About Thom Zerhusen

Susan and Thom are originally from Baltimore, Maryland but they met in Cayman. Thom was working as a dive instructor at Don Foster's Dive and Susan was visiting Cayman on a dive vacation. 'We met on a dive trip to Stingray City and the rest is well...history.'

They decided to call Cayman home and bought a dilapidated beach house in the heart of Bodden Town that they renovated and have lived in for over 20 years.

'After Hurricane Ivan destroyed most of Bodden Town and the Island we had to sart all over. We were lucky to find Castaway and decided to renovate the existing structures and make them available to visitors.' The lodge was first to be finished and became available to guest in 2011 and now the cottage is ready too. 'We have tried to make them unique and special and if you come to Castaway we hope you will find our little piece of paradise as magical as we do.'

Guestbook comments from the owner

We could not have picked a better place to stay for a week than here at Castaway Cottage. It is a perfect balance of island life! We felt welcomed from the very beginning as we were met by Thom and Susan (and the delicious rum cake!). The cottage had everything we could have ever needed, plus more. Although we did quite a bit of sightseeing around the island and visiting numerous beaches, it always felt like coming to "home" (away from home).

Thanks for all your lovely recommendations and advice during our stay. We couldn't have enjoyed ourselves anymore! Can't wait to return to your little piece of paradise!

Relaxation at its best!

  • 5 of 5

My wife & I stayed here for 6 nights and it really was our most relaxing vacation ever. Having read the many reviews I knew we would not be disappointed, but this cottage was much better than we expected. I must first say that Thom and Susan do an exceptional job at keeping this property clean and maintained, and it is very clear they genuinally care about their guests.

We really enjoyed having breakfast on the back patio, sitting in the shade of the grape bushes while eating some of Thom's rum cake, & snorkeling out the back.

There are several local food shacks nearby that offer great food for eat in or takeout. Groceries are available several miles down the road and the cottage is perfectly located with easy access to Rum Point, Georgetown, & the East End.

We were able to see several stunning sunrises and were fortunate to be here during a full moon which was amazing to watch rise and shimmer off the calm water.

We can't wait to return!

Even More Beautiful in Person

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay the last week in July. The apartment is very clean and well equipped. We enjoyed being in the middle of the island so it was a quick drive to either side. Snorkeling was the draw for us and we had many great experiences. Walking right down from the door to the water was super. Having the water hose to rinse off your feet and equipment was so nice. The parking is now covered with a shade awning which helps keep your car cool. Backing out of the drive into traffic is a bit nerve wracking, but you improve with practice. Tom's rum cake was delicious and having an ice maker made picnics easier. Very relaxing visit.

Perfectly charming cottage

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay in the Castaway Cottage. Our last visit was 4 years ago. It was just as charming and well appointed as we remembered. Thom and Susan are wonderful hosts. The cottage is miles away from the crowds of 7 mile beach and has its own private beach that is meticulously maintained by Thom. We will definitely be back again.

A Gem in Bodden Town

  • 5 of 5

My fiancee and I spent a week in the Castaway Cottage in June. Thom and Susan have done a great job detailing the cottage and making it an exceptionally comfortable home away from away. We lacked for nothing. It is quiet and private, away from the hustle and crowds, which is what we were seeking. We swam and snorkeled and kayaked right from 'our' own private beach. Beautiful ocean view with all the amazing colors. A perfect break from reality and naturally, we hated to leave.

A Great Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent five nights at the Castaway by the Sea Cottage in May 2017, and we will not consider staying anywhere else on a return trip! Thom and Susan didn't overlook anything when they set this place up for the traveler. The cottage itself has been meticulously remodeled to the highest building standards with high quality furnishings and workmanship throughout. It is extremely well insulated and very little outside noise comes through the walls. The air conditioner worked wonderfully and kept the inside very comfortable. There is everything you could possibly need in the cottage for your trip. We chose to buy groceries at the local stores and cooked most of our meals "at home". The kitchen is so well equipped, you can prepare any type of food you want or mix any type of drink. The blender came in very handy for making tropical drinks! We were warmly welcomed by Thom and Susan and enjoyed conversations with them throughout our stay. I should also mention that the cottage was absolutely spotless top to bottom.

There weren't many others on the beach during our visit, leaving our view of the water unobstructed and our privacy uncompromised. This area of the island is quiet (aside from friendly roosters!) and not overpopulated with tourists. Restaurants, grocery stores and tourist attractions are a short car ride away and tranquility abounds. We really enjoyed our stay.
