Of all the house on Hydra this one sand out from the crowd with great ease. No other has such a location.
Perched on the rocks right above the sea, with balconies facing the sunset and a beach just a few yards away, Villa Ostria must be the perfect holiday villa...
A traditional Hydra house (the church in the grounds was built by a local priest some 120 years ago) which has been passed down through the generations, villa Ostria has been lovingly restored by the present owner at great expense. The result is a comfortable, quietly luxurious beach villa that you'll never want to leave! The house has two bedrooms, a good sized living room with a sofa bed for 1 person, refitted kitchen and two bathrooms. The main attraction, and the place where you'll likely spend much of your day, is the huge terrace that curves around the front of the house, and which offers unimpeded views of the sea, the island of Dokos, and the sunset.
The villa is equipped with a television, DVD and Internet.
Getting There: There are frequent hydrofoils from Piraeus to the island (several per day).
Getting Around: Vlichos is a 25 minute walk along a coastal path from Hydra town, or you can take a taxi boat from the landing stage just below the house. Tickets cost around 2 euros per person.
There are no cars on the island, but donkeys are available to carry heavy luggage etc.
Hydra island is like no where else in Greece. Lost in time, relaxed beyond words and breathtakingly beautiful.
Situated in idyllic Vlichos, Villa Ostria has an exclusive, private feel, but it is by no means isolated. There are tiny shops and quite excellent tavernas in Vlichos.
Chic Hydra town, just a short walk away, is busier than Vlichos and has excellent boutique shopping, cafes and tavernas, and little shaded cobbled lanes to get lost in amongst the whitewashed houses.
Although there are no cars or bike on Hydra, everything is by foot or donkey, there is a watersports center on the beach at Mira Mare.
From Hydra it's easy to get to the nearby islands of Spetses and Poros, and to the Peloponnese and some of the best known archaeological sites in Greece.
Hydra is great for walking - much of the island is uninhabited and you can follow rough tracks up to the monastery at the top of the island.
There is also a diving school and several art galleries - Hydra is popular with artists and both painters and singer have made there home here. There is quite a celebrity list.
The lack of cars on the island gives it a romantic, relaxed feel, and children are safe here. Hydra is like stepping back in time and leaving all your daily worries behind you.
