About Thom Zerhusen

Susan and Thom are originally from Baltimore, Maryland but they met in Cayman. Thom was working as a dive instructor at Don Foster's Dive and Susan was visiting Cayman on a dive vacation. 'We met on a dive trip to Stingray City and the rest is well...history.'

They decided to call Cayman home and bought a dilapidated beach house in the heart of Bodden Town that they renovated and have lived in for over 20 years.

'After Hurricane Ivan destroyed most of Bodden Town and the Island we had to sart all over. We were lucky to find Castaway and decided to renovate the existing structures and make them available to visitors.' The lodge was first to be finished and became available to guest in 2011 and now the cottage is ready too. 'We have tried to make them unique and special and if you come to Castaway we hope you will find our little piece of paradise as magical as we do.'

Guestbook comments from the owner

We could not have picked a better place to stay for a week than here at Castaway Cottage. It is a perfect balance of island life! We felt welcomed from the very beginning as we were met by Thom and Susan (and the delicious rum cake!). The cottage had everything we could have ever needed, plus more. Although we did quite a bit of sightseeing around the island and visiting numerous beaches, it always felt like coming to "home" (away from home).

Thanks for all your lovely recommendations and advice during our stay. We couldn't have enjoyed ourselves anymore! Can't wait to return to your little piece of paradise!

Perfectly charming cottage

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay in the Castaway Cottage. Our last visit was 4 years ago. It was just as charming and well appointed as we remembered. Thom and Susan are wonderful hosts. The cottage is miles away from the crowds of 7 mile beach and has its own private beach that is meticulously maintained by Thom. We will definitely be back again.

A Gem in Bodden Town

  • 5 of 5

My fiancee and I spent a week in the Castaway Cottage in June. Thom and Susan have done a great job detailing the cottage and making it an exceptionally comfortable home away from away. We lacked for nothing. It is quiet and private, away from the hustle and crowds, which is what we were seeking. We swam and snorkeled and kayaked right from 'our' own private beach. Beautiful ocean view with all the amazing colors. A perfect break from reality and naturally, we hated to leave.

A Great Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent five nights at the Castaway by the Sea Cottage in May 2017, and we will not consider staying anywhere else on a return trip! Thom and Susan didn't overlook anything when they set this place up for the traveler. The cottage itself has been meticulously remodeled to the highest building standards with high quality furnishings and workmanship throughout. It is extremely well insulated and very little outside noise comes through the walls. The air conditioner worked wonderfully and kept the inside very comfortable. There is everything you could possibly need in the cottage for your trip. We chose to buy groceries at the local stores and cooked most of our meals "at home". The kitchen is so well equipped, you can prepare any type of food you want or mix any type of drink. The blender came in very handy for making tropical drinks! We were warmly welcomed by Thom and Susan and enjoyed conversations with them throughout our stay. I should also mention that the cottage was absolutely spotless top to bottom.

There weren't many others on the beach during our visit, leaving our view of the water unobstructed and our privacy uncompromised. This area of the island is quiet (aside from friendly roosters!) and not overpopulated with tourists. Restaurants, grocery stores and tourist attractions are a short car ride away and tranquility abounds. We really enjoyed our stay.

Beautiful place with great views.

  • 5 of 5

We loved this place, hated to leave. The owners Thom and Susan were great as well. I would recommend this place to everyone. When I return to the island I will try to get this place again.

We took nightly walks on the beach add well as snorkeled, right of the beach behind the cottage. It had beautiful views from the back deck and beach.

Great value for those wanting to relax

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed at the Castaway Cottage for 10 days in April in celebration of our 8th wedding anniversary. We were very pleased with the accommodations and would highly recommend it as long as you understand and are OK with the accurate descriptions. It is a wonderful value. However if you are wanting a bustling SMB experience, have a need for blazing internet speed via the cottage WiFi, or have an aversion to the periodic crowing of roosters, it is probably not the right place for you. (The internet speed is fine for email and light surfing, but wouldn't try to stream/upload a bunch of large files. We didn't travel that far to sit around and surf the net, so it wasn't an issue for us!) If you want to be away from the crowds, enjoy a sparsely populated beach and have good (ok, amazing) snorkeling at your doorstep, it is ideal and a great value. The cozy but more than adequate cottage is nicely furnished, it is exceptionally clean and is in excellent condition – a testimony to the care of Thom and Susan. Note that it does not have a washer/dryer or dishwasher, but for our stay that was not a big deal either. The fully equipped kitchen is nicely appointed with microwave, coffee maker and full size refrigerator (our must haves :-) A lockbox/safe was a nice bonus. It has a great deck with ocean view and a hammock, and chairs for both the deck, back yard and beach. Photos are accurate. We made some trips on multiple days into Georgetown/SMB for a sail, trip to the beach and some shopping, and the drive wasn't as bad as we were expecting. We enjoyed spending a couple of days just relaxing and hanging out at the cottage. Rankin's Jerk Pit and Czech Inn Grill were both close by and their jerk chicken was quite tasty.
