We are originally from NJ but my husband's grandparents lived in Coaldale, PA which is about 20 minutes from Jim Thorpe. When we were going to retire we decided to look around this area and found this magnificent town of Jim Thorpe. We love the history, the architecture and the fact that there is so much to do in this small town. When we bought our house we decided to invest in other properties and that is how we acquired our rental property. We also liked the fact that the house is just above our home so we are not absentee landlords.
Helen Van Pelt purchased this house in 2005
You are staying right in the heart of downtown but in a quiet and secluded area. Steps away from Broadway where all the restaurants, shops and local attractions are located.
Staying at our house enables you to not have to drive anywhere. You can walk to everything in town including The Mauch Chunk Opera House, rafting, biking, hiking, restaurants and shops.
Spent a week here and it was just great. Convenient to all in town.
The house was clean and comfortable. Hosts went out of their way to make us comfortable.
Few attractions open this time of year, but picturesque scenery, quite a number of fun little shops and good places to eat. Really enjoyed the architecture and history of the town! Would love to come back during the spring or fall.
My husband and I stayed here with our 9-month-old daughter. The location was ideal! The cozy rowhouse is on the street above Broadway, which is the main street in Jim Thorpe. This meant we were easily able to walk down to all the restaurants, shops, coffee houses, and the train. It was perfectly coveinent, especially with our young child.
The home itself is an old structure, but not in a bad way. The kitchen is updated and the bathroom is elegant (the claw foot tub was to die for - although the stopper was missing, but a washcloth worked fine). The only thing missing from the bathroom is a hamper, which would be a great addition since towels are graciously provided. The furniture is in great condition and is very comfortable.
Helen is a wonderful owner and left a delightful tray of goodies upon check in. She responds quickly to emails and is very helpful. We would definitely stay here again!
We love Jim Thorpe and all it has to offer. We come every year for the great food , hiking , rafting , and biking. I fished the river this year and caught some large small mouth bass! Thank you Helen for the oppirtunity to stay at your lovely home.

We stayed in the Van Pelt house for a few days while enjoying the adventures the area has to offer. The location is absolutely ideal. We were able to walk to the shops, restaurants and curios of downtown Jim Thorpe (and to the bicycle rental spots for a nice rail trail trip). Easy drive to white water rafting and great hiking sites like Glen Onoko. There is on-street parking (which is a big deal in the downtown area).
The house is nicely appointed. It is an old, quaint place and provided a perfect home base for our Jim Thorpe adventures. No complaints whatsoever. Recommended!
The Van Pelt's House is located on a quiet back street within walking distance to the shops in Jim Thorpe and attractions such as the Mauch Chunk Opera House and Asa Packer Mansion. This very clean, tastefully decorated home has both modern amenities and antiques such as a claw foot bathtub. Our host provided us with enough groceries and a delicious homemade cranberry bread to have our breakfast at the house. My husband and I enjoyed a very comfortable extended weekend.
My boyfriend and I just stayed here this past weekend for my birthday and we had a lovely time. It's a quick distance to the heart of Jim Thorpe but also very private as opposed to a b&b. Helen greeted us with goodies and showed us around so we knew where everything was. We would absolutely stay again and I've already recommended to friends and family.
Just one side note... There are TWO sets of stairs that appear to go down to town from the street. Make sure you take the second set. The first set had a very faded "keep out" sign that we originally missed (oops!) and it takes you to a dead end.
