'Slow down, you're in Hopetown'! That is the mantra that awaits you as you enter the harbor. Hopetown is a lovely historic retreat, where islanders and guests mingle together at a slower pace of life.
Founded in 1785, Hopetown is clearly the most scenic settlement in the Bahamas. The harbour and its famous lighthouse, which must be toured, are stunningly beautiful. The quaint, vibrant-colored houses reflect simpler days. Motorized vehicles are restricted from town, so the streets are quiet and a pleasure to walk. There are excellent restaurants, grocery stores, liquor stores, a museum, and interesting gift shops.
A visit to this island is unlike any other perception or past trip that you've had to the Bahamas. Although their main industry is tourism, you will not experience any large destination resort high-rises, motorized traffic is limited, and the town's people make you feel like a local the minute you set foot in town!
The house is within a few minutes to either the Atlantic Ocean for surfing or boogie boarding or the Sea of Abaco, which is excellent for small children who aren’t ready for the waves!
Keywords: Enjoy a relaxing getaway in this beautiful Colonial Style house. Located at the lovely North End of Elbow Cay and surrounded by great garden with lush tropical plants, Windover offers complete seclusion for those looking to get away from it all and has great decks for relaxing or entertaining. Beaches right by the house and the quaint town of Hope Town minutes away with great shops and restaurants. Use of public dock. Also use of owner electric golf cart!
Our family love the water. Boating, fishing, kite boarding, snorkeling. We actually live here. My children go to school here. We just love it.
Sarah Allen purchased this house in 2008
We came here for a 6 week vacation and left this amazing Island buying a house! We just love it here. People friendly, great and safe for kids. Beaches beautiful. Nice restaurants on the water. Boaters paradise. Super fishing, diving and snorkeling.
So relaxing, minutes from the beach. Lovely quaint town. Great fishing, snokelling. Boaters paradise.
Windover is a wonderful house - I don't think we could have stayed in a better place
Some many amenities - starting with two 360 degree porches so you can follow the sun and the breezes, or avoid them if that is your pleasure. Owners and caretaker quite responsive with solutions and suggestions to maximize a visit.
We spent 2 weeks at this absolutely perfect home. The entire experience was picture perfect. The owner made the entire booking process so easy. The property was beautiful, gardens kept up and the gardener worked tirelessly keeping the grounds in tip top shape. Justin, the caretaker was there to meet us at the North End dock and was very helpful during our stay. The beach was so close, as was the dock. Even the neighbors were so friendly! Loved the North End and so appreciated the golf cart. We were very happy to have chosen this property. We had everything we needed to enjoy our trip to Hopetown and thank the owners for the supplies to get us started. I would highly recommend Windover for a beautiful, peaceful and well taken care of property providing the perfect vacation. It was everything and more!
Immaculate home! Our vacation was fantastic. The caretaker met us at the dock. He proceeded to answer all of our questions and helped us get settled. "Gotta love Tillie and her den!"
Really, the vacation began once we hoped off the ferry.
Ideal location-just a stroll away from Nathan's Bay. The owners are wonderful to work with! We've stayed at this property before and will return. It's simply its wonderful.
Lovely house, easy check in and out, every detail is taken care of, great location........can't say enough good about this property. Owners have thought of everything to make your stay comfortable and worry free. Includes "Tillie the Toiler" golf cart!
This is our second stay on this property and most definitely will return! It is a dream come true! It truly feels like a second home.
I promise you you'll never want to leave. This is an ideal home, location, and island. My wife and two kids, four and seven, spent 8 nights there. The island of Elbow Key is long and thin, and the house has easy walking access (like 2 minutes) to the wavy Atlantic side or the calm and flat Nathan's cove on the mainland side. Or you can rent a boat and dock at the North End dock, which is practically next to the house, too. I hear there are many adventures that await those who get a boat. There are a number of nice restaurants on the island which serve most of the same things: fish, conch, chicken, all nice and casual. Make sure you hit "On Da Beach" for a drink and a fish melt. Hit Vernon's grocery at about 4:00 when his brother comes in with the day's fresh snapper and grouper catch (but not on windy days).
Shop in Marsh Harbour before you get there.
No laundry facilities available to renters :(
The slow internet speed will make you realize it's probably best to put put your stupid phone down, anyway.
Oh, and don't book it for the week we'll be there ;)
Now where can I find some Kalick?
My family, all adults, now ages from 33 to 69, have just returned from our 10th stay on Elbow Cay. Been in a few different cottages, but the last 6-7 visits have been at Abaco Windover. We meet 2 or 3 families for a joint vacation so we have seen their cottages also. Some have a better view, but on balance and with all things considered, Abaco Windover is our clear favorite.
