On the south end of Block Island natural quiet prevails. Off of the main road and away from the crowds of summer sits Whitegate Cottage. Sited on the edge of a green meadow, it is built in the old Block Island style facing south.
WHITEGATE cottage has 2 stories with the bedroom upstairs and the living area / full bathroom with a stall shower downstairs. There is a spacious front deck with table, chairs and umbrella- perfect for a sunny breakfast or evening cocktails. It is private, quiet and special.
The cottage shares a property with the main house and a small (micro) vineyard (WHITEGATE VINEYARDS) but it is currently not being operated.
On the main floor there is a kitchenette with sink, refrigerator, microwave, blender, toaster, coffeemaker and all needed kitchen implements etc, but no range. There is a gas grill outside. An outdoor hot / cold shower is in the back of the house -perfect for washing off after the beach or the best morning shower possible on a sunny day.
The living / dining area on main floor is comfortable, casual and airy. Upstairs with windows on all 4 sides the breeze at night will keep you cool so we stock warm blankets.
Whitegate cottage is at the southern end of the island where the spectacular cliffs on the coastline provide unsurpassed views of the Atlantic and the island interior. You can walk to Vail Beach, Black Rock Beach and Rodmans Hollow.
Town center and Crescent Beach (the biggest and most popular beach) are about 3 miles away.
Upstairs : a ships ladder (A BIT STEEP, NOT SUITABLE FOR THE HANDICAPPED, ELDERLY OR UNACCOMPANIED SMALL CHILDREN, see photo below) leads to 3 beds (2 twin and one full) with a desk and sitting area. The couch in the sitting area is also a twin bed reconfigured as well.
There are ocean views from upstairs and at night you will hear the surf crashing on the cliffs nearby. The walls, floors and walls are all natural wood in keeping with the island look and feel. WHITEGATE is owner (hands on) operated to insure that the cottage is always perfect for your visit.
The cottage has its own back road and parking area separate from the main house. There is a front and back lawn as well as a shady garden path to enjoy. There is a flagpole on the front deck where we fly the flag...it just seems to fit this Summer cottage.....you are welcome to bring & fly your own choice of flag.
Block Island is a country setting. There is no traffic light, Starbucks or mainland chain store of any kind. There is one gas station, one bank and one food market. But there is a brilliant night sky, green island meadows, golden hay fields and the blue Atlantic surrounding your world.

We spend as much time as possible on island in the summer. We are constantly amazed by the natural beauty around us. Living on this island is so unique in that its the smallest town in the smallest state in the USA. Its a mixture of pristine beaches, scenic farmland with grazing cows and rugged cliffs formed by the raging sea.
Mike Nolan purchased this cottage in 1993
Our property was the Mitchell farm in the 19th century. Hand built stone walls surround our land. Sheep formally occupied most of the property. We have found all sorts of relics from the past around the property..bottles, buttons, pottery shards, iron tools and so on.
We had the cottage built in 1996. It was built in the island style with gable returns, hand cut fish scale shingles and wainscoting throughout. We added the full bath in 2005 along with a very sophisticated and environmentally friendly waste-water system which conforms to the very strict island codes. Walk to Vail Beach...quiet, unspoiled and a parking lot for 3 cars.
Whitegate Cottage was just wonderful! Small but with all of the amenities that one would need. The location is amazing and Mike and Wendy are such great hosts! I would definitely recommend this cottage.
Our family recently had the pleasure of staying at Whitegate Cottage. Everything about our trip was wonderful thanks in large part to the Nolans. From the beginning even when 1st inquiring about the rental, Mike could not have been a more pleasant, easy person to work with. The property the cottage is located on is beautiful with walking paths, wild blackberries everywhere and distant views of the ocean. There is a little tree house that Mike quickly repaired a board on as soon as we arrived so our daughters could play on it. There is a fantastic huge fire pit for evening smores. The Nolans also provided us with beach chairs, boogie boards and an umbrella to use while we were there which certainly helped with our packing. The cottage itself is small but comfortable. The sleeping room actually felt quite spacious for the 4 of us and the many windows provided a great breeze. Overall we could not recommend this place more. Block Island is such a fun place to spend time on and having a property like this to come home to made our trip all the better! Thank you Mike and Wendy for everything!!
I would recommend White gate to any one who loves being out among nature. The charming cottage is set on a beautiful property, great place to spend a week.
Owners Mike and Wendy were staying nearby during parts of our stay and were very helpful with anything needed for the cottage or general info on the island. As one of our favorite places to vacation, we were happy to find this secluded cottage to enjoy the beauty of block island.
A great escape from the world. Whitegate is simple, but beautifully situated. Great views from the windows and the front deck. Peaceful hours sitting in the breeze. The Nolans are very conscientious hosts who want you to enjoy the island as much as they do. This is not the place for you if you want to be in the middle of town or surrounded by luxury. But if you want beauty, quiet, and a chance to let time slow down, it's pretty close to perfect. The outdoor shower was a hit with us too.
A few things to know:
The ladder style stairs to the second sleeping floor are definitely tougher to get up and down than regular stairs. It's ok if you're in reasonable shape, but worth being aware of.
It's a nice spot for biking and walking, but town is a hike from here, with serious hills. We definitely were glad to have a car.
Whitegate Cottage is a lovely little getaway place in the quietest part of Block Island. The cottage itself has an awful lot of charm and it's located on a lovely property which has a small vineyard. There's a kitchenette combo hangout area on the first floor. A television is there if you're so inclined, we were not. The kitchenette has many appliances if you'd like to cook your own meals and a full size refrigerator. We actually cooked most of our meals when we stayed here, and nothing was lacking. The bathroom has an excellent shower with great water pressure and lots of hot water and a heated towel rack which I imagine would come in really handy in the summertime when there might be a bit of damp in the air. Mike the owner lives in a large beautiful home on the property and he leaves the door open to part of his cellar so you can use the washer and dryer and also there's a great clothes line to get that wind and sun dried fresh laundry effect. To get to the sleeping quarters you go up a ladder-like set of stairs to the second story which is one large open room with extremely comfortable beds and warm blankets, with windows on all four sides open to the lovely sea breezes. There is also a very nice deck where you can sit and see the ocean a bit off on the horizon and there are two comfortable chairs with cushions to hang out there and drink your coffee in the morning sun. I especially appreciated Mike's pets policy which allowed me to bring my small dog who loved his vacation as well. It's a short walk to an absolutely gorgeous beach where you will likely have the place to yourself. I have been here twice and definitely plan to return.
Walk to Vail Beach. Short walk to Rodman's Hollow. Great biking / hiking area.
