I'm not a Gershwin fanatic, but I loved being An American in Paris!...and in Venice, and in Lake Havasu! Atop the list of my best-days-ever are all those I've spent traveling; either abroad or here in the States. I've visited at least one place I've never been before, every year since 1992. Some years that's been with my husband & sons, sometimes with my parents & sisters and sometimes with dear friends, but ALWAYS in search of what's out there that's different! And... you know what?...They Can't Take That Away From Me!
Shelly purchased this bungalow in 2011
'Pella' means 'City of Refuge' and vistors to The Guesthouse will find exactly that; a calming, refreshing kind of solitude, set above the bustle of the street. If it's Solice for the Soul you seek, choose from one of 25 churches inside the city limits. If it's retail therapy you need, explore the the specialty shops that line the streets. There's a lake for watersports, river bluffs for nature hiking, and Bald Eagle sightings, bikes trails to bike, jog, walk or cross-country ski, a bowling alley, swimpark, movie theater, ethnic and American eateries; ALL inside a 5 minute car ride. I'm born and raised a 'Pella-can' and Dorothy, there's no place like home!
The Guesthouse is the only lodging available on the Pella town square which puts no less than four Dutch bakeries and meat markets within smelling distance! Visitors won't fight crowds or lines anywhere unless it's the annual Pella Tulip Time festival, in which case you're still in luck because The Guesthouse's street-level veranda is prime seating for the Volks Parades and centrally located between all the poffertjes, vetbollen and pork-chop-on-a-stick stands!
We just returned to California from a two week visit to IA. We stayed in the Picadilly for a week with our daughter. We had plenty of room and all the amenities of home. We especially liked the location. Within walking distance to dine, shop, movie and the Farmers Market across the street on the square. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. This quaint and charming property will be a return destination for us. Better than a hotel and more reasonable too!
My daughter and I stayed at the Guesthouse in May for three nights while in Iowa attending my son's graduation festivities. The hotels in his college town were booked which turned out to be a good thing because we ended up in Pella. Notwithstanding the 1 hour drive to and from his college for 4 days, the drive was well worth it. Pella is a darling village with two wonderful bakeries (you must try the Dutch Letters), two butcher shops (both carry homemade beef jerky) and a number of owner run shops. There are also a number of very good restaurants that are reasonably priced. A windmill sits in the middle of the village square and when we arrived there were tulips galore. The Guesthouse is fully equipped with everything you need, including all the necessary appliances, cookware, utensils, coffee maker, blender, dishwasher, comfortable beds, immaculate rooms, quiet surroundings, reading material, and multiple levels of security. Because everything in the Guesthouse was perfect we had no need to contact Shelly, the owner. She was very helpful during the reservation process. If I ever find myself back in Iowa I would definitely stay there again. For those of you that have children attending college in Iowa, I highly recommend you stay at the Guesthouse in Pella. You will feel like you are on vacation when you return from the hectic days to this delightful village and European style Guesthouse.
My 89 year old mother, wife, daughter and son-in-law were in Pella for our Nephew's wedding. We had a great time. Listing and photos accurately reflected appearance, amenities and location. The apartment was clean and well maintained. Shelly was very helpful in answering questions. I would recommend this location. We didn't have a lot of time to explore the region, but found bicycling trails by the reservoire to be very enjoyable. Marty at the Bike shop 1 block from the guest house was extremely helpful. Apartment and bicycle rental were priced so as to bring extraordinary value. My mom was initially intimidated by the chair ride up the 25 step stair case, but was completely relaxed with it by the end of our stay. We were grateful to have that access available.
The Guest House in Pella was a wonderful experience. Great location for exploring Pella. The GH had everything you needed. Warm, cozy and very roomy. Plan on returning.
