends at the beach.
April Lanning purchased this house in 1998
My husband and I bought this home in 1998 as a yr round rental home. We recently remodeled it and decided to turned it into a weekly rental. We like to stay in homes vs. hotels because you get so much more space and it's a lot more comfortable & fun while traveling with family and friends. GOTL didn't have a lot of great options so, we wanted to provide a nice place to stay, a place that feels like home.
We enjoy the quiet street a little bit away from the noise of the strip, yet we are able to walk to everything or ride bikes.
The Acorn Cottage is beautiful, clean and well equipped. Had an awesome time and will definitely rent this property in the future. Review posted on vacationhomerentals.com.
Our overall experience was excellent. We traveled with myself, my husband and our 3mo old little girl. My sister, her husband and their 2mo old boy and my parents all stayed too. The house was a perfect size for all of us! April answered our emails and text messages quickly and was friendly and hospitable. The house was clean and decorated perfectly for a beachy vacation. The kitchen was spacious and had a large table for our family to enjoy meals together. We took advantage of all the out door activities as well; BBQ, fire pit and the excellent hot tub! It was a great place for us!
This is our second year coming to Geneva and staying in this home. Beautiful house, very nice bedrooms and a great kitchen. This is our yearly girls weekend trip, and we had a wonderful time at this house. Can't say enough about the hot tub! Everyone loved it! The backyard is large and private with a nice campfire area. We all had a great time here! The owner, April is very nice and a pleasure to work with. Would definitely recommend to anyone who comes to the lake to stay at this house. Thanks April, for another great Geneva-on-the-Lake weekend!!
Thank you April for having such a lovely cottage close to Lake Erie. What a great house for us to be able to stay for 8 days. We loved the decor, comfortable beds, the lovely 3 bedrooms and having the great kitchen set up. The pictures we viewed were exactly like those posted. We were visiting from California for our grandson's wedding at the Spire Institute. So close to everything. We went down to Geneva on the Lake which was 10 minutes away..Wonderful places to eat, drink wine and just have fun. Played miniature golf and ate at Eddie's and had the best chili dogs ever. The area is full of wineries and great wine tasting. We really enjoyed that. Beautiful area to explore. We can hardly wait to come back and visit again. We would recommend Acorn Cottage for anyone seeking a wonderful place to stay.

Us 4 girlfriends found this place to be just right. It was well decorated, clean and had everything we could have possibly needed. Loved the hot tub!!! Used it as a base for enjoying the many wineries in the area.
close to all the fun, it is a beautiful home with all the amenities! We will surely be staying there again, should we decide to make the trip. Comfortable beds and an amazing hot tub 10/10
We had a lovely stay at Acorn Cottage. Prior to booking, the owner was extremely helpful and willing to answer any and all questions in a quick and friendly manner. The cottage was beautiful. From the outside it looks small, but the interior is spacious, well appointed, and beautifully decorated. There was a guestbook as well as a binder full of tourism ideas, winery recommendations, as well as instructions for the hot tub use and care, checkout, etc.
We went for a couples getaway very near Christmas for some cookie baking and wine touring. Luckily the weather was quite mild and we were able to enjoy all the amenities of the cottage.
A week after our departure, I received an email from the owner informing me that my group had left her home "trashed" and provided several photos of our negligence despite following all checkout instructions provided in the manual. Although we had followed all instructions for the hot tub, it had turned green and the owner stated the filter must be replaced and entire hot tub drained.
She also provided photos of stained linens and stated that she had to replace all of them. Thinking back on it, this was probably caused by going in and out of the house barefoot and carelessness of not washing feet before bedtime. As someone who works in a hotel and having this be my first vacation rental I believe I took for granted that linens are a finite resource, and perhaps there should have been more care on my part. The checkout instructions stated to leave all linens on the bed, where as the email suggested I should have washed them myself.
She also provided a photo of an item that did not belong to me, and insisted that some sort of nefarious activity was going on, even going so far as to question a white powder on the stove. (We made a TON of cookies - probably from that)
Overall the stay was wonderful - the aftermath not so much, leaving both the owner and myself both feeling upset. Needless to say we lost our deposit and that the extra insurance we purchased will come in handy. I've offered to reimburse her, but two weeks later have not heard back.
So, lessons learned:
1. This is someone's home, not a hotel - take caution and behave as if you were a house-sitter.
2. If you want to save yourself (and the owner) some stress, bring your own linens
3. No cookie baking
4. It should be cleaner than when you arrived It should be cleaner than when you arrived (which is saying a lot. the house was pristine)
We are a short walk to the Geneva-On-The-Lake 'Strip' and all it has to offer. The 'Strip' is part of an old fashioned lakefront getaway. It is a one mile long entertainment strip along the coast of Lake Erie, with establishments dating back over 60 yrs and buildings dating back to the early 1900's. There is a new 1 3/4 mile hike/bike trail along the Lake Erie shoreline, from the Lodge to the State Park. The State park has public boats slips for your PWC's or boats. We are also renting out Jet-Ski's, Kayaks & Stand Up Paddle Boards to the public. Short drive to area covered bridges, 20 nearby wineries, canoe or kayak the Grand River. One hour drive to the new Cleveland Horseshoe Casino.
