On the south end of Block Island natural quiet prevails. Off of the main road and away from the crowds of summer sits Whitegate Cottage. Sited on the edge of a green meadow, it is built in the old Block Island style facing south.
WHITEGATE cottage has 2 stories with the bedroom upstairs and the living area / full bathroom with a stall shower downstairs. There is a spacious front deck with table, chairs and umbrella- perfect for a sunny breakfast or evening cocktails. It is private, quiet and special.
The cottage shares a property with the main house and a small (micro) vineyard (WHITEGATE VINEYARDS) but it is currently not being operated.
On the main floor there is a kitchenette with sink, refrigerator, microwave, blender, toaster, coffeemaker and all needed kitchen implements etc, but no range. There is a gas grill outside. An outdoor hot / cold shower is in the back of the house -perfect for washing off after the beach or the best morning shower possible on a sunny day.
The living / dining area on main floor is comfortable, casual and airy. Upstairs with windows on all 4 sides the breeze at night will keep you cool so we stock warm blankets.
Whitegate cottage is at the southern end of the island where the spectacular cliffs on the coastline provide unsurpassed views of the Atlantic and the island interior. You can walk to Vail Beach, Black Rock Beach and Rodmans Hollow.
Town center and Crescent Beach (the biggest and most popular beach) are about 3 miles away.
Upstairs : a ships ladder (a bit steep not suitable for small children, handicapped or the elderly, see photo below) leads to 3 beds (2 twin and one full) with a desk and sitting area. The couch in the sitting area is also a twin bed reconfigured as well.
There are ocean views from upstairs and at night you will hear the surf crashing on the cliffs nearby. The walls, floors and walls are all natural wood in keeping with the island look and feel. WHITEGATE is owner (hands on) operated to insure that the cottage is always perfect for your visit.
The cottage has its own back road and parking area separate from the main house. There is a front and back lawn as well as a shady garden path to enjoy. There is a flagpole on the front deck where we fly the flag...it just seems to fit this Summer cottage.....you are welcome to bring & fly your own choice of flag.
Block Island is a country setting. There is no traffic light, Starbucks or mainland chain store of any kind. There is one gas station, one bank and one food market. But there is a brilliant night sky, green island meadows, golden hay fields and the blue Atlantic surrounding your world.

We rent by the week from Saturday to Saturday. If you are interested in renting, and want to bring a car, book a ferry reservation at once. But be flexible on times and even days. It's Block Island...nothing is easy but its all worth it.
We allow one dog up to 30 pounds.

We spend as much time as possible on island in the summer. We are constantly amazed by the natural beauty around us. Living on this island is so unique in that its the smallest town in the smallest state in the USA. Its a mixture of amazing beaches, scenic farmland with grazing cows and rugged cliffs formed by the raging sea.
Mike Nolan purchased this cottage in 1993
Our property was the Mitchell farm in the 19th century. Hand built stone walls surround our land. Sheep formally occupied most of the property. We have found all sorts of relics from the past around the property..bottles, buttons, pottery shards, iron tools and so on.
We had the cottage built in 1996. It was built in the island style with gable returns, hand cut fish scale shingles and wainscoting throughout. We added the full bath in 2005 along with a very sophisticated and environmentally friendly waste-water system which conforms to the very strict island codes.
Whitegate Cottage is a perfect example of why we love our VRBO vacations. Where else could you stay in a charming cottage with personal touches, get insider tips on best enjoying the destination and really feel like you are living like a local. (Oh, and be able to bring a beloved pet.) If you like chain restaurants, amusement parks and hotel amenities, this is NOT for you. But if you want to an active, natural getaway in an incredibly scenic spot, Whitegate Cottage would be ideal. We particularly liked waking up to birdsong, having coffee on the deck (always breezy!) and then setting out to explore the island by foot or bike. Vail Beach and Rodman's Hollow are near by and afford stunning views. The ship's ladder to the second floor may make this property unsuitable for some--but we found that climbing it was great exercise. The cottage also doesn't have a stove, but we successfully made pasta on the hot plate. And, at the end of the day, the outdoor shower was awesome!
What a marvelous place. Block Island itself is extraordinary, and Whitegate Cottage is a perfectly lovely spot from which to take advantage of all that the island has to offer. A quick walk to several incredible beaches, and an easy bike ride to the rest of the island - but outside of the busier 'town' - we couldn't believe our luck. The cottage is small, but easily accommodated myself, my husband and our two kids. We never felt cramped. Thoughtful touches like a towel warmer, a portable hamper in the bedroom, furniture that was both pretty and practical, and a secluded outdoor shower all added to an overall feeling of casual luxury. Mike Nolan, our host, was attentive and responsive and was quick to respond to questions. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Cottage, and would absolutely recommend this place to anyone and everyone.
The cottage is in a great location - quiet and secluded. We really enjoyed our stay. Our only recommendation is that the mattress on the full size bed be replaced, we found it very uncomfortable. Other than that we couldn't have asked for a cuter place.
My husband and I stayed at WhiteGate 4th of July week 2012. By far this is our favorite place to stay on the island. Since then we have rented several other properties and stayed at other B&Bs and none of them compare to WhiteGate. WhiteGate is well maintained, the property is spectacular. It is quiet, away from the “hustle and bustle” of town. At the time we had our car and our bikes, we found that at that location both were essential. During the day we enjoyed biking around the island and at night when we wanted to go into town the car was necessary, it’s a far walk and steep bike ride back to WhiteGate. WhiteGate is the perfect place for a couple. We hope to return to WhiteGate in the future.
We had a wonderful stay at the cottage this summer. The location was perfect. The views were great and you really felt like you got away from it all. The owners were very nice and seemed to take extra care to make sure everything was just right. The cottage looks exactly the way it does in the pictures, only better. It was our first summer here and I hope to come back for many more.
My boyfriend and I recently stayed the weekend at Whitegate Cottage on Block Island.The location was the perfect escape from downtown Providence. The cottage itself was spacious,clean, and offered ample outdoor space for our dog to play. The front porch was a great way to spend the evening enjoying the Island's spring weather and beautiful sunsets. Mike and his family were very accomodating and immediately made us feel at home. We look forward to returning to the Island and will definitely be returning to this spot.
Walk to Vail Beach. Short walk to Rodman's Hollow. Great biking / hiking area.
