About Thom Zerhusen

Susan and Thom are originally from Baltimore, Maryland but they met in Cayman. Thom was working as a dive instructor at Don Foster's Dive and Susan was visiting Cayman on a dive vacation. 'We met on a dive trip to Stingray City and the rest is well...history.'

They decided to call Cayman home and bought a dilapidated beach house in the heart of Bodden Town that they renovated and have lived in for over 20 years.

'After Hurricane Ivan destroyed most of Bodden Town and the Island we had to sart all over. We were lucky to find Castaway and decided to renovate the existing structures and make them available to visitors.' The lodge was first to be finished and became available to guest in 2011 and now the cottage is ready too. 'We have tried to make them unique and special and if you come to Castaway we hope you will find our little piece of paradise as magical as we do.'

Guestbook comments from the owner

We could not have picked a better place to stay for a week than here at Castaway Cottage. It is a perfect balance of island life! We felt welcomed from the very beginning as we were met by Thom and Susan (and the delicious rum cake!). The cottage had everything we could have ever needed, plus more. Although we did quite a bit of sightseeing around the island and visiting numerous beaches, it always felt like coming to "home" (away from home).

Thanks for all your lovely recommendations and advice during our stay. We couldn't have enjoyed ourselves anymore! Can't wait to return to your little piece of paradise!

Perfect Private Beach

  • 5 of 5

We came to Castaway Cottage to 'get away from it all'. And we were not disappointed.. We absolutely loved having our private beach and had no desire to travel to 'touristy' areas. Stocked up on groceries and with the fully furnished kitchen we had no reason to leave. The cottage is as described, actually even better in person. Very clean with comfortable bed and pillows. Susan and Thom are wonderful hosts, respectful of privacy but nearby if you need anything. We're leaving tomorrow, rested and renewed. Highly recommend this cottage.

We will be returning!

Tom and Susan, were the most awesome host. Very accommodating and peaceful. The location of the property is centrally located to any part of the island. The snorkeling (fourty meters from the bedroom) was the best in the Caribbean. Toms rum cake is the best on the island, and Susan's art is beautiful. Can't wait to go back!

A Slice of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

I waited 7 months for this one week vacation in paradise! It was totally perfect in every way. All you need to bring are a few casual clothes and swimsuit. This was truly the most amazing and perfect spot to tour the entire island from the East to the West. Bodden Town is in the middle. Then to return home to this "so lovely" cottage. I am planning my next trip !

Little piece of paradise

My husband and I just returned from a week-long vacation on Grand Cayman, staying at Castaway Cottage. We had never been to the island, and we could not have been more pleased with our experience. Thom and Susan were the perfect hosts. Everything we needed was there. The cottage is very nicely remodeled and clean. The view of the ocean is lovely; my husband spent many an hour on the back deck. We enjoyed chatting with Thom and Susan, getting ideas for restaurants and things to do. Thom's rum cake is delicious (I want that recipe, Thom). We spent several days snorkeling the island, including right off the beach behind the house. We saw squid and 2 kinds of rays along with a variety of fish right there. Spotts Beach is a short drive away to go swim with turtles. It was definitely hard to leave after only a week. Thanks for the hospitality!! We will be back.

Home Away from Home

December 12-19, 2015

We are so glad that we found our “home away from home” here at Castaway Cottage! 2015 turned out to be a pretty tough year for the two of us, so we needed a place to decompress and recharge our “batteries”. We did a lot of exploring around the island, but enjoyed hanging out with the roosters, crabs, lizards and of course Koda and Bodhi. Thom was fun to talk with and informative about Cayman culture, history and island activities. He was also great about making sure we had everything we needed. We will miss him!

We loved snorkeling the most while we were on Grand Cayman. Spots Beach was fantastic and we had two turtle sightings! And snorkeling out behind Castaway was equally as entertaining and having our own private beach was so special...There were dozens of types of fish and we spotted a large lobster and a small ray of some kind (it was grayish colored with black and white specks).

Anyway, before this visit, we were thinking about trying other islands in the Caribbean, but now we are thinking Grand Cayman will be our favorite place to come back to. Thank you Thom and Susan!

Hidden Paradise

  • 5 of 5

The week my wife and I spent at Castaway Cottage (March 13 - 20, 2016) was nothing short of magical. We went to Grand Cayman at the height of the season when most areas of the island are crawling with tourists, but at Castaway Cottage we had our own private beach. Every morning, we would get up, and have breakfast on the deck which over looking the beach and the Caribbean. Then we would pinch ourselves to make sure we weren't dreaming.

Tom and his wife, Susan, are wonderful and attentive hosts. The cottage is very comfortable with a well-stocked kitchen and nicely appointed bathroom. It sits a short distance from the Turtle Nest Inn which provides free snorkeling gear.

The beach leading down to the water is composed of beautiful white sand which Tom keeps immaculately clean. The water line in this area of the island has a lot of coral, so you will definitely need water shoes. As you enter the water you will encounter about 100 yds of sea grass, but after you swim over it, you will find yourself in beautifully clear water with fine snorkeling in all directions. A ten minute drive west of the cottage brings you to Spotts beach where you can snorkel alongside giant sea turtles. And if you are feeling truly adventurous (and a little touristy), you can drive out to the west end of the island, catch a boat, and visit "sting ray city" where you can feed and literally hold wild manta rays. Despite their fearsome reputation, they are the gentlest creatures you will ever encounter.

If you are looking for a vacation in a beautiful and peaceful setting, away from the crowds, this is the place.
